MEDIUM/SMALL SCHOOL DIVISIONS Texas Academic Decathlon Competitors: CONGRATULATIONS! You are a winner! In this packet, you will find all the materials you need to take your next step in competing in the Texas Academic Decathlon, Medium/Small School Divisions, scheduled for February 24-27, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas. CONTEST VENUES San Antonio College is host to the 2011 Texas Medium/Small Schools Academic Decathlon. We will have Friday's Speech/Interview contests and team photos at our campus, located at 1300 San Pedro Avenue, San Antonio, Texas; Friday s Essay event and Saturday's arena testing will be in the Omni s Grand Ballroom; and the Super Quiz will be at McAllister Auditorium back on the campus of San Antonio College. HOTEL This year's host hotel is the Omni San Antonio, 9821 Colonnade Boulevard, San Antonio, Texas. The Omni San Antonio is located in northwest San Antonio at IH-10 and Wurzbach Road. The hotel is just a short 15-minute drive from the San Antonio International Airport and the Riverwalk. To register, simply log on to the Omni San Antonio, select More options, select the Omni San Antonio, the dates you need to reserve, the number of rooms needed (if you need more than three rooms, you need to do this procedure again), and place the number 14300104972 in the Group Code under Special Rates, and then Check Availability. Registration must be completed by February 9, 2011. Rooms are limited, so make your reservations as soon as possible. Discounted room rates for the Omni Hotel are as follows: $105 single and $125 for double/triple/quad. Families, school administrators, teachers and other guests will also be offered the same rates as the ACADEC participants; however, they will need to make their reservations directly with the hotel by February 9, 2011. Each team/guest will be responsible for payment of hotel rooms and other hotel incidentals. REGISTRATION Please note that all credentials and team lists must be sent to our registration office by Wednesday, February 9, 2011. We recommend that an overnight express mail service be utilized to ensure that your documents arrive and that your school's team is included in the state meet. All team members and coaches should plan to arrive at the hotel either Thursday evening or early Friday morning in time for registration. Coaches will need to attend the Coaches' Briefing at the hotel on Friday at 10:15 a.m. Teams should plan to arrive at the Omni Hotel by 12:30 p.m., Friday. The first event of the Decathlon, the Essay event, will begin at 1:00 p.m.

TRANSPORTATION We will NOT be providing transportation for teams to any venues. Please contact your school's travel agent to arrange for local transportation. TEAM MEALS Saturday lunches may be purchased for $8 each. Friday dinner and Saturday breakfast will be of the team's choosing. Indicate the specific number of lunches that your team will require on the enclosed Team Meals Request Form. Return this form, along with accompanying check(s), if necessary, by February 9, 2011. AWARDS BANQUETS The Awards Banquets will be held on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at 7:45 a.m. (Small School Division) and 10:30 a.m. (Medium School Division), at the Omni San Antonio hotel. Team (nine students/two coaches) tickets will cost $20 each for the breakfast and $25 each for the luncheon. Other tickets for the Awards Banquet will cost $25 per person for the breakfast and $30 for the luncheon. NOTE: ALL non-team tickets MUST be ordered through the school. I will accept checks from either the school or the coach(es) ONLY. Indicate the number of banquet tickets that your team will require (including all guests) on the enclosed Awards Banquet Reservation Form. Return this form, along with your check(s), by February 9, 2011. No Purchase Orders will be accepted. Tickets for the Awards Banquet are on a first comefirst served basis. There will be NO refunds after February 18, 2011. Banquet tickets will be numbered for seating at specific tables. We will do our best to assure that guests are seated as close as possible to their teams. Appropriate attire for this event would be the same as your students wore for the interview/speech events. Please remember there are school administrators, board members, state office personnel, and parents present. MEMORABILIA Contestants and coaches (eleven total per team) will receive complimentary dated souvenir pens and lapel pins. Indicate the number of T-shirts (Sizes S-XXL) needed for your team, family, and school administrators on the enclosed form and return it, along with your check, by February 9, 2011. Again, congratulations to your team for advancing to the Texas Academic Decathlon. Feel free to duplicate any of the materials in this packet for your administrators, teachers, and parents to support the team by coming to this event. If you have questions, please contact me. Exemption certification MUST be presented upon check-in; however, application is contingent upon Texas State Comptroller's Office approval. RESERVATION GUARANTEE Teams and individual attendees may reserve their rooms by following the instructions above or by calling 1-800-The-Omni (1-800-843-6664). The hotel must receive reservations by February 9, 2011, in order for the room rates listed above to be honored. ROOMS ARE LIMITED, SO BOOK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Participants MUST identify themselves as being with the Texas Academic Decathlon when making reservations. All individuals/teams will be responsible for their own room, tax, and incidental charges. Texas Academic Decathlon will not guarantee payment for no-shows.

