PR030/18 28 April 2018 Chief Executive Commends Secondary-School Students for Application of STEM Knowledge at the Inaugural MTR STEM Challenge At the inaugural MTR STEM Challenge Pitch Day today (28 April 2018), Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Mrs Carrie Lam commended secondary-school students for applying STEM concepts to articulate their vision for Inclusive and Sustainable Communities. The Pitch Day was the finale of MTR Corporation s year-long STEM Challenge programme. Designed and supported by Junior Achievement Hong Kong, Hong Kong Education City and The Association for Computer Education, the programme aims to encourage secondaryschool students to stay curious about the world around them, and heighten their interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. Between September 2017 and March 2018, MTR colleagues delivered talks to 7,500 secondary schools students to explain the application of STEM knowledge in the planning, construction, and operations of a railway system. More than 300 students from 44 schools formed 57 teams to develop their vision for Inclusive and Sustainable Communities. Workshops were held for the participants who applied their 3D-printing skills to create a model that represents their vision. Mrs Lam met with participating students today and presented prizes to the winning teams. She encouraged them to continue to delve into STEM subjects as they are integral to Hong Kong s future development. She said, Inclusive and sustainable growth is a key focus for many economies around the world so that the fruits of development are enjoyed by all segments of society and that our next generation can achieve sustainable development. I am delighted to see that students taking part in this programme have applied technology to express their vision for Inclusive and Sustainable Communities and contribute their ideas to helping Hong Kong s sustainable development. Professor Frederick Ma, Chairman of MTR Corporation said, MTR Corporation is proud to support the Government s promotion of STEM education in Hong Kong. Our colleagues are excited to have the opportunity to share how STEM concepts are applied in the design, construction and operations of our railway system. We are committed to nurturing talent and Hong Kong s development by sharing our knowledge and equipping the next generation with the skills necessary to further enhance our quality of living. -more-

Led by Professor Frederick Ma, the judging panel members included Board Member of MTR Corporation Dr Dorothy Chan, Chairman of Junior Achievement Hong Kong Dr William Lo, Department Chairman of Department of Physics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Professor Dickon Ng and founders of local technology companies Mr Stark Chan and Mr Jason Chiu.
