PMINZ Awards 2018 Information Pack The Project Management Institute New Zealand Chapter (PMINZ) has established a number of awards to recognise and honour achievements in the field of project management and also to recognise contributions to the Institute. 2018 marks the 10 th year of these awards. Award Categories A single award may be issued for each of the seven PMINZ Awards within this prestigious programme: Project of the Year sponsored by Psoda Public Sector Project of the Year sponsored by Tregaskis Brown PMO of the Year sponsored by Project Plus Project Manager of the Year Emerging Project Manager of the Year sponsored by Auckland University Research Achievement Award Volunteer of the Year sponsored by Quest (Please note: Not all awards require PMI affiliation or PMINZ membership) 2. Categories and Entry Criteria Psoda Project of the Year 2018 Purpose The Psoda Project of the Year Award recognises the success of a project and the project team, for the superior performance and execution of exceptional project management. Eligibility Projects from throughout New Zealand are eligible for application, regardless of size, industry type or location PMINZ affiliation is encouraged but is not a prerequisite to enter this award The nominated project must have been completed within 12 months of the application date. i.e. the project needs to have been completed sometime between April 2017 and May 2018 The winner of the Project of the Year award in 2017 is not eligible to enter the award in 2018. Criteria The project met the client s needs as evidenced by a letter from the client (or sponsor) and / or the project closure report The project met or improved on budget and schedule performance when compared with original established budget and schedule goals The project demonstrated originality and uniqueness of applied project management techniques (i.e. tools), including innovative application of practices or methods The project exhibited technical aspects and advancement of the project management profession through effective application of the ten PMBOK Knowledge Areas The project demonstrated complexity and unusual conditions, issues, or barriers requiring special management team action and performance. Tregaskis Brown Public Sector Project of the Year 2018 Purpose The Tregaskis Brown Public Sector Project of the Year recognises both the success of a project and the project team, for the superior performance and execution of exceptional project management in the Public Sector. Eligibility Projects from throughout New Zealand are eligible for application, regardless of size, industry type or location Project was completed by a Public Sector Agency or, with their written agreement, for a Public Sector Agency PMINZ affiliation is encouraged but is not a prerequisite to enter this award The winner of the Public Sector Project of the Year 2017 is not eligible to enter in 2018. The nominated project must have been completed within 12 months of the application date. i.e. the project needs to have been completed sometime between April 2017 and May 2018, depending on the date of application. Project Plus PMO of the Year Award 2018 Purpose The purpose of this award is to recognise a Project, Programme or Portfolio Management Office (PMO) that has increased the success of their company s (or other entity s) projects / programmes. Eligibility The PMO must be based in New Zealand The nominee must have, through the implementation or running of a PMO, increased the quality and success of the company s projects and/or programmes PMINZ affiliation is not necessary The PMO may be enterprise wide, Information Services or other variant The nomination should be prepared by PMO members and not third party consulting, training or other organisations All corporate and government PMOs are eligible for nomination More than one PMO from an organisation can participate as the award is to the PMO, not the organisation The winner from 2017, is ineligible to enter the 2018 award. Criteria The PMO must demonstrate increased performance of projects and/or programmes within the organisation The PMO must demonstrate good understanding and application of PMO practices The PMO must demonstrate how projects and programmes have contributed to business success The PMO must demonstrate good engagement with senior management, through a letter from the Chief Executive or Tier 2, supporting the nomination. PMINZ Project Manager of the Year Award 2018 Purpose The purpose of this award is to recognise a project manager for a significant achievement or sustained performance, in the project management of a project or multiple projects where PMBOK principles have been applied and demonstrated. The nominee must be a PMI member in good standing or nominated by a PMI member The nominee may work in any field, such as business, government, academics, consulting, training, etc. The nominee may also have an entry in another award category Self-nomination is not permitted The Winner from 2017, is ineligible to enter the 2018 award. Criteria The achievement/performance was significant in nature The achievement demonstrated an understanding of PMI published standards and practices The achievement demonstrated leadership and initiative. 3
Auckland University Emerging Project Manager of the Year Award 2018 Purpose The Auckland University Emerging Project Manager of the Year recognises rising talent those individuals who, despite being in the early stages of their project management careers, are already demonstrating that they can make a difference to the project management profession and the companies, organisations and clients for whom they work. The nominee must be a PMINZ member in good standing or nominated by a PMINZ member The nominee may work in any field, such as business, government, academia, consulting, training, etc. Self-nomination is not permitted The Emerging Project Manager of the Year award is open to project managers with up to five years experience who are working on any project where their involvement has been greater than six months The Winner from 2017, is ineligible to enter the 2018 award. Criteria The achievement/performance was significant in nature The achievement