Marine Corps League Detachment 165 Newsletter Commandant s Corner Marines and Sailors, Now begins the busy part of our year. Please remember to attend meetings when possible, and also to volunteer when your situations allows. Here is a breakdown of upcoming events and issues on (or that were on) the table. Birthday Ball proceeds: We have been discussing channeling the proceeds of our annual celebration into the building fund. We decided to table this issue again, due to lack of consensus. I will try to have more data to add to the next discussion. Minutes/ Financial Reporting: It has been decided that we will have password protection on our website, in order to protect this information from the view of the general public. A single password will be distributed to our membership in coming days. Meeting Time/Day Change: The idea here is to make meetings easier to attend for those that wish to do so, but are unable due to scheduling. One suggestion was to simply hold the meetings one hour earlier (6:00 pm). If you have an opinion on this, or a suggestion, please send me an email. (koperadp@yahoo.com). Adjutant: Robert Scott has graciously volunteered to be our Junior Vice Commandant, so we are left with the position of Adjutant to fill. Whomever it may be that decides to volunteer, I promise that I will make it very easy on you. Contact List: The list has circulated at more than one meeting, so now I will email it out to everyone, asking for any further corrections. Memorial Day Ceremony at Linwood Cemetery: On Friday May 22 nd, at 11:30 we will be participating in a short Memorial Day ceremony at Linwood Cemetery on Church Road, just off of West Long Lake Road. Directions to the cemetery will be available by contacting me, either via email or phone. Uniform will be short sleeve shirt, ribbons and badges, shoulder patches, red cover, and black dress trousers, black belt and black shoes. For anyone who needs to order uniform items in the meantime, The Marine Corps League s website has a page called The Semper Fi Store. Any items that you need should be available from the site. If you need help in the ordering process, please contact me. There will also be a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at the Grand Traverse Commons (old state hospital) on the Monday of Memorial Day. Uniform would be the same as at Linwood Cemetery, and if you intend to be there we need to know soon, if possible. The Coast Guard will have seats available for those that attend. Flag Day Distribution: As is custom, we will be distributing flags for donations near Flag Day (June 14 th ). Our distribution date is the 13 th of June (Saturday). Flags, signs, etc. will be handed out to volunteers at June s meeting, so if you are working a shift, please attend that meeting, in order to pick up you supplies. See below for more details. 2
Cherry Festival Parade: As in past years, there will be a section reserved in the parade line-up for veterans of all branches of service and members of veterans service organizations. This year the parade falls on July 11 th, at 11:15 am. This is the time that we should be standing by in the lineup. We like to try to wear MCL uniforms and stick together and there is usually a vehicle to ride in for those who can t walk the parade route. Let s try to have a good turnout to represent the Marine Corps League. Once again, please grace us with your presence so much as your circumstances allow, and don t forget to watch your email. There will be a roster sent out for you all to review and correct your contact information. Semper Fidelis, David Kopera Sgt/USMC (Ret.)
