CALL FOR ABSTRACTS INVITATION The Chancellor of the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao and the Director of the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program are pleased to invite you to the 7th McNair Research Symposium, The Colors of Research, that will be held at the Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel & Casino, from April 25 th through 27 th, 2012. The beautiful historic city of San Juan will receive all our scholars when presenting their research projects and honors thesis. The discussion of research, discovery and creations will be the topic of the opening plenary session. We will be honored if you and your mentor(s) celebrate this important occasion with us. McNair and other Honors Programs are encouraged to sponsor their scholars and motivate them to participate in our Research Symposium. Come to the Caribbean during the most shining season of the year and celebrate your accomplishments with mentors, guest speakers and fellow scholars in a research-and-academic-oriented activity!

ABSTRACTS SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS An abstract is required for poster and oral presenters during the UPRH- McNair Research Symposium. The abstract should describe the project s objectives, methodology and should include a brief summary of the results. Microsoft Word 2003 or 2007 is the required format for preparing your abstract. Abstracts should be 150 words in length. The title of the project needs to be justified, in title case, bold and in font size 10. Your name, faculty advisor, department and school name follow the title in font size 10. Skip one line and write down your abstract in font size 10, justified. You may also write your abstracts in Spanish. Submit the abstract and registration form electronically no later than April 1, 2012. Submissions have to be sent electronically to the following email address: puertoricomcnairconference@gmail.com. No paper submissions, please. POSTER PRESENTATIONS / GALLERY WALK SESSION Poster presentations will be held at the hotel s foyer. Please bring your poster set on display board 36in. H X 48in. W (standard size). Poster session will be one and a half hour in length where presenters can cordially and informally interact with Symposium attendees. All posters should be prepared in English. Be ready for questions from the guests. Use your creativity to prepare your poster (main parts, title, pictures, graphs, etc.) making everything fit the 36in. H X 48in. W recommended size. Artwork expositions are also encouraged to register and present. If you have a collection of drawings, paintings or photography, you are invited to name your presentation, send an abstract and participate of the Symposium. Only one session will be held. This session will be limited to just 15 slots so do not procrastinate.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS For oral presentations there will be a podium, a multimedia projector and a laptop computer available for your usage. Please come and upload your presentation on the corresponding computer s desktop at least 15 minutes before the beginning of the session. We recommend you to use Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 (or 2007) and to bring the presentation in removable media: CD, DVD or USB (preferred). Save your presentation in a format that can be displayed in a laptop PC and test it prior to your presentation. Macs will not be available. We strongly suggest bringing a backup copy of your presentation in case of technology malfunction. Handouts are optional. Oral presentations will be 15 minutes in length with five additional minutes allotted to each presenter for questions from the audience. This schedule will be strictly enforced since many McNair and Honors scholars are expected to present on this occasion. Use the language you feel more comfortable with, English or Spanish, to perform your presentation, although slides should be in English. Registration Instructions All Symposium attendees have to register. Registration will be done by sending your personal information: name, university, and major to puertoricomcnairconference@gmail.com. We will immediately respond to you and send you the official registration form. Student presenters and faculty or administrative personnel must contact us by April 1, 2012 and must have submitted their abstract by this date. All payments have to be done by regular mail with an institutional check or MO. Registration Fee (non-refundable): Students $250 Faculty/Other $275 Registration includes most meals, symposium materials, and social event. Send MO or institutional check payable to McNair Program: University of Puerto Rico at Humacao, Call Box 860, Humacao, PR 00791. We are unable to accept credit card payments. HOTEL INFORMATION Reservations have to be done directly with hotel s front desk personnel. Please indicate any special need requirements upon placing your reservation. Scholars Program. For more information about the hotel s local area and resort features, please visit www.sheratonoldsanjuan.com. Directions from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport: Exit Highway 26 and travel west for approximately 5 miles. At the bridge, get in the left lane towards San Juan on Route 1. At the end of Route 1, turn right onto Marina Street. The hotel is on the 4th street to the right. For transportation, look for the Ground Transportation booths upon arrival to Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in order to get a taxi to take you to the hotel.
