Minutes of prior meeting: Motion to suspend reading of and accept the minutes as published made by Thomas Glander, second by Jeff Gibson, motion passed. Correspondence: Adjutant Cherry stated that the Detachment received a copy of a letter from National to Department Adjutant Akers, which combined Squadron 22 and Squadron 149 into Squadron 22. Resolutions: Judge Advocate Miller stated that a resolution was received that did not pertain to the Detachment of Alabama, so it was marked as received and filed. Judge Advocate Miller read resolution from Squadron 88/Post 88, Mobile, for Blair Miles to run for National Vice Commander, Southern Region, for 2019-2020. Motion to accept and forward the resolution was made by Thomas Glander, second by Willie Dupree, motion passed. Meeting recessed for break at 10:22 am. Meeting reconvened at 10:36 am. Motion to suspend order of business for elections was made by Thomas Glander, second by John Burke, motion passed. Commander Blair Miles turned podium over to Adjutant Cherry to conduct elections. Adjutant Cherry presented the Nominating Committee Candidates for the 2018-2019 Officers, Sons of the American Legion, Detachment of Alabama, as follows: Commander: Vice Commander Area 1: Vice Commander Area 2: Vice Commander Area 3: Vice Commander Area 4: Vice Commander Area 5: NEC Alt. NEC: Chaplain: Sargent-at-Arms 1: Sargent-at-Arms 2: Blair Miles OPEN OPEN Jeff McNair David W. Duffey Aaron Phillips Thomas Glander Jeff Gibson Mark Fronduti Willie Dupree Steven Jillson Nominations from the floor opened for Commander. No nominations were made from floor, so nominations for Commander was closed. Since candidate for Commander is unopposed, motion that Adjutant cast one vote for Blair Miles made by Thomas Glander, second by Matt Gaff, motion passed. Adjutant Cherry cast 1 vote, electing Blair Miles as 2018-2019 Commander, Detachment of Alabama. Nominations from the floor opened for all other officers. There were no nominations for NEC, Alternate NEC, Vice Commander Area 3, Vice Commander Area 4, Finance Officer, Chaplain, Sargent-at-Arms 1, or Sargent-at-Arms 2. Motion to nominate Steve Bowling for Vice Commander Area 1 made by Aaron Phillips, second by Jeremy Blevins, motion passed. Motion to nominate Terry Robinsky for Vice Commander Area 2 made by Aaron Phillips, second by Thomas Glander, motion passed. Motion to nominate Matt Gaff for Vice Commander Area 5 and withdraw himself as a candidate made by Aaron Phillips, second by Thomas Glander, motion passed.

Nominations closed. Since candidates for Detachment Officers are unopposed, motion that Adjutant cast one vote for officer candidates made by Thomas Glander, second by Buddy Miller, motion passed. Adjutant Cherry cast 1 vote, electing candidates as 2018-2019 Officers, Detachment of Alabama. Motion to close elections made by Thomas Glander, second by Jeff Gibson, motion passed. Order of Business resumed at 10:51 am. Guest Speaker: Guest speaker, Mark A. Cannito, National Vice Commander, Southern Region, did not make the Detachment of Alabama Convention due to flight problems. New Business: Jeff Gibson reported that members of Squadron 9, Squadron 114, and Squadron 171 received patches from the Patch Program started by the American Legion Auxiliary and opened up to include the SAL this year. Thomas Glander informed every one of the cost involved for a candidate for National Office. He stated that the Department of Alabama will be handling Blair s campaign fund and that it would be great if Squadrons donated to the campaign fund. Thomas Glander then made a motion that the Detachment donate $1000 to the candidacy of Blair Miles for 2019-2020 National Vice Commander, Southern Region, second by Buddy Miller. Finance Officer Cherry pointed out that this expense is not in the budget. Thomas Glander then amended his motion to the Detachment donate $1000, to be taken from reserves, to the candidacy of Blair Miles for 2019-2020 National Vice Commander, Southern Region, second by David Duffey, motion passed. David Duffey pledged $250 donation to Blair s campaign fund from Squadron 135. Steve Bowling pledged $1000 donation to Blair s campaign fund from Squadron 237. Matt Gaff pledged $2000 donation to Blair s campaign fund from District 33 Legion Family. Adjutant Cherry stated that, according to the Detachment of Alabama Constitution, the incoming and outgoing Detachment Commander, Detachment Adjutant and NEC are automatically delegates to the National Convention. All other delegates must be voted on by the Detachment. Motion to accept Aaron Phillips and Jeff Gibson as delegates to the National Convention made by Buddy Miller, second by David Duffey, motion passed. Adjutant Cherry stated that the VAVS Hospital Representatives are appointed by the Detachment Commander for 2 year terms and new appointments are needed. Commander Blair Miles appointed Jeff Gibson for the Tuskegee VA Hospital and Ron Haygood for the Birmingham Hospital. Motion to accept Commander Blair Miles appointments made by John Burke, second by Steven Jillson, motion passed. Ron Haygood stated that he has been appointed to be the 2018-2019 SAL Advisor and that he would like the SAL to be more involved in the Leadership Program.

Good of the SAL: 100% Squadron membership certificates were presented by Aaron Phillips to 32 Squadrons. Detachment Officer awards were presented by Commander Blair Miles. Certificate of Appreciation from the Department of Alabama was presented to Commander Blair Miles by SAL Advisor Jeremy Blevins. Squadron of the Year Award was present to Squadron 135 by Commander Blair Miles. Son of the Year Award was present to Jeff Gibson by Commander Blair Miles. Adjutant Cherry said that the back table has literature, applications, brochures, etc. New Squadron Handbooks are also on the table, but please only take 2 per squadron. Jeff Gibson request to keep his daughter, who recently lost everything in apartment fire, in your prayers. Benediction by Thomas Glander. Meeting Adjourned by Commander Blair Miles at 11:49 am.
