Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice: Update on Inpatient and Outpatient Infectious Diseases Presented by the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, at the University of California, School of Medicine, this course reviews clinically relevant topics in infectious diseases which are chosen because they are of interest to the practicing clinician or because there have been significant recent advances in diagnosis or treatment. TARGET AUDIENCE The course is designed to meet the needs of a variety of clinicians, including primary care physicians, family physicians, general practitioners, hospitalists, internists, nurse practitioners, pediatricians, clinical pharmacists, and other health professionals who are involved with infectious diseases in the inpatient or outpatient settings. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the activity an attendee will be able to: Diagnose, manage, and treat common infections encountered in clinical practice such as skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, hepatitis, community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections, nosocomial infections, and infections of the central nervous systems; Recognize the manifestations and be familiar with the management of less common infections, such as endocarditis, infections in immunocompromised patients, infections associated with travel, and mycobacterial infections; Improve assessment of presentations of HIV infection and treat common HIV-related infectious diseases; Be familiar with newer vaccines and antimicrobial agents, their efficacy and appropriate usage for prevention and treatment of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections; Improve strategies to treat dermatologic manifestations of infectious diseases. ACCREDITATION The University of California, School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. UCSF designates this educational activity for a maximum of 20.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This CME activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency. For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing professional education those courses that meet the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and have been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM. Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. AAPA accepts category 1 credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA PRA Category 1 Credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME.
