Daily Preparation and Written Work School Nurse (use these guidelines for all written paperwork during the school nurse visit) I. Prior to Clinical Chapter 15: Health Promotion of School Age Child and Family Chapter 16: Health Promotion of the Adolescent and Family Chapter 17: Health Problems of the School Age Child and Adolescent II. Written Work 1. First Page a. Overall impression b. Legal and ethical concern c. Mandatory reporting requirement 2. Second Page (Equipment, Communication & Medication) a. Equipment: Name 5 types of durable medical equipment used by the school nurse b. Medications: List any medications administered or discussed during the school clinic visit. Comment on the context in which the medication was discussed during the visit to include any conclusion about its use. When applicable, include the specific dosage for that client and if the dose is consistent with recommended dosages. c. Communication: observe the communication utilized by the nurse and adolescents or pre adolescents in the school setting. Give specific examples. 3. Third Page (Health Issues and Safety) a. Name 10 health issues and interventions seen on a regular basis by school nurses. Include health issues seen during the school day. b. Safety and Injury Prevention: Students will compare the actual facility with the textbook description of safety and injury prevention required for the various age groups encountered there. Include any deficits at the facility that may negatively affect children s health/safety. 4. Nursing Process Complete the abbreviated nursing process forms included in the packet, for two different clients. 5. Growth and Development Compare the textbook description of growth and development with the assessment of one specific child in the facility and/or clinic to include: physical, intellectual, emotional-social, and sexual-moral development depending on the age.
