March 201 8 www.stcloud.org Downtown St. Cloud is in the midst of a revitalization. Efforts are underway to facilitate the growth of new businesses and to upgrade the underground infrastructure (water and sewer) and enhance the streetscape of New York Ave., from 13 th St. to 10 th St. The benefit of this first phase is to attract new business and to encourage business continuity for existing merchants. The revitalization team will provide updates on a regular basis to property and business owners. The New York Ave. Phase 1 project will take approximately 10 to 12 months. The project will also replace and upgrade the drainage and water and sewer lines to increase the capacity/size of the pipes to accommodate current and future needs. The bidding process will begin on March 13th. First project sign to be placed near City Hall

During the week of February 19th, St. Cloud Fire Rescue participated in an extensive course focusing on extricating victims from crashed cars. The course started with basic techniques, but became more complex, as the week advanced. You may not know, but there are many electronic systems on modern vehicles that can explode or energize, as firefighters cut away pieces to safely remove a victim. Accidental air bag deployment and energized electrical systems can injure firefighters. Crashed cars that shift, tumble or roll over can also injure victims and/or first responders. This course taught firefighters how to quickly, efficiently and safely access and remove trapped victims. This ensures the victim gets advanced care and transportation to the hospital in the shortest time possible. St. Cloud firefighters are once again working to make sure that citizens receive the best care possible. 2

Flood Insurance Rate Maps The St. Cloud Public Services Department is the community s primary source of information regarding Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM.) Since there is Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA) in the City of St. Cloud, it is important to know if any property falls within a SFHA and the flood insurance purchase requirements, if applicable. If you have questions regarding Flood Insurance Rate Maps or floodplain elevation certificates, call (407) 957-7344, write, or stop by the St. Cloud Public Services Department in the City Hall Building A at 1300 9 th Street,. Did You Know? All residents within the City of St. Cloud corporate limits, with property located within SFHA, are qualified for a 15% reduction in their flood insurance premiums. This is due to the City of St. Cloud s Public Services Department s pro-active efforts to assure compliance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the NFIP voluntary Community Rating System (CRS) program. The 2013 CRS audit efforts improved the City s CRS rating to a 7, which increased the reduction in flood insurance premium from 10% to 15%. Drainage System Maintenance Over time, the City has improved and maintained a storm water management system and will continue to improve and maintain the system, which will significantly reduce the road and yard flooding. Every year, the City budgets funds for inspection and maintenance of the drainage ditches, catch basins, and culverts that comprise the storm water drainage system. All facets of the drainage system are inspected and maintained as needed, to insure this system will function when heavy rains occur. If you experience localized drainage problems, please notify the City s Public Services Department at (407) 957-7344, so the problem can be corrected. 3

The St. Cloud Senior Citizen Center, Inc., known as SCSCCI, just purchased and donated a refrigerator to the Congregate Meals Program. Congregate Meals helps those who are alone, widowed, or have low income. It provides a place to socialize, grab a bite to eat, play games, go on outings and even learn from guest speakers. It helps our seniors by getting them out of the house and moving. There s even transportation available. The refrigerator came at the perfect time, as there was only one for all the clubs and groups to use. There s everything from line dancing to crafting to a community orchestra. For more information: www.scscci.org 5
