PALMETTO PISCIFORUM Newsletter of the South Carolina Chapter of the American Fisheries Society www.scafs.org January 4, 2010 President s Message I wish to thank everyone who volunteered their time in organizing the 2009 SCAFS/SCFWA annual meeting. Though attendance was down due to budget cuts and travel restrictions, we had a very good meeting with informative presentations. The meeting was held in February at the Clemson University Outdoor Laboratory in Clemson, SC. New officers will be elected during the business meeting at the 2010 annual meeting. If you are interested in serving as an officer or if you would like to submit a name for nomination to office, please contact Marcel Reichert at ReichertM@dnr.sc.gov. The President-Elect officer position will be open for nominations. Marcel Reichert has volunteered to take the lead on the Nominating Committee and would appreciate your input. Anna Toline will serve as President in 2010 and 2011. Chris McDonnough has volunteered to take the lead on the Awards Committee. Chris will be soliciting nominations from you for the 2009 Conservationist of the Year Award. This award is presented at the annual meeting. The nomination form is attached to this newsletter and can be mailed to McDonoughC@dnr.sc.gov. The 2010 SCAFS and SCFWA joint annual meeting is scheduled for February 9-10 at the SCDNR Fort Johnson office in Charleston. SCFWA has taken the lead on meeting arrangements for 2010. SCFWA President David Wilkins has arranged to use the South Carolina Aquarium for the social. Go to http://scaquarium.org/ for information about the aquarium. A meeting announcement and registration form has been emailed to the membership and can also be found on our website. We will contact many of you to help us in organizing the meeting. Please let us know if you are available. Again, thanks go to Tim Snoots for his efforts in keeping our website up-to-date. Please give us your thoughts about the website and any suggestions for improvement. Also, let us know if you have any information or announcements to add to the website (www.scafs.org ). We look forward to seeing everyone at the 2010 annual meeting. Jeanne Riley SC-AFS President Fall Workshop 2009 "River Restoration and Fish Passage" was the subject of the SC-AFS Fall Workshop, cosponsored by the SCFWA. The workshop was held on November 19 at Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center in Georgetown, SC. Check our website in the near future for presentations from the workshop. Bayless Award for Best Professional Paper Andrew Ray, South Carolina DNR Andrew Ray was announced as the winner of the 2008 Bayless Award at our Annual Meeting on February 12, 2009 at the Clemson University Outdoor Lab, SC. The award was for Andrew s presentation Relationships between shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) growth parameters and microbial activity in zero-exchange culture systems which he presented on February 4, 2008 at

the SC-AFS annual meeting at Santee State Park, SC. The Bayless Award was created in honor of Jack D. Bayless, to recognize the best South Carolina presentation/paper given at each annual chapter meeting. Each year, volunteer judges evaluate presentations in the following categories: Significance to aquaculture and fisheries, Experimental design and analysis, Organization, Presentation, and Quality of visual aids. Presenters are scored on a scale of one to four, four being excellent, for each category. The presenter with the highest total score receives the award. Any members interested in volunteering as judges for the next annual meeting, or joining the Awards Committee, should contact SC-AFS President or President-elect. ><> <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< The meeting was opened with a welcome by Jeanne Riley, President of the SC-AFS.
