Page: 1 of 8 SCOPE The content and application of this policy has been approved by the Mordialloc Pre- School Centre Committee of Management and forms part of the total Policy Manual This Policy applies to children enrolled at the Pre-school, their parents/guardians, the staff, Committee of Management, and anyone on the Pre-school premises REVIEW DATE This Policy shall be reviewed every year, next review April 2013 or as dictated to by changes of regulations. BACKGROUND The Occupational Health and Safety (Commonwealth Employment) Act 1991 and Victorian Health and Safety Act 2004 (with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007 (Vic.) require that the employer take reasonable practicable steps to develop an OH&S policy that will: Enable effective co-operation between the employer and the employees in promoting and developing measures to ensure the employees health, safety and welfare at work Provide adequate mechanisms for reviewing the effectiveness of the measures. POLICY Mordialloc Pre-School is a class 01 Centre and the Committee of Management recognise the need to adhere to the Children s Services Regulations 2009. Mordialloc Pre-School will promote and maintain the health, safety and well-being of staff and members by aiming to: Protect the health and safety of all employees, members and other persons at or near our centre. Prevent accidents and ill health caused by environmental or working conditions. Place and maintain staff in an occupational environment designed to satisfy their needs for health, safety and well-being at work.procedures The committee is responsible for: Mordialloc Preschool Occupational Health and Safety policy 1
Page: 2 of 8 Consulting with staff in relation to identification and risk assessment of any hazards that may cause injury (refer to the Hazard Identification checklist in Appendix 1). Developing procedures for the removal or minimisation of those hazards. Staff are responsible for Regularly inspect toys, furniture and indoor equipment and organise repairs as required and without delay. Regularly inspect yard and outdoor equipment and organise repairs, removals as required and without delay. Floors will be kept in good repair and free of spills, toys and tripping hazards. Hazardous materials will be kept in accordance with Hazardous Chemical Policy. Hot beverages will be kept away and out of reach from the children at all times. Children will be kept out of kitchen, storage and office areas at all times. Storage areas will be maintained so as to minimise all risks. Smoking is not permitted on the premises. Fire equipment will be maintained and Emergency Policy adhered to The parents/guardians are responsible for Reporting observations and/or concerns about potential hazards to staff or committee president. A Licensee of the Pre-school will notify DEECD Children's Services Advisers on 9096 9595 of any serious incident resulting from an OH&S situation. Immediately if a death or major injury has resulted Within 48 hours if another notifiable outcome has occurred The Licensee will also: Mordialloc Preschool Occupational Health and Safety policy 2
Page: 3 of 8 And Ensure that an Incident Form has been completed That the appropriate persons have been notified to commence paperwork such as: o Workcover o Insurance Claim Progressive Procedure A Committee Member will, in conjunction with staff, review the Hazard Identification Checklist (Appendix 1) and assess the associated risks. This list will be used and updated annually and attached to this policy as an appendix. EVALUATION This policy will be reviewed immediately should any serious incident occur related to OH&S.
