A Publication of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club Volume 22 April 2005 Issue 4 Tulip Rallye By Fred Russel This year s 24 th Annual MG Car Club Tulip Rallye might prove to be another jewel in the crown for the Alfa / UK team. Of the 9 Alfa entries last year, Team Kingstone came through with a decisive victory. They won even after stopping for a broken Alfa not that they actually helped - just stopped to laugh, point, and shoot a picture for posterity. That s the kind of team spirit we have in our Alfa family. It all turned out just fine, especially when we found out the day was also William Kingstone s birthday. There should be around 200 cars, representing a variety of marques, set to start this year s rallye. Though 9 Alfa entries was a good number last year, let s try to increase it this year. Fifteen cars would be an impressive goal! As always, this will be a gimmick rallye. Half the effort is not getting lost, while the other half is answering the goofy questions and solving puns. Starting at the Skagit Valley Mall parking lot early on the 23 rd, with clip board and directions in hand, you ll head out. Following those directions, you ll follow fun and beautiful roads through the Skagit Valley and surrounding area. We ve traveled through the towns of LaConner, Mount Vernon, Bow, Edison, and even Coupeville. We have been led through such exotic spots as Fidalgo Island, Deception Pass and Ebey s Landing. The goofy questions roll along. Here s a sample from last year What s old, but should have been cold? The MG club does a great job of this event and it s a day well spent. By Dave Emerson Thanks to Joe English for putting on a fun Alfa Party on Saturday, March 12 th. Joe opened his shop to the club, letting us all see the progress John van Rensburg and Jes Thyssen have been making on their Franken Milanos. If you don t know what I m talking about then you haven t been reading your Iniezione. (You probably aren t reading this either.) John and Joe generated so much interest from the Alfa community that when Jane asked me who was there I told her it might be easier to say who wasn t. For good reason too, as Joe got Ken McBride to open up his toy chest as well. Lots to look at, especially for fans of big American V8s. But wait, there s more downstairs Ferraris, a 30 s era Talbot, and on and on. Joe intended to run a tech session, but the crowd got scattered between his shop, Ken s playground, and the beautiful spring weather outside. Lunch happened instead of a tech session, along with lots Thanks Joe Ken and Bill too. of kibitzing among friends. After lunch I left to enjoy a bit of Giulietta drive time. Alfafredly s Rambling March sunshine brings April Flowers?? whoops, something is wrong with those words. I can t believe I had so much time with the top down in the last month. The Spider usually doesn t go out in March what a treat! I believe it is going to be a great year weather -wise to enjoy our cars. I hope, I hope! Have you noticed lately that the prices of Alfas seem to be going up finally! I just read that several Berlinas have sold for $8K+ and they weren t concours cars. The SSSSS (South Seattle Secret Sedan Society) must be happy to hear that. I guess the free Berlina days are coming to an end. Are Alfettas next? Nay, not likely. It was quite encouraging to see almost 50 people at our March general meeting to Kick Off the Potlatch. The convention team was very happy to see the support and new volunteers who stepped forward from our membership. It was also exciting to see the sponsors that stepped up as well as the $300+ in donations for the Alfa Giveaway. Speaking of the Alfa Giveaway, the car has now been secured a 1976 red Spider. Shortly the process of preparing it for the convention and its new owner will begin. There are many ways you can help us be the first convention in Alfa history to give away an Alfa. First, we are taking cash donations to help pay for the car and the repairs. Your donation will be tax deductible as you are making a donation to Children s Hospital through the The Adam and Julie Edwards Memorial Guild. You can make a donation by cash, personal check or by credit card. Please send your donation to Ron Calkins, Gordy, or me. The second way you can help is to join the fun as we dismantle 2 GTV-6 s on the weekend of April 30 th at Group 2. These cars are going to be parted out and the funds donated to the cause. The third way you can help is to contact either John Gates or me about helping with the paint prep and reassembly of the car. I can imagine that we are going to have some fun getting this car ready and kill some cold ones in the process. Please help however you can! By the way, I hope someone from our club wins this car (it will be a nice car), so be sure to buy lots of tickets when you register for the convention. In closing, I want to ask each of you to make an effort to thank the members of our board and the convention committees for all their hard work to date if and when you see them throughout the month. The amount of time that all these people have put into the convention to date is amazing. We are so lucky to have such a strong team to make our Potlatch the best convention ever. By the time you read this your club will have run two driving schools and a lapping day at Bremerton Raceways. Your competition program runs on volunteer labor: instructors, registration, tech, and turn workers. No volunteers, no competition program. Track fees pay for track rental, insurance, EMT, a tow truck, lunches, and purchase of track equipment such as radios, flags, fire extinguishers, and cones. The opportunity is to learn how to take Alfas apart by some of the best mechanics around, while helping to provide parts to people who need them, and the benefit goes to Children s Hospital. NWARC Member Profile: Ron Calkins What is your occupation? I ve worked in telecommunications over the years, mostly in the wireless industry. One of those Can You Hear Me Now? guys. What Alfas have owned? Other Italian vehicles? Over