Statements & Search Criteria Mission To preserve rural culture in the Central Virginia Piedmont. The CRC seeks to support local economies and agriculture, to protect rural landscapes and traditions, and conserve natural and historic resources. Background The Center for Rural Culture is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in January, 2004 by a conservationist, a couple who own a grass-fed organic beef farm, and a Virginia Cooperative Extension Agent. The group was concerned about the fast rate of shrinking farmland and was interested in finding a way to share the history, stories, art and culture of their rural community with future generations. At the same time, though, they were deeply concerned about preserving the pastoral farmland of Goochland County and the surrounding Piedmont region and keeping it in agricultural use. Since 2004, we have been working hard to provide the members of our community with quality programs that serve to sustain our rural culture. As founders of the popular Goochland Farmers' Market and as a licensee for our online Local Roots Food Co-op (through Lulu's Local Foods), we have helped to keep valuable agricultural land in use by providing a means for farmers to sell fresh, local, seasonal food and other land-based products. We serve as a conduit for handing down the history, stories, music and lifestyles related to a rich, rural culture and have helped to cultivate our local roots. We also offer classes and workshops. Impact Sharing knowledge is the key to preserving the rural fabric of our communities. The CRC sponsors local markets and presents programs, seminars, speakers, workshops and events that highlight the value and traditions of rural Virginia. Needs Our top 5 most pressing needs are:secure the CRC's future through fundraisingidentify a new home office locationexpand reach of Local RootsFood Co-opRaise awareness of need to support local food production Board Chair Statement We are a group of very committed individuals for whom the promotion of local producers and healthy food choices are important. We are continually trying to determine effective means and projects which further our mission. We have been gratified that in increasing our fundraising efforts the past two years we have identified other like-minded groups/individuals who have the same concerns. Areas Of Service Areas Served Areas Metro Richmond Ashland Chesterfield County Goochland County Hanover County Henrico County Powhatan County Charles City County Southside Virginia Although we are centered in Goochland County, VA, we serve a wide area surrounding Richmond and Central Virginia.
