A highlight of our time together was welcoming the new RAA Panama-Chapter with Drs. Yolanda Gonzalez, President and Cleopatra Allen, Secretary present to accept their charter. This is an important time for this new chapter as simultaneously they opened the first PhD Program in Nursing in Panama this year. Executive Board Member Dr. Martha V. Whetsell attended the festivities and Sr. Callista Roy sent a video of greetings and congratulations. This issue also includes the call for abstracts for the 2012 Workshops and Conference to be hosted at the Doheny Campus of Mount St. Mary s College. The College President will host a reception in the ballroom of the mansion in the heart of the campus (pictured at left) for all participants. continued on page 5
Notes from the 12th Annual RAA International Workshop and Conference Boston College June 10 & 11, 2011 The Roy Adaptation Association hosted its twelfth annual workshop and conference on the beautiful Boston College campus June 10 and 11th, 2011. Close to 50 nurse scholars, nursing students and nurse professionals came together as a diverse group of conference attendees. There were a number of International nurse scholars who traveled to Boston to deliver award posters and presentations as well as to welcome the new RAA Chapter, RAAPanama. The theme of the 2011 Conference, The Roy Adaptation Model Response to: The Future of Nursing, Leading Change, Advancing Health (IOM), attracted many quality scholarly abstract submissions and the Abstract Review Committee chose 4 exceptional award papers and 10 Poster Presentations. In addition, the conference featured a keynote address by Sr. Callista Roy, Structure of Knowledge: Basis for Creating Nursing s Future, and an endnote by Dr. Debra Hanna, Achieving Excellence, Manifesting Virtuoso Nursing. Faculty from the City University of New York Graduate Center, Martha Whetsell, Violet Malinski and Keville Frederickson presented the invited paper, Comparison of Courage from the Perspectives of Roy s Adaptation Model and Unitary Nursing Science. The Roy Adaptation Association Executive Board led two workshops at the 2011 Conference. Dr. Pam Senesac, Dr. Stacey Barone, Dr. Carolyn Padovano and Dr. Kathy Lauchner conducted New Designs for Education: How the Roy Adaptation Model can support The Future of Nursing, Leading Change, Advancing Health. Dr. Keville Fredrickson, Dr. Debra Hanna and Dr. Martha Whetsell directed PhD Content within the Structure of Knowledge: How the Roy Adaptation Model can Support The Future of Nursing, Leading Change, Advancing Health. The comfortable atmosphere of the Boston College campus, the welcoming community environment at the poster session and award ceremony reception and the prominent presence of Sr. Callista Roy were all noted positively in the 2011 conference evaluations. Planning is underway to make the 2012 Conference, planned for June 15 and 16th at Mount St. Mary s College in Los Angeles, CA another successful weekend. 2
Welcome to new International Chapter, RAA-Panama The RAA-Panama joined the Roy Adaptation Association on June 10, 2011. Pictured below is chapter president, Yolanda Gonzalez as well as chapter secretary Cleopatra Allen as Sr. Callista Roy presented the Chapter a certificate of recognition. The RAA-Panama Chapter is the fifth recognized RAA International Chapter. Individual consultations with Sr. Callista Roy were offered to conference participants as a response to our particpants needs survey. Sr. Callista Roy was able to meet with several conference particpants to give personal attention to individual research questions.these personal consultations provided a unique opportunity for RAA Members. International Conference Keynote Sr. Callista Roy, PhD, RN, FAAN traveled to Chiclayo, Peru October 26-29, 2011 to address the Fifth International Conference of Research in Nursing Science at the School of Nursing of Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo Catholic University. Sr. Callista Roy presented the keynote address, The Roy Adaptation Model: An Analysis of the Scientific and Philosophical Assumptions and Implications for Professional Practice on October 27, 2011. Sr. Callista Roy presented Adaptive Modes of Children Hospitalized in ICU on the second day of the International Conference. RAA Discussion Board Roy Adaptaion Association Executive Board members, Sr. Callista Roy PhD, RN, FAAN, Kathy Lauchner, PhD, RN, and Stacey Barone, PhD, RN hosted an online open discussion with RAA members on the theme, Education: Teaching the Roy Adaptation Model and Relating to Practice during the Week of October 17-21, 2011. Sr. Callista Roy recorded a lecture with powerpoint slides on the theme in order to stimulate the discussion. Over 30 members participated in the dialogue, topics included Group identity, Evidence Based Practice using the Roy Adaptation Model, Pain Management and Perception of Care, and Using the RAM to Mentor New Nurses. Boston College Blackboard made it possible for our International membership to participate at convenient times and allowed the group to keep in contact between the RAA Conference, which is a time of rich discussion. The next discussion board will be March 19-24, 2012. The theme for the spring discussion board will be Research: Measurement and Testing Propositions. Welcome to Chiclayo AWARDS Sr. Callista Roy was awarded The Faculty Senior Scientist Poster Exemplar Award, by the Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research and the Nursing Research Expo Committee at Massachusetts General Hospital. (May 4, 2011). Sr. Callista Roy was selected for The Sigma Mentor Award, by Sigma Theta Tau International Alpha Chi Chapter. (April 27, 2011). Sr. Callista Roy, PhD, RN, FAAN will present Restructuring Nursing Knowledge to Impact Nursing s Preferred Future at University of California Los Angeles School of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series on February 9th, 2012 The October 2011 Nursing Science Quarterly volume 24, issue 4 is a special issue honoring the work of Callista Roy. Sr. Callista Roy, PhD, RN, FAAN published two articles in the issue; Research Based on the Roy Adaptation Model: Last 25 Years and Extending the Roy Adaptation Model to Meet Changing Global Needs. RAA Fellows Marjorie C. Dobratz and Jacqueline Fawcett contributed articles as well as Executive Board Members, Keville Frederickson, Stacey Barone, Debra Hanna, and Pam Senesac. Our 2012 conference theme Practice Supported by Evidence: The Roy Adaptation Model is inclusive of the many topics you might present. In particular research papers are welcome. The Executive Board members will be ready to share parts of the review of the last 15 years of research based on the Roy Adaptation Model. We are using the research to develop middle range theories and evidence for practice. We expect to be in the middle of preparing the manuscript on this review and knowledge development strategies for Springer Publishing, New York. We thank all who participated in the RAA member dialogue using the RAA Discussion Board. Many good ideas were shared among members, particularly on new graduates entering practice blending the announced topics of teaching and practice. You can read more about this event in the RAA Review and also the announcement of dates and topic for our next dialogue in spring 2012. We look forward to having you join us again for a lively discussion. It seems this discussion is a good step toward our goal of being in contact between conferences. We will be even more eager to see you in Los Angles in June.