the years I have owned a total of five 116 s 4 Alfetta GTs and 1 Sport Sedan. I ve always been enamored of the hatchback styling, and Giugiaro just nailed it with this car. Currently I have a 79 Alfetta Sprint Veloce, a 67 Duetto, and a 73 GTV race car in progress. The Duetto was taken off the road for a series of upgrades years ago. The race car is the infamous Sharky and has recently gotten a rebuilt drive train. I need to get these two bookends back out on the open road and track soon! While I ve never owned any other Italian marques, I dream of some day driving a Lamborghini GT350 or GT400. Als,o having a Ducatti would be a blast! Why Alfa Romeo? Well, there s the Italian mystique and flare that naturally comes to the marque. I ve always had sports/sport- ing cars, mainly German. I wanted to try something else, something that was known for its handling and engineering, but also something that was wonderfully sculpted. Naturally this led me towards the Italian cars. And since I was a poor college student at the time, it was either Fiat, Lancia, or Alfa. Not a hard decision. When and how did you first discover Alfa Romeo? I d always read about Alfas in the car magazines but other than rare, fleeting glances of Spiders, I really don t recall seeing any until I was stationed in Europe. I saw a lot of Guilas on the road, and my company commander bought a brand new 75. I remember thinking, What a brand new car, and he s already been hit in the rear?! What was your first Alfa? When? My first Alfa was a ratmobile of a 1976 Alfetta GT ripped and tattered interior with a splendid backyard paint job. The sale came complete with box of questionable spares. I was in school at the time (about 1990), had a toddler and money was tight. The wife said we didn t have the money for any sports car nonsense. I said, Pressures of school, work, etc. are driving me crazy - either I get a sports car or have an affair... Magically a thousand dollars appeared in the family budget and my first Alfetta was purchased. How long have you been a member of the NWARC or other Alfa clubs? I initially joined the Puget Sound Alfa Romeo Owners Association in 1990 with the purchase of that first Alfetta. Back then I kept bugging Hans Quinett for Alfetta advice since he is the Alfetta guru. I joined NWARC in the late 90 s. Do you have any Alfa horror stories? Of course don t we all? I was driving my son to school in that first Alfetta when I smelled the distinct odor of gasoline while heading southbound on I-5. No sooner had I pulled off the freeway than the car s engine compartment went up in a ball of smoke and flames. I didn t have an extinguisher but my main concern at the time was fighting those blasted child seat clips and latches to pull my son out of the tight little backseat area while the rest continued on page 10 4

Thanks Joe continued from page 1 something popped as we were winding out 2 nd. Suddenly she wouldn t respond to the throttle. She kept idling as we coasted down the bridge and off in lower Wallingford by the no-tell Bridge Motel. Popped the hood, reached between her carbs and yes, she d rev when her throttle got goosed. Hmm something must not be quite connected. Well the entire Alfa community is partying at Group 2 and I have the first item of Alfa repair, a cell phone. So I call. They ask for my number in case they have problems locating me. Of course I can t remember the dang thing, but I have it written down and look it up. The manager from the no-tell comes out in the meantime and helps me push her out of the street and into his parking lot. I call Jane as well and she volunteers to come over. Good thing, because the party must be hard to pull away from. I m still alone when Jane pulls up. By then I know where the throttle linkage broke and decide to run up to Stoneway Hardware and try a bailing wire fix. I ve about got it and call Group 2 to tell them not to worry, she ll limp home. They re happy to hear from me as they tried to call back and got nothing on the line. Well that s funny, cause the dang phone was on the whole time. The Messerschmitt KR200 was the most eclectic piece of either collection. The car is owned by Bill Cotter Looks like old and new technology are teaming up on me. Jane and I head for home, but my bailing wire fix fails and we only get around the corner to the other side of the no-tell motel. Jane calls Joe while I go back to scraping some more skin off the back of my paw. Jane figures out that her dutz husband gave Joe our old cell number. (Now what s the point in learning a number if it changes all the time?) While we wait I fiddle with the phone and figure out how to make it tell its number. Joe, Dianne and John van Rensburg show up along with a bit of throttle linkage out of Dianne s Sprint. Not the exact piece I broke but it has a pair of the plastic female ends. That is what broke, so it s a simple replacement almost. Now she only needed one of these until we broke the one on the other end reinstalling the linkage. Forty-seven years of being cooked by engine heat apparently did in the little buggers. Monday I call Wes Ingram and yes, he stocks them, but now I need half a dozen two to replace the ones Joe gave me, two for spares, and two more for Joe since he doesn t have any on the shelf either. If you re still with me you now know why this piece is titled Thanks, Joe. 5

