This new rule also impacts residents, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who manage patients in the aforementioned critical care units under the supervision of or in collaboration with the admitting/attending physician. The new rule does not apply to subspecialists who consult critical care patients. The new threshold criteria include: Successful completion of a critical care fellowship; or Current board certification or eligibility in one of the following specialties or subspecialties by the American Board of Medical Specialties, or the American Osteopathic Association: cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, critical care medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, neurosurgery, or vascular surgery; or Successful completion of the course entitled Fundamentals in Critical Care Support (FCCS) or equivalent training as determined by the Adult ICU Medical Director(s).