MEDIUM/SMALL SCHOOL DIVISIONS Student Dress Code The following student dress code will apply to all Texas Academic Decathlon contests. Team uniforms for both boys and girls are optional. Boys: Shirt and slacks; shirt and designer denim and/or jeans Girls: Dress, skirt/slacks and blouse and designer denim and/or jeans. Distracting apparel, including hats or any kind (except those worn for religious reasons), excessively baggy, torn or ragged denim and/or jeans, shall be considered inappropriate. If a test proctor, meet official, or coach observes violations of the dress code, the student should be given the opportunity to comply with the dress code prior to competition in an event. Once a student has been allowed to compete in an event, he or she may NOT be disqualified because of dress code violations. Failure to comply with dress standards may result in disqualification from the event, the entire competition, and/or the awards ceremony. The decision of the competition coordinator is final. Code of Student Conduct The Texas Academic Decathlon competition expects all team members to conduct themselves in a proper manner while attending the Texas Academic Decathlon event. This includes all of the travel, hotel and sightseeing associated with their participation in the event. Appropriate conduct of team members is the sole responsibility of the team coach/school administrator who has the legal responsibility of chaperone for his/her team members at all times. Students should be under the supervision of the coach/school administrator during all activities. Inappropriate conduct includes but is not limited to: 1. Being in possession of any weapon 2. Damage to or vandalism of any property 3. Appropriation of memorabilia from the competition site premises 4. Use of alcohol or illegal drugs by students regardless of age 5. Use of water pistols, water balloons or other creative missiles at the competition site 6. Fighting, loud noise, or any other behavior which is disruptive to others at the competition site Financial liability for all damage incurred by actions of a team member shall be the sole responsibility of that team member and his/her parents. Failure to comply with the Code of Student Conduct may result in disqualification from the event, the entire competition, and the awards ceremony. In case of any incident the Executive Director of the Texas Academic Decathlon shall convene a panel of three board members to discuss the matter and determine the appropriate action. Appropriate action may include individual and/or team disqualification.

Texas Academic Decathlon Competitors: TEXAS ACADEMIC DECATHLON TEAM PHOTO INFORMATION CONGRATULATIONS to you and your team for advancing to the Texas Academic Decathlon Medium/Small School contest! Please share the following information with your team members prior to your trip to San Antonio for the state meet so they are aware of these opportunities concerning publicity photos and award memorabilia. If you or your team members would like to purchase photos or plaques, you may do so at the time the photos are taken. To save time (and money) during the meet, I encourage you to submit your orders prior to February 18, 2011. I will be taking your team photo around the time of your speech and interview sessions ONLY. Because time is limited, please have the names of students, coaches, and your school name typed or printed on the form below AND on individual 3x5 index cards. This will allow proper name placement and spelling on the plaque(s), if ordered. You may bring the form with you or mail it early with your order. Please bring the index cards to the photo shoot at San Antonio College. The photographer is NOT responsible for typographical errors if names on index cards are not typed. The plaques are 8 x10 in size and will have a 5 x7 photo mounted under acrylic. At the bottom is a plate with team and members names. Cost of the plaque is $50. The 12 x16 plaque with an 8 x10 photo is $65. Unmounted photos will be 5 x7 in size and will be enclosed in a protective folder that will also serve as a frame and stand for the photo. Cost of the photos is $15. Taxes are included in these prices. To offset mailing costs, $10 will be charged for each separate mailing address. Due to the large number of participating teams, orders placed on or after February 25, 2011, will be $20 for the photo, $55 for the small plaque, and $70 for the large plaque.
