It offers a route for doctors and nurses working in emergency settings who wish to continue their professional development in this area. The programme is offered on-line and is based around a virtual hospital, St Emlyn s, with problembased learning and on-line tutorials, web links and discussion sites. The programme consists of a number of units that cover clinical emergency practice, management, research and other areas of emergency care from which the student can select a personalised route for academic assessment. 24 Programme Rationale This Masters level programme delivers an educational programme for clinicians working in emergency settings and academic recognition for the professional training undertaken by physicians on UK training pathways in this area. It offers a route for doctors and nurses working in emergency settings who wish to continue their professional development in diverse emergency care settings. Its specific design is the result of collaboration with the North West Medical Deanery, with the Ministry of Defence and with Emergency clinicians across the UK and internationally. Because of this design, it is able to offer education for clinicians in any emergency care setting, across the world and recruitment reflects this. This periodic review reflects major modifications made in 2012, which approved routes in Military Emergency Medicine, Paediatric Emergency Medicine and Emergency Nursing. These add to the route in Emergency Medicine. The number of units within the programme enables students to pick a very personalised route and the unit assessments, particularly in clinical units, encourage the use of reflection, a new tool to many physicians. Units are available on a 3-year rolling programme to ensure viability of units. 25 QAA Benchmark Statement(s) There are no QAA subject benchmark statements currently available in this discipline, at Masters level. Students will have achieved benchmarks for undergraduate training in medicine or nursing and will build on these during this programme and through their professional training and education. The programme team have taken the College of Emergency Medicine Curriculum for Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine (2006 and 2010) into consideration when developing this curriculum.
