Tales Of Students Out In The Real World ~ Three Different Programs IHS Offers Freshmen Career Day On Friday, June 9, all freshmen participated in Career Day. Professionals from the Ipswich community and beyond gave brief informative presentations during which students learned about the direct correlation of education and career opportunities. Students chose two career clusters which they would like to learn more from people currently working in those job fields. Representatives from the Ipswich Police Department, Paws with Inn, New England Aquarium, and the Institution for Savings were just a few of the guest presenters. Sophomore/Junior Job Shadowing Day On Tuesday, June 6, 25 Ipswich High School sophomores and juniors participated in Job Shadowing Day. Job Shadowing Day is a short-term one day educational experience which enables a student to spend time in a workplace, providing an up-close look at what a real job is like and how the skills they learn in school can be put into action. The student follows or shadows the employee for a specified time to better understand the requirements of a particular job or career. This year, students shadowed at locations from Ipswich to Boston. Below is a list of a few locations where IHS students shadowed a working professional: New England Biolabs North Shore Music Theatre Ipswich Electric Light Department Institution for Savings Spaulding Rehabilitation Meadowbrook Farm MAC Fitness The Residence at Riverbend Ipswich YMCA Ipswich Police Department Ipswich/Haverhill District Courts Winthrop and Doyon elementary schools The House of Peace Essex County District Attorney s Office Winthrop and Doyon elementary schools Logan Airport Senior Internship BRIDGE Program The BRIDGE Program is the senior year component of the IHS School-to-Work Program. Through a five week, full-time internship, seniors learn what skills are necessary and what it takes to succeed in a career while gaining real-world experience. Eligible seniors participate in internships throughout the region in a wide variety of workplaces. At the culmination of the BRIDGE Program, each participant delivers a presentation highlighting his or her experience. Peers, teachers, administrators, and community members are part of the audience for these presentations which are held in the Dolan Performing Arts Center. This year, a record 44 seniors completed internships!! Below is a list of a few internship locations: If you have any questions about these programs, email Mr. Krieger in the History Department who is the School to Work Program administrator ~ jkrieger@ipsk12.net. The Class of 2017 had a blast during their Senior Week, which is the week that leads up to graduation for Ipswich seniors. The festivities kicked off with a cruise along Boston Harbor on a private yacht, where they enjoyed dinner, desserts, and music throughout the night. The following day, the seniors were entertained by a hypnotist, who made them laugh at the expense of a few good volunteers. After the amusement, the students spent the afternoon eating burgers and hot dogs with the principals, while enjoying a dual slip and slide and a popular dunk tank. Mr. Carovillano and Mr. Craven were great sports and made guests appearances in the tank. The students thoroughly enjoyed soaking their assistant principal and French teacher. On Thursday, the afternoon began with the senior slide show, which was a 20 minute presentation of photos of the class of 2017 throughout the years. A few tears were shed, but the mood was quickly uplifted when a taco truck and ice cream truck pulled up to IHS. After a feeding frenzy, the kids relaxed on the lawn, signing yearbooks, playing frisbee, and conversing with the faculty. The week capped off with the passing out of the senior class gift and a trip to Kimball Farm in Westford. While at the farm, the students ate a delicious lunch and enjoyed a three hour ice cream buffet. The calories were burned off on the water bumper boats, zip line, driving range, batting cages, beach volleyball courts, mini-golf course, and spin zone. It truly was a memorable and busy week. Thank you to the friends of the class of 2017 for making this week possible. The class of 2017 will be missed at IHS, but we are excited to see what is to come for them!
