The Origins of Father s Day The campaign to celebrate fathers in the United States did not initially receive the same enthusiasm as Mother s Day, perhaps because, as one florist explained, fathers haven t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have. And, contrary to popular belief, this special day was not established as a holiday in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards. On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by widower, William Jackson Smart (pictured), tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother s Day for male parents after hearing a church sermon honoring Mother s Day. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation s first statewide Father s Day on June 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father s Day. Today, the day honoring fathers is celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday of June and this year, Father s Day falls on June 17. In other countries especially in Europe and Latin America fathers are honored on St. Joseph s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19. Health Corner Getting a sufficient amount of quality sleep can be difficult for many, but a few changes can have a significant impact, according to the Mayo Clinic. Much of the requirement for getting a good night's rest revolves around controlling the environment in which a person is sleeping and developing routines that aid a person in transitioning from awake time to sleep time. A big part of training the body to sleep better involves having a consistent sleep schedule. Ideally, a person will go to sleep and wake up within an hour of this set schedule each day while ensuring that there is time for at least seven hours of sleep or more. For those that find it hard to stick to a bedtime, focus on waking up at the desired time even if you stay up late to help reinforce that part of the cycle first and make yourself tired for the next night. An often overlooked area for good sleep is what happens during the daytime, and one helpful change could be adding extra physical activities into the daily routine. Engaging in games, exercise or even just a good walk helps a person fall asleep faster and deeper at night but shouldn't be done too close to bedtime to avoid being overly energized. Daytime naps, while they can be beneficial, should be limited to 30 minutes and taken earlier in the day to avoid disrupting that set sleep schedule. Similarly, eating big meals or drinking a lot of alcohol right before bed can create disruptions in the sleep cycle. Finally, the environment itself can be crucial for falling and staying asleep, and this means making the room cool, dark, and quiet. After setting the thermostat to lower itself a couple of degrees shortly before bed, focus on eliminating sources of light and noise in the bedroom. This can include turning off the TV or computer screen, hanging up light-blocking shades, and using earplugs and face masks.

Houston Tuel Houston Tuel was born August 30, 1922 on a farm in the Red River area of Southern Oklahoma, on the border with Texas. His father, Leslie Frank Tuel, was an oilfield roughneck. His mother, Maudie Leah Pirtle, the daughter of a Methodist minister, raised Houston and his younger brother, Rex. In 1927, his father bought a farm in Oklahoma, growing cotton, feed grains and corn. Two years later, an oil boom in Oklahoma City led his family to move there, though the job didn t last long, and the family moved to Burkburnett, TX, a small town on the northern border, and the inspiration for the 1940 Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable movie titled Boomtown. Burkburnett became the family hometown and Houston graduated from high school there in 1939. After graduating high school, Houston took a summer job in Cameron, Louisiana, working on a shrimp dock. He had planned to attend Texas A&M to study journalism, but they unfortunately didn t offer that degree at the time. With no real plans, Houston boarded a bus to Baton Rouge, where he visited Louisiana State University. Upon being accepted to the university, he was asked by the admissions office which branch of the ROTC he wanted to join. Without any knowledge of the differences, he chose the artillery branch. This would prove a pivotal moment in his life! After graduating LSU, Houston went to Fort Knox in Kentucky to continue his training, becoming an artillery liaison pilot. At this time, he met his wonderful partner, Dottie, whom he would soon marry. Becoming a Second Lieutenant in the Army and a tank gunnery instructor, he was sent to Kansas in 1943 for six months of flying training. He was then deployed to Europe with the 95 th Division and flew 37 combat missions. During his tour there, his wife had their first son back home in Texas. After WWII ended, Houston and his family- now three sons!- were stationed in Germany for nearly three years. Returning to the States, it was time to separate from the Army, and Houston assumed that to be the end of his military career. However, in a wild turn of events, he was asked to visit the Pentagon, and with the combination of his education and flying experience, was selected to join the Air Force, and enlist in their flying school! Unbelieving of how good his luck with assignments became over the next few years, he says, I thought I d died and gone to Heaven! Houston was deployed to Korea, where he flew 125 combat missions. He was on the ground floor of flying the new fleet of jets, including the F-86 Sabre and the F-100 Super Sabre. In 1956, Houston was assigned by the Pentagon to Sacramento, where he eventually completed his military career, retiring as a Colonel. Houston s three sons and daughter are all currently living in northern California.

Building the Case for Group Fitness Classes When did exercise become something we had to do or should do, rather than something we did because we enjoyed it? When we were kids, most of our physical activity revolved around playing games with kids in the neighborhood and organized school and community sports teams. Sure, the fitness was a payoff, but the real benefit was continued motivation and the chance to bond with others in our age group. As younger adults, we found community sports leagues, and even group fitness classes at local gyms to help keep up motivated to stay fit. As we age, however, it just seems that we have fewer and fewer opportunities to participate in group fitness classes. Some of the benefits of group exercise include: A social and fun environment if we can have fun while we exercise, we re more likely to continue to do it. Our Live 2 B trainers keep participants engaged and motivated throughout the class. Safe and effectively designed workouts Live 2 B Healthy exercises are specifically designed to tackle the issues that the aging face such as loss of balance, mobility and muscle tone. When taking a Live 2 B Healthy class, you know that we will cover all the important areas for you and some you may not have even realized were important. Accountability factor When you participate in a group fitness class, there is always lively conversation in the group. You will be missed if you don t attend a class. Don t be surprised if one of your neighbors knocks on your door to check in with you if you miss a class. A workout that requires no prior knowledge or experience Many people find themselves intimidated by the complexity of the fitness equipment, especially the computerized pieces. Attending a group fitness class, led by a certified personal trainer, will ensure that you are getting the most benefit out of the time you spend in class. You will also be provided with modifications for specific limitations. u www.live2bhealthy.com u
