THE ERIC AND AGNES DIXON SCHOLARSHIP The scholarship is funded by beneficiaries of the estate of Agnes Dixon (nee Sandstrom). A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually until the scholarship fund is exhausted. Two payments of $500.00 will be granted to the successful applicant: the first in October and the second conditional on continued registration in February. The criteria for applications are: a) the student must have been enrolled in a Black Gold school for a minimum of one year which must include Grade Twelve; b) the student must be accepted into a post-secondary program in the Province of Alberta with music a major area of study; c) the student must demonstrate a genuine commitment to music; d) the student must submit a letter of recommendation from his/her music teacher or the school principal in support of the application; e) the student s application must include an overview of his/her musical background and a short description of why he/she is pursing further musical training. Financial need may be considered as one of the factors in determining the winner of this scholarship. The selection committee will consist of the Superintendent of Schools or designate, a music teacher from the Division, and a representative from the found group of the scholarship (if requested). The scholarship will be presented at the annual award ceremony at the recipient s school. Deadline for applications: September 15 th after the completion of Grade Twelve. SCANDINAVIAN STUDIES OPTION If there is a year that the Dixon Music scholarship is not awarded, then two $500 scholarships will be awarded in the following year. Two payments of $250 will be granted to the successful applicant: the first at the end of one semester of successful study in a Scandinavian language course and the second at the end of the second semester of successful study in a Scandinavian language course. The criteria for applications are: a) The student must have been enrolled in a Black Gold school for a minimum of one year which must include Grade Twelve; b) The student must be accepted into a post-secondary program in the Province of Alberta; Page 1 29/11/2006

c) The student must demonstrate a genuine commitment to the Scandinavian heritage and preference will be given to an applicant of Scandinavian heritage; d) The student must submit a letter of recommendation from his/her language teacher or the school principal in support of the application; e) The student s application must include an overview of his/her language background and a short description of why he/she is pursing further language training. BRUCE AND MARY MARSH EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP About the Scholarship Mary Marsh of the City of Leduc established a scholarship fund in honour of the memory of her late husband, Bruce Marsh who made a significant contribution to the musical education of students in Leduc and district. The Board of Education, Black Gold Regional Division No. 18 agreed to be the administrator of the fund. The scholarship will be awarded annually to assist a graduate of Leduc Composite High School who is enrolled in the second year of a Bachelor of Education program, preferably with a major in music, at a university within the Province of Alberta. Amount to be Awarded If the successful applicant is majoring in music, an amount of $1,200 will be awarded to that individual. (If the successful applicant is enrolled in the Elementary program, proof of applied musical training and interest will be required.) If the successful applicant is majoring in an area other than music, the amount awarded will be $1,000. Only one award will be made in any one year. Eligibility To be eligible, the student must: - have graduated from Leduc Composite High School - have successfully completed the first year of a Bachelor of Education program or a college transfer program leading to a Bachelor of Education degree within the Province of Alberta and, - be currently enrolled in the second year of the Bachelor of Education program or the college transfer program leading to a Bachelor of Education degree within the Province of Alberta. Preference will be given to those students majoring in music. Financial need will also be a factor in the awarding of the scholarship. Page 3

Application Procedures A personal letter of application for this scholarship must be sent no later than September 15 th of the student s second year in the Bachelor of Education program to: The Bruce and Mary Marsh Education Scholarship Black Gold Regional Division No. 18 301 1101 5 th Street Nisku, AB T9E 7N3 The letter of application must provide personal details, a transcript of grade twelve marks, a university transcript for the first year of the Bachelor of Education program just completed and any other information that the applicant believes to be relevant. Selection Process A Selection Committee will meet prior to October 15 th of each year in which there are applications to consider. The Selection Committee will consist of at least three individuals, drawn from the following: - the Principal of Leduc Composite High School (or designate) - the Chairman of the Board of Education, Black Gold Regional Division No. 18, or the Superintendent, Black Gold Regional Division No. 18 (or designate) - the Staff Advisor to the Leduc Composite High School Student s Union The Selection Committee may decide to interview applicants or may make its selection based solely upon written letters of application. It will set such procedures and requirements as it deems necessary from time to time. The Selection Committee has the right to reject any or all applications in a particular year and need not make an award should it judge the quality of the applicants to be unacceptable. The Selection Committee will meet annually with the Board of Education to report upon its deliberations and any recommendations that it has with respect to the administration of the scholarship fund. Presentation of the Scholarship The successful applicant will be invited to attend the annual awards day ceremony at the Leduc Composite High School to receive a cheque in the amount awarded. Discontinuance of the Scholarship When, in the judgement of the Board of Education, Black Gold Regional Division No. 18, inflation has so devalued the principal amount that the scholarship award would be of little significance to a university student, the scholarship amount will be increased and the annual award continued until the principal amount of the scholarship has been depleted. The scholarship will then be discontinued. Page 4

