Flying the Flag (July-August) Independence Day, the Fourth of July, is a time of celebration. It is a time of parades, waving the flag, and patriotism. It is honoring the Declaration of Independence and paying respect for the Flag, while honoring our history. As the Fourth falls on Monday this year, the parade in Overgaard will be on Saturday, July 2 nd. Also, July 27 th is National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day. During August, there are no designated fly your flag days, however there are a few days that you may want to. August 1 st is Air Force Day and on the 4 th the U. S. Coast Guard establishment in 1790 is recognized. The 14 th is noted for the surrender of Japan, ending WWII, and is also National Navajo Code Talkers Day. The 16 th is National Airborne Day, the 19 th is National Aviation Day, and the 24 th is Women's Equality Day. This past June 14 th, we celebrated Flag Day, which had been established by President Woodrow Wilson 100 years ago in 1916 as a National Holiday. The June 14 date goes back to 1777, the Marine Committee of the 2nd Continental Congress, Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation. However, it never stated how the stars in the blue field were to be arranged. It has become one of those things that makes the U. S. Flag flexible, perhaps to represent growth. Betsy Ross is often credited with making the first design in June of 1776 with 13 stars and 13 stripes along with beginning a lifelong flag-making career. There were many other versions of the 13 stars but Ross's had the stars in a circle pointing outward to show equality. Her design changed the 6-point to 5-point stars because they were easier to sew. Continental Grand Union 1775-77 Betsy Ross 13-star variant Typical National design 1777-95 Margaret Manny is known with making the Grand Union flag for the Continental Army. Rebecca Young was also known to have made the first flag(s). Francis Hopkinson claimed he sketched the first design with six-point stars in rows in the blue field. With other variations of the flag being made at the same time Ross was sewing her design, there may not be one "first" flag, but many. There were at least 17 flag makers and upholsterers who worked in Philadelphia during the time the flag was made. Though her story wasn't told until the 1870's by her descendants, Betsy Ross became a woman ahead of her time. She outlived three husbands, two to the War, and ran a woman owned business for 30 plus years, while raising seven children. She was an attractive woman and legend has it that she had the attention of a British officer longer than she should have. Meanwhile, Washington was crossing the Delaware to defeat the Hessians at Trenton, the turning point of the Revolution. In 1795, the number of stars and stripes was increased from 13 to 15 to reflect the entry of two new states of the Union. Rebecca Young's daughter, Mary Pickersgill, made the Star Spangled Banner Flag that went to Fort McHenry outside Baltimore. It was the 15-star, 15-stripe flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write "Defence of Fort M'Henry", later known as "The Star Spangled Banner", our national anthem. The flag is currently on display at the Smithsonian in a two-story chamber that protects the flag while it is on view. In 1818, when five more states entered the Union, it was resolved that the Flag will go back to 13 stripes and remain as such to honor the 13 original colonies. Only the number of stars in the blue field will increase. Still, no standard arrangement of the stars was defined but left up to the flag maker. There are few blue field variants throughout our history that were allowed for Naval Ensigns or Army Regiments. The resolution specified that new flag designs should become official on the first July 4 following admission of one or more new states. The current design of the U.S. flag is its 27th; the design of the flag has been modified officially 26 times since 1777. The 48-star flag was in effect for 47 years since 1912 until the 49-star version became official on July 4, 1959. The 50-star flag was ordered by President Eisenhower on August 21, 1959, and was adopted in July 1960. It is the longest-used version of the U.S. flag and has been in use so far now, over 56 years. The 49-star flag may remain the shortest that was ever in use. Fly your Flag proudly, no matter how many stars. - Jim Steckbauer Post 86
