2015 Activities Officer Meeting January 14, 2015 A meeting was held at the beginning of the spring semester to determine the best time each month for future officer and club meetings. Events for the rest of the semester were also discussed. The treasurer, David Lombardo agreed to look into grant and tax information. We also decided to order a chapter banner for the International Year of Light and decided which new outreach demos should be obtained. We began making plans for the chapter s annual outreach booth at the STEM festival Techfest, an International Year of Light kickoff event, a possible trip to the Ohio State University for tours of their optics research facilities, and an International Year of Light open house for UD s Electro-Optics Program. Social: International Year of Light Kickoff Party January 31, 2015 Three officers and approximately 15 students from SPIE, OSA, and SPS came together for lunch and games to celebrate the beginning of the International Year of Light 2015. Pizza, dumplings, cookies, and soft drinks were provided. Students played table tennis, Khet 2.0 (laser chess), and card games. The chapter s new outreach demos were also displayed.

Outreach: Techfest 2015 February 14-15, 2015 Each year, Sinclair Community College sponsors a weekend outreach event that allows schools and businesses in the Dayton area to demonstrate the use of science and technology within their fields of expertise. The event is geared mostly towards elementary and middle school students and their families. The University of Dayton s Electro-Optics Department and SPIE/OSA Joint Student Chapter annually hosts an exhibit table at this event. We demonstrated some uses of light in technology, including examples of polarizers and diffraction gratings as well as a display related to fiber optics. The laser game, Khet 2.0, as well as some lens and laser toolboxes were also used to provide hands-on opportunities for children to discover how to direct light with mirrors and lenses. There were approximately 80 exhibits and 2,700 attendees at the 2015 Techfest. Club Meeting February 28, 2015 Officers and advisors from the OSA/SPIE and SPS chapters met to discuss an open house for the University of Dayton s Electro-Optics Program and Physics Department. It was decided that the event would focus more on science and engineering students at the university rather than trying to give information to student in the arts and humanities. It was decided that the advisors would work on recruiting speakers and we began to look for a place in which to hold the event.

Social: Pi Day March 13, 2015 To celebrate Pi day, a lunch was hosted for all members, potential members, and faculty in the Electro-Optics Program. Pie and pizza was served at noon and math games were played. Approximately 20 people attended. The lunch was held a day early on a Friday to encourage greater participation. Outreach: International Year of Light Celebration April 10, 2015 In honor of the International Year of Light, the University of Dayton SPIE/OSA Student Chapter, SPS, Physics Department, and Electro-Optics Program hosted a celebration of light. Events were held throughout the day at different locations around campus to promote the importance of light both in research and in everyday use. The first two events were held in an electro-optics conference room. The first was the dissertation defense of a student from the Electro-Optics Program who did his research on the Applications of induced gratings in nonlinear media. The second was a seminar on quantitative phase imaging. The third was an interdisciplinary event held in the student union that consisted of four speakers who discussed the importance light in each of their own fields of electro-optics, theatre, computer programming, and astronomy. The fourth event was held in the main science building with a plenary speaker who presented of his work with sensors as a physicist for the US Army laboratories. After the plenary speaker, an open house was offered for the Electro-Optics laboratories. Snacks were served at each event and approximately 170 students were reached.

Social: Spring Hike and Picnic May 2, 2015 The UD SPIE/OSA Chapter sponsored a spring picnic for all Electro-Optics faculty, students, staff, and their families. The event was held from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm at Carriage Hill Metropark. A professor led a hike prior to the picnic, which gave students in the department a chance to become acquainted with the geographic and natural resources located near the city of Dayton. Fried chicken, brownies, and drinks were provided and students brought other dishes to share. Seven people attended the hike and picnic. Outreach: Summer Laureate Lab Tours and Presentation June 30 and July 2, 2015 Each year, the University of Dayton hosts the Summer Laureate Program, a weeklong camp for gifted grade school students. The camp includes classes in STEM topics as well as a few in law and business. The SPIE/OSA student chapter and the University

of Dayton s SPS volunteered to lead a short STEM activity during the camp. Members of both organizations gave a presentation on optics and hosted tours of the optics laboratories in the physics department. The tours and presentation were conducted twice: once for approximately 40 students between 3 rd and 5 th grades and once for 40 students between 6 th and 8 th grades. Professional Development: Student Chapter Leadership Workshop 2015 Summer 2015 Sichao Zhou, the University of Dayton s 2014-2015 SPIE student chapter vice president attended the Student Chapter Leadership Workshop at SPIE Optics + Photonics 2015. He also participated in the Student Chapter Poster Exhibit. Social: New School Year Social August 28, 2015 A party was sponsored at the beginning of the school year to welcome back old students and faculty while introducing new students to the department. Pizza, drinks, and desserts were provided at 1:00 pm. Individual and group pictures were taken. A quick overview of the chapter s annual events was given and new students were encouraged to join SPIE and OSA. Approximately 60 students attended. Club Meeting September 4, 2015 Four officers and approximately 20 students attended the first chapter meeting of the new school year. Plans were made for the annual beginning of the year picnic and possible future events were discussed such as laser tag, game nights, rock climbing, and outreach opportunities. Social: Annual Fall Picnic September 12, 2015 A picnic was also sponsored at the beginning of the fall semester for all Electrooptics faculty, students, staff and their families. This event allowed incoming students to socialize with the professors and other students. Approximately 15 people attended. Chicken and hamburgers were served shortly after noon and drinks were provided. Attendees were asked to bring sides and desserts. Social: Fall Hike October 10, 2015 A professor from the Electro-Optics program hosted a hike at Sugarcreek Metropark, which is part of a series of public parks with hiking trails kept up by the city of Dayton. It was about a 4 mile hike and approximately 12 EO students attended.

Club Meeting: Elections October 12, 2015 This meeting was scheduled to elect new officers and encourage more students to participate in the student chapter and join SPIE and OSA. Cookies and punch were provided to boost attendance. There were approximately 15 students. The president and treasurer retained their positions and new students were elected to fill the roles of secretary and vice president. Social: Game Night November 6, 2015 Eight students came to the chapter s game night. Pizza was ordered. We played Mario Smash Bros. and the card game Munchkin.

Officer Meeting November 12, 2015 This meeting was called to plan for the last few chapter events of the year. Dates were set for a laser tag outing and the annual Electro-Optics Holiday Potluck. We also solved a few problems with OSA memberships for the joint student chapter and went over the 2015 account balance in preparation for the OSA annual report that was due in mid-november. Social: Holiday Potluck December 8, 2015 A potluck dinner was held to celebrate Christmas, the New Year, and the end of the semester. Pulled chicken, pulled pork, a Chinese entrée, and drinks were provided by the student chapter. Attendees provided sides and desserts. Approximately 20 students, faculty, and family attended. Table tennis and card games were played.

Tentative 2015 Activities Annual Events: Social Pi Day Spring Picnic New School Year Kickoff Meeting Fall Picnic Holiday Social Outreach TechFest 2015 Single-time events: Social: List of Possible outings Spring and Fall 2016 Chapter members have asked for events such as laser tag, rock climbing, or game nights. Some of these activities may be held during 2016. Outreach: Electro-Optics Department Open House Fall 2016 The University of Dayton s Electro-Optics Program may hold an open house to promote the graduate program to undergraduates in physics and the College of Engineering. This event would be held in the late spring or during the fall semester before prospective students begin to apply for graduate schools. Possible activities could include speakers and lab tours. Fliers and posters should be printed and snacks will be needed for the event.
