Inductees MEET THE 2018 Cleveland Abbott (1892-1955) Nicholas Black Elk (1863-1950) Rod Bowar Kennebec, SD Marilyn Hohm Hoyt Huron, SD Tom Loveland Sioux Falls, SD SOUTH DAKOTA AFRICAN AMERICAN FIRSTS Cleveland Leigh Cleve Abbott was a prolific award-winning athlete from Yankton, SD. He was the first black athlete at South Dakota State College, and was among the first-ever black officers while serving during WWI. Abbott directed the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at Tuskegee University from 1923 until his death in 1955. NATIVE AMERICAN EVOLUTIONIST Black Elk was born in 1863 on the Little Powder River. As a thirteen-year-old, he witnessed the Battle of Little Bighorn. After the massacre at Wounded Knee Creek, Black Elk settled into his role as a traditional holy man. In 1904, he converted to Catholicism, adopted the name Nicholas, and acted on behalf of Jesuit missionaries among his people. SOUTH DAKOTA TELECOMMUNICATIONS ENTREPRENEUR Rod has perhaps the most unique career path in South Dakota Telecommunications. He has created numerous business in central South Dakota such as PowerCom Electric, Kennebec Telephone Construction and Charley s Welding. He is the major owner of Kennebec Telephone Company, Inc. (KTCI). Rod s entrepreneurial spirit has led him to serve on numerous boards to give back to his community and the telecom industry. PUBLIC SERVICE INNOVATOR Over the years, Marilyn J. Hoyt has served her community and South Dakota to advance the quality of life for many South Dakotans. Marilyn served Huron College for nearly 20 years when the school transitioned into the private sector. She was a founding member of the Spirit of South Dakota which honors Women Leaders statewide. Marilyn has chaired multiple community projects in Huron and is currently a board member of the South Dakota Community Foundation. GEOGRAPHIC LANDSCAPE GLOBAL EXPERT As one of the nation s foremost experts on the use of satellite imagery to measure changes on the Earth s surface, Dr. Thomas Loveland s fingerprints are all over the landscape of South Dakota. Building from Loveland s knowledge base, scientists across the globe use remotely sensed data to monitor biodiversity and its impact on local economies. Anne Rieck McFarland Sioux Falls, SD Roger Musick Mitchell, SD Rod Parry Sioux Falls, SD Raymond Peterson Brookings, SD John Porter Sioux Falls, SD EMPOWERING CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES TO IMPACT SOUTH DAKOTA At a young age, Anne recognized a strong desire to help others. Since then, she has built her career from the ground up to lead LifeScape, one of the largest nonprofit organizations in Sioux Falls. Anne works collaboratively with many groups and individuals to develop staff and community leaders, while always keeping people in need in the center. COMMUNICATIONS HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CREATOR Roger Musick serves as the CEO at Innovative Systems, which designs technology solutions for businesses nationwide. His professional career began as one of the original owners of Martin & Associates, an engineering and software provider. Roger devotes his time to numerous boards, striving to make South Dakota a better place to live and work. MEDICAL EDUCATION TRAILBLAZER A native of Canistota and an alumnus of both USD and SDSU, Rodney Parry, MD has dedicated his life to improving health and medical education in South Dakota and beyond. For 36 years, culminating in his role as a medical school dean, he taught and influenced generations of physicians and medical professionals. MR. SOUTH DAKOTA PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS An invitation to sing at the 1966 Miss South Dakota Pageant led Raymond Peterson to a 50-year commitment to the Miss South Dakota and Miss America Organizations. Then in 1971, he began his 40-year tenure at South Dakota State University, garnering both state and national recognition while changing young people s lives for the better.
