Leonard Cheshire Services (Scotland) - South Lanarkshire Housing Support Service West of Scotland Area Office 15 Marine Crescent Festival Park Glasgow G51 1HD Telephone: 0141 429 5644 Type of inspection: Unannounced Completed on: 17 May 2018 Service provided by: Leonard Cheshire Disability Service provider number: SP2003001547 Service no: CS2011301087

About the service Leonard Cheshire (Scotland) - South Lanarkshire provides a combined Care at Home and Housing Support Service to adults with learning disabilities and physical disabilities in South Lanarkshire. It is provided by The Leonard Cheshire organisation which has support services throughout Britain and its Headquarters based in London. In April 2013, this service separated from Leonard Cheshire's Glasgow services to become registered as South Lanarkshire services. The service provides support to two people living in Lanark and Carluke, 24 hours a day by a dedicated staff team. Its mission statement is "to work with disabled people throughout the world, regardless of their colour, race or creed by providing the environment necessary for each individual's physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing". What people told us - "It's a good service to work in" - "I haven't always felt this way about the service but just now its great" Self assessment Self Assessments were not required of services in this inspection year From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 5 - Very Good 5 - Very Good not assessed Quality of care and support Findings from the inspection We concluded that the service was very good in providing care and support to the people using the service. People using the service were experiencing good outcomes based on their wishes and needs from their own teams. We saw evidence of outcomes in the person's home through talking with them, seeing the care plans and the photographs of the supported people on display showing them participating in activities. Good outcomes for the two people using the service were supported by their care planning documents. We found them to be highly individualised, person centred and contained detailed information on how to support the individual. Good health outcomes were supported by good links with local and specialised health resources. The service supported the people using the service to make and attend appointments. Medication was well managed and page 2 of 6

records were complete showing that people were receiving their medication as prescribed and would gain the optimum benefit from it. Care plans were reviewed regularly and changes made to the support when needed. There was good overlap between shifts, handover meetings and recorded communication which ensured continuity between support workers on different shifts. Staff teams had been consistent for some time which also supported continuity in care. Service users finances were managed appropriately and service users were involved in decisions about expenditure. Staff practice was monitored by the team leader Regular supervision and team meetings took place to support staff in maintaining good care practice which supported the people using the service achieve good outcomes. Requirements Number of requirements: 0 Recommendations Number of recommendations: 0 Grade: 5 - very good Quality of staffing Findings from the inspection We concluded that at the time of inspection the quality of the service's staffing was very good. Staff were recruited safely through application, interview, references, PVG checks and support for registration with the Scottish, Social Services Council. These actions ensure that the service only employs people to work with supported people who are fit to do so. We noted that the service had worked hard to create dedicated support teams for the supported people. This had been achieved through the organisation implementing new recruitment protocols which devolved more responsibility to a local level and greatly speeded up the service's ability to recruit staff. This had enabled the service to efficiently replace staff and improve consistency of support by efficiently replacing staff and reducing the use of agency staff. We also noted the service's support to the people using the services in influencing and contributing to the recruitment process and the inclusion of a guardian in the interviews. This is good practice. Staff receive a good induction, which includes training, and participate in shadowing experienced workers before they are deployed on their own. This contributes to good outcomes by ensuring that new staff have the necessary knowledge and skills to support the people using the service when they begin to work with them. page 3 of 6

Staff receive regular formal supervision from the team leader as well as appraisal and informal supervision. Team meetings take place regularly and there is good overlap between shifts to ensure that communication between team members is good and the support provided consistent. There is a programme of training provided by the organisation which ensures that staff keep their knowledge and skills up to date.
