256 All-Americans 65 Individual national Champions 23 Conference Titles JIMMY WHITE AWARD 94 Each year, the Takedown Club distributes awards for the outstanding freshman, most falls, MVP and the most improved wrestler. But the oldest award, and regarded as the most prestigious given to an OU wrestler, is the Jimmy White Award. The award is based on athletic accomplishment as well as team contribution, individual achievement and team spirit. Who was Jimmy White? He was not a national champion, nor considered a great Sooner wrestler. Some may never have heard of him or the award. Nevertheless, the distinguished honor has been presented since the 1969-70 season by his widow and founder of the award, Mrs. Jimmy White. James Enoch White is known in the pages of Sooner history as the man who beat Oklahoma A&M in 1932 and ended its 71-match winning streak. White s first two seasons at 126 pounds were spent behind Lawrence Mantooth, the Sooners first NCAA champion. In his first starting season (1931), White won five matches, including three falls, and lost one while becoming high-point man for the Sooners with 27.5 points. Great things were predicted for OU the following year. After winning their first six duals, the Sooners entered the armory in Stillwater with the goal of stopping the Aggies win streak, which dated back to 1921. For the Sooners to win, White would have to defeat NCAA champion Bobby Pearce. Entering the dual before an overflow crowd, the Aggies were considered unbeatable in three weights, including 126. The home team got things started with a pin at 118. For the Sooners to win, White could not allow Pearce a pin, for which he was famous. After 10 minutes (back then matches were 10 minutes in duration), the match ended even and two three-minute overtimes periods were wrestled. Each rode the other during the extra periods. After 16 exhausting minutes, the match ended in a draw. After White s match, OU won four of the final six to hand A&M its first defeat in more than a decade. White s courageous draw had enabled the Sooners to pull the upset.
