As the largest institutional funder in Anne Arundel County, we remain committed to improving our communities by supporting programs that make significant impact and provide measurable outcomes so that all county residents can live healthy, vibrant, and successful lives. 2016 was a year of building momentum for CFAAC. We increased our asset base from $6 million to $9.5 million in one year which has allowed us to increase our impact in Anne Arundel County. We partnered with individuals and agencies to open 14 new funds, four of which are permanently endowed to support the needs of our county now and in the future. We also welcomed three new Legacy Circle members who have pledged a portion of their estate to us. We also expanded our Community Leadership activities in 2016. In January, we released our fifth biennial Poverty Amidst Plenty: Striving to Achieve Progress for All community needs assessment. This report increases knowledge and awareness as well as helps to frame informed discussions about persistent local trends and needs. We launched the Strengthening Nonprofits Collaborative with key community partners to leverage, align, and promote resources to better support skills development and training for nonprofit professionals in the county. Guided by our Board of Trustees, we set a new strategic course for CFAAC for the next three years that builds on the success of our past while keenly focusing on both the immediate and long-term needs of Anne Arundel County residents. Thanks to all of you, Anne Arundel County is becoming a more vibrant and healthy community for all. And, thanks to our donors and partners, CFAAC continues to play an important role. This is why the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County will continue to work towards growing philanthropy one person, one family, one business at a time. GRANT SPOTLIGHT STRENGTHENING NONPROFITS A strong nonprofit community is collaborative and made up of organizations that efficiently and effectively manage their operations and provide highquality programs that meet community needs. We believe that one of the best ways to strengthen our community is by helping to strengthen nonprofits. Nonprofits are doing vital and innovative work every day all over the county. The Strengthening Nonprofits Collaborative (SNC) was formed to leverage, align and promote resources to better support skills development and training for nonprofit professionals in the county. CFAAC convenes the following partners to provide more comprehensive and coordinated capacity building training to nonprofits in the county: Anne Arundel Community College Sarbanes Center for Public and Community Service Anne Arundel County Public Library Funding Information Network Partner Anne Arundel County Volunteer Center Arts Council of Anne Arundel County Collectively, the SNC provided over 25 skills development and training opportunities to nonprofit professionals in 2016. Our Strengthening Nonprofits Fund has provided $54,515 in grants since 2005. In 2016, nearly $3,000 in grants were awarded to Anne Arundel County nonprofit organization staff members, volunteers and board members to participate in fundraising and development, nonprofit management, board development, marketing and communications, and other capacity building opportunities. HELP OUR NEIGHBORS In response to significant increases in calls for urgent assistance for basic human needs, the Help Our Neighbors Fund has provided more than $67,000 in grants since 2008 to local nonprofits that assist individuals and families in need. Grants from this fund are made to local agencies that help people pay for important expenses like rent and utilities which enables them to stay in their homes and keep warm or cool. The fund also pays fees for licenses and certification or transportation to work, essential medication, and medical care to return to or maintain good health. Recently HOPE for All has experienced a number of difficult referrals and requests due to domestic violence, family reunification, aids victim, child protective service request. Without the funds we received from CFAAC - beds, linens, and other essential items could not have been provided to these families, and in some cases families would not have been able to stay together. GRANT SPOTLIGHT GRANTS 4 TEACHERS Grants 4 Teachers funds highly creative ideas that otherwise would not be possible to implement in the classroom due to school system funding constraints. We want to help support teachers creative ideas to stimulate and inspire students learning. In 2016, eleven teachers in Anne Arundel County public schools stretched their students imaginations and skill sets thanks to grants from the Grants 4 Teachers Fund. Projects touched different schools in all parts of the county and were each funded in amounts from $200-500 for a total of $5,863. Since the Fall of 2009 when Grants 4 Teachers was launched, due to the generosity of local donors, 133 proposals have been funded for a total of $59,267. LADDERS TO SUCCESS Ladders to SUCCESS is a CFAAC grantmaking initiative that invests in local nonprofit organizations that provide opportunities for increasing long-term economic stability or academic advancement for lowincome individuals and youth in Anne Arundel County. Ladders to SUCCESS is a CFAAC grantmaking initiative that invests in local nonprofit organizations that provide opportunities for increasing long-term economic stability or academic advancement for low-income individuals and youth in Anne Arundel County. The Ladders to SUCCESS grant program was created in 2009 and has awarded over $1 million dollars to Anne Arundel County nonprofits. With the Grants 4 Teachers funding we have been able to create different makerspace centers in our library so that students can come in and choose which activities most appeal to them. The children have swarmed to both the BluTrack and marble track centers. It has been great to see students working together in these areas. It has required teamwork, ingenuity, and a willingness to try new ideas when their initial attempts failed. We created Lego Walls in the media center as well which are now permanent fixtures and allow students to create with legos whenever they have the chance. This grant has been a huge boon to our school s growing makerspace and the kids have benefited from it tremendously. Susan R. Clouse, Media Specialist, Crofton Meadows Elementary School Candace, a 33-year old mother of four children is a recent graduate of the 16th class of Culinary Arts in the B.E.S.T. Program. She works hard every day to maintain her sobriety and recovery from addiction, and recently rejoined the workforce at her first job in three years at The Lighthouse Bistro. The bistro, which opened early last month, trains its employees with the basic skills needed to obtain and maintain employment in the restaurant industry. Candace expresses her sincere appreciation for the program and has already convinced three people to apply for the current B.E.S.T. class. She is excited to continue working with Light House Bistro and is extremely motivated to get to work utilizing her newfound culinary skills.
