7 Beat the Heat! Summer heat tips will help you stay healthier and more comfortable when the really hot weather hits! Many seniors do not adjust well to temperature changes and some medical conditions and/or medications may further alter the body s ability to adapt to changes in temperature. Here are Some Tips: Activity, including exercise, should be done early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the temperatures are lower. Avoid late morning and early afternoon heat. Stay in air-conditioned environments or the lowest level indoors in non-air-conditioned environments. Decrease the strain on the body by gradual exposure over 2-3 days to hot weather. Drink at least four 8-oz. glasses of water and avoid alcoholic beverages. Know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses so that you can react timely and minimize your risk. Join us for a FREE presentation: Beat the Heat Courtesy of In Home Rehab Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at 1:30 PM L1-2 & Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at 1:30 PM L2-L Strawberry Facts! By Brian K. Rosso, M.S., R.D. The Michigan strawberry season will be here before you know it. I hope you enjoy the following facts about this delicious fruit: Eight strawberries provide only 45 calories, 140 percent of the RDA for vitamin C and three grams of fiber. One strawberry contains about 200 seeds. Strawberries are the only fruit with seeds found on the outside instead of the inside. The only way to harvest strawberries is by hand. The largest strawberry ever picked was half a pound. Historically, strawberries represent peace and prosperity. The average American eats 4.85 pounds of strawberries annually. Strawberries offer the most flavor when eaten at room temperature. Strawberries are a member of the rose family. Birds are responsible for the spread of strawberry seeds across the country. Belgium offers a museum dedicated entirely to strawberries. Visit an American House today and enjoy some strawberries. News & Notes DID YOU KNOW? Every evening in the Dining Room there are treats and beverages served! Join us at 8 p.m. We hope to see you! Wii Games Wii Bowling Leagues: Every Wednesday, 6:30, L1-L & L2-2 Join us for a fun and friendly competition! If you would like to join a Wii Bowling Team, please see Sarah! We have room for everyone to play! Speak Up! Our Resident Meeting will be held at Lakeside I on June 22! This is an informal meeting where all residents are encouraged to voice their suggestions and concerns! We also have suggestion boxes near the activity calendars in the lobby for residents to submit written suggestions anonymously!