THE GREG SYLVESTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The scholarship is funded by the estate of Gregory Garth Sylvester. A $1,000.00 scholarship will be awarded annually until the scholarship fund is exhausted. Two payments of $500.00 will be granted to the successful applicant: the first in October and the second conditional on continued registration in February. The criteria for applications are: a) the student must have been enrolled in a Black Gold school for a minimum of one year which must include Grade Twelve; b) the student must be accepted into Bishop s University or Queen s University with history as a major area of study; c) the student must submit a letter of recommendation from his/her teacher or the school principal in support of the application; d) the student s application must include an overview and a short description of why he/she is pursuing further education in history. Financial need may be considered as one of the factors in determining the winner of this scholarship. The selection committee will consist of the Superintendent of Schools or designate, and a representative from the founding group of the scholarship (if requested). The scholarship will be presented at the annual award ceremony at the recipient s school. For further information, please contact the Superintendent (or designate) of Black Gold Regional Division. Purpose: students. Leduc County believes in fostering environmental stewardship and helping Leduc County Sponsored by: Leduc County Environmental Committee Value: Two (2), $1,000 Scholarships Eligibility: To be eligible the student must be a resident of Leduc County and a Canadian citizen enrolled in a post-secondary education program. Students who are carrying a full course load will be given precedence over students who are carrying a partial course load. Selection Procedures: Selection will be based on the student s ability to provide a written submission representing that their educational training (field of study) will result in the candidate making a notable positive Environmental (stewardship) impact. Students must provide written confirmation of their enrollment and acceptance into a post-secondary education program, with an Environmental Component. The definition of an Environmental Component is a field of study that is primarily concerned with understanding human impact on nature / environment. Environment is defined as the physical, chemical and biological factors that surround an organism and shape its survival. The selection of scholarship recipients will be made by the Environmental Committee. Deadline for Application: One Scholarship deadline: May 1, per annum Second Scholarship deadline: November 1, per annum Application Procedure: A personal letter of application for this scholarship must be sent to the following address by the application date, clearly marked: Leduc County Environmental Committee Scholarship c/o Office of the Assistant County Manager Suite 101, 1101 5 Street Nisku, Alberta T9E 2X3 The personal letter of application will provide information on how their field of study will result in the student making a positive Environmental (stewardship) impact. The applicant will also include proof of acceptance and registration in a post-secondary education program, and proof of Leduc County residency. Disbursement / Notification: The successful candidate who makes submission by the May 1 deadline will receive $500 of their scholarship at the start of their fall semester and will receive the other $500 upon proof of successful completion of their fall semester. The successful candidate who makes submission by September 1 will receive $500 of their scholarship at the start of the winter semester and will receive the other $500 upon proof of successful completion of their winter semester. Posting on Leduc County s website, www.leduc-county.com will be made of the successful candidate(s) awarded the scholarship(s). Page 7

GEORGE L. SAUBAK MEMORIAL FUND SCHOLARSHIP (Scholarship presently being advertised - deadline for applications is September 1, 2007.) About the Scholarship: Katie Dringenberg in her last will and testament bequest to give Leduc County the sum of $20,000.00 for a scholarship fund for a student who attains his or her high school diploma after attending school in the west end of the County and continues further education in the field of medicine (including nursing, dentistry, pharmacy or veterinary medicine). The scholarship fund is to be known as the George L. Saubak Memorial Fund. Amount to be Awarded: The amount of the scholarship shall be determined by the interest accumulated on the scholarship donated during the preceding year. This amount may vary from year to year depending on the interest rate which the fund had been invested at. Only one award will be made in any one year. Eligibility: To be eligible, the student must: have graduated from a high school in the western portion of the County including: - Calmar High School - Thorsby High School - Warburg High School have declared a major in the field of medicine including but not limited to: - nursing - dentistry - pharmacy - veterinary medicine financial need will be considered in the awarding of the scholarship. - must not have previously received this scholarship. Application Procedure: A personal letter of application for this scholarship must be sent to the Leduc County office by September 1, 2007 addressed to the: George L. Saubak Memorial Fund Scholarship c/o Leduc County Suite 101, 1105-5th Street Nisku, Alberta T9E 2X3 The letter of application must provide personal details, a transcript of grade twelve marks, proof of registration and any other information the applicant believes to be relevant. Selection Process: Applicants shall be short listed by Council or a committee thereof with the final selection to be done by the same. Page 8

Reception of the Scholarship: The successful applicant will be invited to attend a suitable/appropriate location i.e. school awards presentation or a regular Council meeting to receive a cheque in the amount awarded. It would be desirable for a family member (Saubak or Dringenberg) to be invited to make the presentation. If not available, then presentation by a member of Council. Criteria for Review If circumstances change so that the award cannot be offered in accordance with the original terms and conditions, Council in liaison with the representatives of the donor shall initiate action to develop new terms and conditions that are mutually acceptable.
