Syllabus 2017 ASM International Teachers Materials Camp: Houghton, MI The ASM International Teachers Materials camp is an intensive, week-long course intended to introduce (primarily) middle and high school teachers to the discipline of Materials Science and Engineering. Course Dates: Monday, June 19 thorough Friday, June 23, 2017 Instructors: Primary faculty are two experienced high school Master Teachers who are trained by ASM international to teach at ASM camps across the United States. The master teachers will be assisted by Daniel Seguin Research Engineer at Michigan Technological University, and an Undergraduate Materials Science and Engineering student at Michigan Technological University. Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to introduce teachers to the major areas of materials science and engineering (metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites). Teachers will participate in inexpensive, exciting experiments that illustrate the science that explains why different materials have different properties, and how scientists and engineers can control the properties of a material. After attending this camp, teachers will understand the importance of materials engineering in exciting technological advances as well as in everyday life. By means of the experiments they learn at the camp and take back to their classrooms, teachers will effectively be able to instruct and excite their students in the fields of science and engineering by integrating the activities learned at the camp into their everyday lesson plans. Attendance: Teacher participants are required to attend and participate all sessions that are held between 8:00 am Monday, June 19 though Friday, June 23 at 12:15 pm (34 hours) total. If necessary, participants may choose to stay until 3:00 Friday, June 23 to finish projects. For successful completion of the course, all projects must be completed by Friday, June 23 at 3:00 pm. Attendance will be tracked by participants receiving an adhesive star to attach to their nametag at the beginning of each session. The department liaison will be responsible for giving the stars to the participants. Only participants who have earned 9 stars (Morning sessions Monday through Friday, and afternoon sessions Monday-Thursday) will be given full credit for course participation.

Assignments: Teachers are required to participate in all activities scheduled in the Camp. Graduate or continuing Education Credits: Upon successful completion of the requirements of the camp, teacher participants will be awarded, at no cost, 4 CEU credits by ASM International. Teacher participants who desire graduate credit must arrange for graduate credit through the University of Missouri-Kansas City at their own expense (in 2012, the cost to teacher participants was $250). Information on this process can be found on the ASM International web site at: http://www.asminternational.org/portal/site/www/foundation/educators/devel opment/ Teacher participants who desire State of Michigan Clock Hours Certification (formerly SBCEUs) will be responsible for arranging credits and must do so at their own expense. There is a state $25 filing fee for the application, and there will be a $25 fee payable to Michigan Tech s Department of Cognitive & Learning Sciences. Upon payment of the fee, participants will be given access to the web site from the State of Michigan to complete the certification process. Accommodations and Meals: Teacher participants will be housed in Super 8 Hotel in Houghton, MI. Participants will have double occupancy, to be assigned arbitrarily by gender. Participants may choose private occupancy and pay the difference between private and double occupancy (price TBD). Breakfast, morning and afternoon snacks, and lunch will be provided for all participants. Participants will be responsible for transportation to and from the Camp, and will also be responsible for their evening meal during the Camp. Contacts: The Michigan Tech campus contacts are Daniel Seguin, Research Engineer (djseguin@mtu.edu@mtu.edu, 906-497-3375) and Stephen Kampe, MSE Department Chair (kampe@mtu.edu, 906-487-2036). ASM International contact is Jeane Deatherage (jeane.deatherage@asminternational.org)