demonstrated an understanding of PMI published standards and practices The achievement demonstrated leadership. PMINZ Research Achievement of the Year Award 2018 Purpose The purpose of this award is to recognise an individual who has advanced the concepts, knowledge, and/or practices of project management through professionally conducted and authored project management research. The nominee must have, through project management research, made a contribution to the advancement of the field of project management The nominee does not have to be a member of PMINZ More than one person can be nominated if the research/paper was jointly completed The nominee may work in any field, such as business, government, non-profit, academia consulting, training etc. The research must have been completed within 12 months from the date of the application i.e. the research needs to have been completed sometime between March 2017 and May 2018, depending on the date of application The winner of the 2017 Research Achievement of the year award is not eligible to enter in 2018. Criteria The nominee must have carried out research that has contributed to the advancement of the field of project management, and is consistent with the definition adopted by the PMI Research Program Project management research involves scholarly or scientific investigations and is based upon data from which general conclusions can be drawn. Both the data and the conclusions are focused on either the project management context or the management activities needed to complete a project successfully, but not on the technical activities of a project Research can include both theory and practice in the field of project / program management, which may include: - Summaries and critical analyses of research results - Surveys of current practices - Critical analyses of concepts, theories, or practices - Development of concepts, theories, or practices - Analyses of successes and failures - Comparisons and/or 4
analyses of case studies The research must have an enduring or practical value. Quest Volunteer of the Year Award 2017 Purpose The purpose of this award is to recognise and honour a PMINZ member who has made a voluntary and significant contribution to the members and/or development of the chapter during the year. The nominee must be a current PMINZ member in good standing The nominee must have sustained service to PMINZ for a minimum of one year, preferably longer The nominee must have demonstrated added value to PMINZ through voluntary contributions to the PMINZ as a whole as assessed by PMINZ staff The nominee must have demonstrated service to the members or the chapter as assessed by PMINZ staff Nomination must be endorsed by a PMINZ Office holder (either regionally or nationally). Self-nomination is not permitted The winner from 2017, is ineligible to enter the 2018 award. Criteria The nominee has demonstrated significant progressive contributions on behalf of PMINZ that support the recognition of PMI as the world s leader in project management The nominee has made significant achievements in the profession that expand and advance project management knowledge, use, and applications, and has also made significant contributions to the activities of the PMINZ. 4. The Awards Entry Process i) Download this Information Pack and the Word formatted entry form for the category of PMINZ Award you are preparing a nomination for from the PMINZ conference website http://www.projectmanagementconference.org.nz/awards/. If you are not sure of what category to enter, please contact the Awards Team on awards@pmi.nz ii) Save your competed entry form as a pdf and email it to awards@pmi.nz Make sure you include any additional evidence that has been requested. (Note: do not send a file larger than 5MB) iii) Your entry will go directly from the Awards Team to the Judges, and will not be sighted by any other party iv) The Judging Panel may request additional material to support the application v) Your entry will be considered by a panel of Judges. Finalists will be selected from those nominations that the Judges determine have met all the entry criteria, and are of sufficient standard to be worthy of the Award. There is no limit to the number of finalists that may be selected vi) Finalists will be announced 9 August 2018. vii) The Judges may require a site visit of the finalists between 28 July 2018 and 6 August 2018 5
viii) ix) All nominees are encouraged to attend the Awards dinner, which will be held in conjunction with the Project Management Conference on Thursday 20 September 2018 in at Sky City Auckland. We are expecting over 450 guests, making the Conference and Awards evening the biggest project management event of the year. In the event of any issues arising in the judging process, a respected Judging Adjudicator will be appointed and empowered to facilitate and preside over the resolution process. 5. Some Helpful tips for award entrants Do let us know that you have an entry coming. We need to brief the judges on the volume of the entries they will be judging this year Do contact the Awards team if you have any questions about the process - while we cannot comment on your individual nomination throughout the judging process, we can help you put together your nomination by the closing date and make the process clear and transparent Do include supporting documentation, the Judging Panel may contact you for additional information, the more you can provide upfront, the stronger your application Do complete your nomination form as early as possible Do let us know if there are any barriers to you entering or nominating someone, we can find people in your local PMINZ branch to help you out. Do not contact any of the Judges about any of the nominations. 7. The Judging panel The Judging panel will be announced at the Project Management Conference Awards dinner on the 20 September 2018. Judges are chosen for their depth and breadth of knowledge. All Judges work under a non-disclosure agreement and are asked to identify any potential conflict of interests prior to judging. 8. 2018 Award Sponsors Sponsoring a PMINZ Award is an occasion for your company to be associated with celebrating excellence.
