Raising Student Achievement CONFERENCE 2004 December 6-8, 2004 Pheasant Run Resort St. Charles, Illinois Welcome to the Raising Student Achievement Conference Welcome to the Annual K-12 Statewide Raising Student Achievement Conference 2004 (RSAC). This conference has been specifically designed with Illinois school districts in mind. Therefore, we have selected our theme: As the RSAC planning committee designed this year s conference, they were very mindful of the challenges that face our school districts. With the pressure on teachers, administrators and districts to out perform their past test scores, the Raising Student Achievement Conference focus will deliver high quality instructional sessions to district teams on Subgroup Populations, Content Instruction, Data Analysis for School Improvement Planning and School Community Culture. This four-pronged program has over 140 sessions, daily keynote speakers, four administrators academies and several featured speakers. Each domain has been carefully selected for its sound, research-based, user friendly strategies to take back to your district for all students whether they are gifted, at risk, have special needs, or are in the mainstream. We look forward to seeing you in St. Charles! Regional Offices of Education in collaboration with the Intermediate Service Centers, and ISBE EBD/PBIS

General Conference Information Keynote Addresses Dr. Robert Marzano Monday, Dec. 6 What Works in Schools Dr. Robert Marzano is president of Marzano & Associates. He is the author of more than 20 books, 150 articles and chapters in books, and more than 100 curriculum guides and related materials for teachers and students in grades K-12. His works include Classroom Management that Works, What Works in Schools, Classroom Instruction that Works, and multiple other publications. Over his 35 years in education, Marzano has worked in every U.S. state and a host of countries in Europe and Asia. The central theme of his work has been translating research and theory into practical programs and tools for K-12 teachers and administrators. Dr. Marzano will show you how these strategies help students of all ages and learning levels to achieve more in a wide variety of subjects. Dr. Samuel Betances Tuesday, Dec. 7 Ensuring the Success of All Students in Our Multicultural Society Recognized as a gifted, inspirational, and motivational speaker, Dr. Samuel Betances insights and commitment to diversity issues rank him as invaluable in empowering leadership in the public and private sector. As a sociologist, educator, and professor of 20 years, he has taught race relations, the U.S. Latino experience, church and society, education and reform, and gender issues. His national and international travels, media exposure, sense of humor and bilingual/bicultural roots greatly enhance his creative commitment to equity and excellence in making diversity a plus for the bottom line. This great motivator was not supposed to make it. Out of the bowels of inner city poverty, stigma of minority group status, violence, welfare, and illiteracy in two languages, he arose. With strong spiritual convictions and his passion for reading, Samuel Betances has taken the hard lessons from the mean streets of life and reshaped them into his personal vision. He embarked on a journey from dropping out of school to a Doctorate from Harvard University.
