We re Back Eastern Michigan Open Notes The Boilermakers return to the Eastern Michigan Open to start their season after missing the 2010 event. Purdue has opened its season with the Eagles in six of the last seven years, including five straight from 2005-09. Returning Placewinners Four members of the Boilermakers tournament roster have placed in the Eastern Michigan Open over their careers, including two-time placewinner Matt Fields and 2008 champion Jake Fleckenstein. Fields was fifth at 125 pounds in 2008 and 2009, while Fleckenstein won the 2008 open at 133 pounds en route to Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors. Sophomore Cashé Quiroga and freshman Nick Lawrence are the other two to have placed as Quiroga was fourth at 125 pounds in 2009, and Lawrence took sixth at 133 pounds, competing unattached in 2010. Let s Do It Like Last Time Purdue s last trip to the Eastern Michigan Open was a successful one as they won five weight classes and placed 10 grapplers overall in 2009. Who s Coming This Year? It s always curious to see who shows up at open tournaments on the NCAA scene, both in the sense of what teams attend and what wrestlers those teams bring with them. The EMU Open has played host in the past to NCAA Division I programs such as Purdue, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Northwestern, Edinboro, Central Michigan, Illinois, Ohio State, Cleveland State and Navy, in addition to the host Eagles. Other non-division I regulars include Lindenwood, Cumberlands, Findlay, Brockport State and Ashland. Individual standouts who have graced the tournament over the past few seasons include NCAA Champions Kellen Russell (Michigan) and Jarrod King (Edinboro) and Northwestern All-American Brandon Precin. Positional Battles After last weekend s season-opening wrestle-offs, the Boilermakers will continue to fight for starting jobs at various weight classes. Purdue is set to field multiple wrestlers in six weight classes, all with the chances of Boilermaker head-to-head battles. Chasing History Career Record Lists Single Season Record Lists Wins A.J. They All Fall Down Season Notes A.J. Kissel enters his final season of collegiate wrestling just three pins shy of the Boilermakers career record. He has 45 career falls, trailing head coach Scott Hinkel s mark of 48, set from 1984 to 1987. Kissel already has the top-two single season totals in Purdue history, posting 19 falls in 2007-08 and 17 pins in 2008-09. Kissel is scheduled to miss approximately the first month of the 2011-12 season, recovering from off-season surgery. Bumping Up Four Boilermakers are moving up a weight to start the 2010-11 season, hoping the extra pounds will make for better wrestling. Highlighting the list are Quiroga and A.J. Kissel, jumping from 125 to 133 and 184 to 197, respectively, while junior Tommy Churchard moves from 149 to 157, and sophomore Patrick Kissel climbs from 165 to 174. Welcome Back The Boilermakers welcome redshirt sophomore Cashé Quiroga back to the lineup after taking a redshirt season in 2010-11. Quiroga became just the fifth freshman in school history to earn All-American honors, and just the third true freshman, taking sixth place at 125 pounds in 2010. Quiroga set a freshman record with 124 takedowns in 2009-10, good for the sixth-highest single-season total in school history. Impact Transfer UNC Greensboro transfer student Ivan Lopouchanski decided to call Purdue his new home after the Spartans dismissed their program after the 2010-11 season, and the Boilermakers welcome him with open arms. Hailing from Florida, by way of Russia, Lopouchanski was a two-time NCAA qualifier for UNC Greensboro, reaching the Round of 12 in 2011, and setting a school record with 41 wins last season. Where Do We Call Home? Purdue likes to keep its Indiana talent close to home as 22 of the 33 wrestlers on the team hail from the Hoosier State. The other 11 wrestlers come from five states: Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, Florida, Texas and California. State Champs Fifteen members of the Boilermakers 2011-12 roster have high school state titles on their resumes, including 10 Indiana state champions. Senior Matt Fields, junior Tommy Churchard, sophomores Camden Eppert and Cashé Quiroga, redshirt freshmen Brandon Nelsen, Brock Norton and Frankie Porras and freshmen Drake Stein, Doug Welch and Chad Welch. Senior A.J. Kissel and sophomore Patrick Kissel were both state champions in Wisconsin, while freshmen Andy Hoselton and Danny Sabatello captured state titles in Illinois and junior Ivan Lopouchanski won a Florida state championship. It s A Family Affair The Boilermakers retain their family connections within the program in 2011-12 as brothers A.J. and Patrick Kissel remain on the squad, while twin brothers Doug and Chad Welch join the ranks. This marks the seventh straight season Purdue has had at least one set of brothers on the team. Boilermaker For Life Head coach Scott Hinkel has been a part of Purdue wrestling for all but three of the last 28 years, competing for the Old Gold and Black from 1984 to 1987, serving as a volunteer and graduate assistant in 1989 and 1990 and working as a full-time assistant from 1993 until he was named the 13th head coach in school history in 2007. He still holds several spots on the Boilermakers all-time record lists, including the career record for falls (45) and ranking second all-time with 127 career victories. Hinkel s also one of just two wrestlers in school history to earn All-America and Academic All-Big Ten honors in the same season.