24 th Annual LaConner Tulip Daffodil Rallye Date: Saturday, April 23 rd Time: 9:30 am (Rallye Start) Place: Cascade Mall I-5 Exit 230 Each car club will have a First Place finish for 24 th Annual LaConner Tulip Daffodil Rallye. Non-club entrants can win in open class. This year s course will revisit the beautiful countryside around LaConner and Whidby Island. You and your navigator will enjoy spectacular scenery while touring; so don t leave your camera behind. This event is a gimmick rallye, where questions take the place of time/distance checkpoints, so anyone should be able to compete successfully. All you need is a sharp eye and a sense of humor. Please note -- speed is not recommended! You might want to pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at the end point while the scores are being tabulated. Our ending point is still a mystery even to us. Pacific Raceways April 17th Register Early Space Is Limited Our first event at Pacific Raceways is coming up, so please plan to join us for some (hopefully dry-weather) driving at speed! Pre-register for this event by mail, email, or phone. Cost is $165 if postmarked before April 10 and $185 from April 11 to the day of the event. Additional driver, same car: $85. NO EXCEPTIONS. Registration is limited, so pre-register early. Car Preparation: We cannot over-emphasize how important it is for you to self inspect your car prior to the event (visit our Web site, http://welcome.to/nwarc for more information). We will perform an on-site safety inspection before allowing you to drive; however, you are responsible for the mechanical condition of your car. This affects your safety and the safety of the others out on the track with you. Especially if this is your first track event of the season, we recommend you have your car inspected at your local shop before coming to Pacific Raceways. For Alfas only: If you plan on driving your Alfa, below is a list of local shops where you can make an appointment for a mechanical inspection prior to the event. Download a copy of the Tech form from our Web site and have the shop sign the Tech form. This will greatly speed your process through the day-of-event tech inspection. Helmet: Snell 90 rated or newer. Shatter-proof eye protection. (There are a limited number of helmets available for rent on a first-come first-served basis; contact the registrars to reserve one. ) 2. Open cars must have securely mounted roll bar that extends above the driver's helmet and has a diagonal cross-brace or documented DOT approved rollover protection. 3. 3-point seat belts are considered minimum. 2-point belts must be replaced by 5-point systems. 4. Non-synthetic clothing that extends to ankles, wrists and neck. Denim jeans and cotton long sleeved shirt are considered minimum. Driving suits are recommended. Non-perforated leather gloves or Nomex racing gloves are required. Novices are welcome: Instructors will be available to work with novice drivers. We highly recommend that novice drivers participate in a lapping day at Bremerton Raceway before coming out to Pacific Raceways, although we do not require it. Novice drivers must have completed our basic driving school (or its equivalent sponsored by another club) before driving at Pacific Raceways. If you are not sure if you are qualified, call Herb or Kathleen at phone numbers listed below. Make sure you re prepared: Get plenty of rest the night before, eat well, and be prepared in advance so that you re not rushed at the last moment. Budget plenty of time to get to the track. Please obey the speed limits to and from the track! Turn Workers continued from page 3 June, July, August, September, and October. That s more than Porsche, more than BMW. Looking ahead in July we host the National Convention Time Trials. We want experienced turn workers at ALL turns during the convention. That s four more turns than we usually cover. We don t want to lose any of our guests out there, so we need to build our team now. At the Time Trials we ll have NW based pre-war and special Alfas on the track at lunch. Insure your spot now as part of the Convention Turn Worker Team. What do you get out of it? You get a front row seat at a prime location. At each turn you can learn something. You get to see how good and bad drivers take both your turn and the approach to the next. You can see the line, what speed good drivers take on approach and how they set up their exit. We move people around from AM to PM so you get more than one view. You get credit towards a future track event. Work a day with us and you can drive a day at Bremerton free, including the driver s school. You can also use your credit for half off at a Pacific Raceways event. That s equivlent to the same credit as an instructor, as they re lucky to get a half-day in their own car. You get hot laps during lunch. We match you up with an instructor or other willing Group-A driver for some fun. Enough said. We ll buy your lunch. We ll fit it in some how and we buy. You might make a new friend. You ll get to know another club member better after sharing a corner. Hey, I know it s a long day but you joined this club to get to know other Alfisti. You may come away with a new friend or a tech bit about your car. It s up to you. You get experience. If you haven t done this before we ll match you up with some who has experience. That puts you in line to have a front row convention seat. You get to help your club. We have perhaps the most ambitious track program among Seattle car clubs this year. No sooner had I gotten my son to the safety of the side of the road, the car pretty well on its way to being engulfed, when I realized I had about $400 worth of textbooks sitting in the passenger seat. The books were rescued but the car was a loss. My son and I still joke about the incident. Yeah, he s pretty much scarred for life. What has been your most memorable Alfa Romeo related moment? There are many so it s hard to choose the best but here is one. I was down at Sears Point Raceway watching an endurance race with multiple classes of cars, and the best, most wonderful sounding racecar on the track was a little Alfa Jr. It was just belting the most beautiful, sonorous aria out of its side pipes a symphony of harmonious cams, chains, pistons, and ignition! And it was like the smallest little engine that could out there on the track that day but nonetheless had the best sounding engine! Anything else you would like to share about yourself? I think the main thing I ve learned about my passion for Alfas is that, while the cars are at the center of all this, it truly is the friendship and camaraderie with like-minded or should I say likepassioned people that makes all this so fun and special. 10
