The KNUST-School of Public Health exists to promote student centered learning, to empower the student to ar culate the role of public health in disease preven on and health promo on locally and globally. Through the collabora ve effort with the Department of Health Care Management at the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), which is also the WHO Collabora ng Centre for Health Systems Research and Management under the leadership of Prof. Reinhard Busse, the KNUST-School of Public Health has introduced a new interna onal research-oriented Master of Public Health / Master of Philosophy programme with a focus on Health Systems Research and Management training for professionals, especially from African and other developing countries interested in health care systems and health policy development. As the leading science and technology university in Ghana, the KNUST campus presents a panorama of beau ful and modern buildings interspersed with verdant lawns and tropical flora, which provide a cool and refreshing atmosphere congenial to academic studies and research. About the Programme The MPH/MPhil Health Systems Research and Management (HSRM) programme is a dedicated effort to train individuals, develop exper se and strengthen ins tu onal capacity in health systems research and management. The courses and contents are developed using interdisciplinary approaches, theories and prac ces, and reflect health systems and policy developments from na onal, regional and interna onal perspec ves. The programme is purposefully designed and oriented towards the needs of students from especially Africa and also those who intend to work in the African region. It aims at training health managers, prac oners, researchers and other public health professionals of diverse disciplines and backgrounds at various levels of governmental, quasi-governmental, non-governmental, public, and private as well as interna onal organiza ons and in different se ngs, who would be responsible for assuring the quality of care and provision of services, improving capacity of providers, developing efficient payment mechanisms, priori zing resources to the poor, improving informa on systems, and strengthening health system governance. At the end of this training programme, students will be able to: understand and u lize the techniques required in researching and evalua ng health systems for strategic planning, management and leadership. apply various concepts, methods and strategies of organizing, financing, regula ng and delivering healthcare services. analyse the role of the main actors in different health systems as well as ins tu onal frameworks, processes, and contents of health care policies. assess and iden fy innova ve ways of improving the performance of na onal health care systems towards the a ainment of universal health coverage. The programme is a partnership between the KNUST-School of Public Health and the TU Berlin s Department of Health Care Management, with funding support by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) from the budget of the Federal Ministry of Economic Coopera on and Development (BMZ) as part of the DAAD-PAGEL programme. Programme Structure The language of instruc on is English. The programme is a full- me study for a residen al period of two years or four semesters at the KNUST. The Table below provides an overview of the structure of the MPH/MPhil HSRM programme. KNUST-School of Public Health will teach on a regular weekly schedule (in blue in the Table above). The TU Berlin s Department of Health Care Management will organize three (3) block/short courses in Semester I and three (3) block/short courses in Semester II. Year 2: Focuses on individual student research project ac vi es with close supervision and mentoring. It consists of prac cal project work in subject-related ins tu ons in Ghana and/or abroad, leading to the wri ng of a master s thesis (or its equivalent academic research paper). At least three selected students will be funded to embark on a three-month study visit to Germany for similar project work ac vi es and exchanges hosted by the TU Berlin partner each year. Brief Descrip on of Courses COH 711, 712: Epidemiology and Management Informa on Systems I & II This course aims at providing the quan ta ve base for public health policy. The main focus of epidemiology is the distribu on, frequency and determinants of health problems and disease in popula ons. It also provides an introduc on to methods, and considers the phenomenon under study in the context of the epidemiological transac on, a profound change in disease and demographic pa erns with consequences for health policy and planning. COH 720: Health Economics An introduc on to basic concepts in economics and finance, and their applica on to the health sector will be discussed. The focus will be on demand and supply for health care, sources of financing health care and methods of economic evalua on in health cost-effec veness and cost-benefit analyses. COH 721: Human Resource for Health Human resource for health (HRH) is important for the smooth delivery of health services. This course is intended to equip students with basic human resource principles needed for effec ve management of health staff. It focuses on the processes and procedures for obtaining the requisite staff, nurturing, developing and retaining them to give their maximum effort to achieve the goals of the health sector. COH 723, 724: Health Systems Research Methods I & II This course aims at introducing the student to the mul disciplinary approach to research in health enabling par cipants to acquire skills of designing and conduc ng research in health and health-related issues. It also offers an opportunity for students to enhance their exper se in research by applying appropriate research methods to issues under study. Rou ne data collec on, ability to analyse health data with appropriate sta s cal techniques and report wri ng will be stressed. Seminars will be organized on a variety of topics which will include student contribu- ons as well as lectures by senior health personnel and academic staff from outside the main teaching staff. Visits to areas of public health interest and health administra on will be organized throughout the course. 5

Interac ve class session COH 725: Principles of Management This course seeks to create awareness in students about management and leadership quali es, how to mo vate employees for superior performance and how to improve organiza onal performance. The historical development and origin of management percepts and concepts, management theories and their applica on to health-related problems are thoroughly discussed. The course prepares health managers and situates health structure in the general management levels; strategic, tac cal and opera onal. The contemporary dynamics in management and their relevance to the realiza on of health goals such as Sustainable Development Goals are also elaborated. COH 737, 738: Biosta s cs I & II This course aims at enabling the students acquire the skills of collec ng, analysing, interpre ng and repor ng data on health and health-related issues. Prac cal problems rela ng to the use of rou ne data sources would be discussed. The link between sta s cs and health management informa on systems would be stressed. Limita ons to qualita ve data analysis in health would be examined. Laboratory exercises would be used to ensure competency in the use of sta s cal so ware such as STATA, SPSS, EPI Info, Excel, Minitab, SAS and Nvivo. COH 864: Leadership for Health Systems Transforma on The focus of this course is Strategic Leadership Principles and Prac ce. It is designed to help the students build and strengthen their skills to become more effec ve in their leadership roles in the Ghana Health Systems to facilitate the needed transforma on. The course adopts a seminar approach that builds on each student s past knowledge and experience, and takes advantage of the individual s high mo va on to accomplish the learning tasks. 6

HSRM 551: Health Care Systems - Goals, Func ons, Actors Health care systems are complex and usually not well understood. The aim of the course is to enable students to systema cally understand, analyse and evaluate heath systems in different countries of the world. The course will introduce the main frameworks, concepts, and ideas of interna onal health systems research to lay the theore cal founda ons for students to work in this field. In addi on, it will use the theore cal concepts to illustrate and analyse the func oning of health systems in different regions of the world. HSRM 553: Health Systems Financing Health systems financing is the central health system building block that determines countries ability to achieve universal health coverage. It has a par cularly strong influence on overall health system performance. The aim of the course is to introduce the main concepts and op ons for health systems financing with a focus on achieving universal coverage and financial risk-protec on. The course will enable students to discuss different op ons of health system financing reforms and to analyse their benefits and disadvantages. HSRM 555, 556: The Ghana Health System: ins tu ons, processes, policies I & II This course aims to provide a clear understanding of the profile and structure of the health care delivery system of Ghana, analyse its key components and evaluate the performance. It will provide students with insight into the historical developments and evolu on of the Ghana health system. The course takes an interac ve approach and emphasizes an exchange of knowledge and cri cal discussions through oral presenta ons, and wri en evalua ons as well as comparisons of the Ghana health system both in part and as a whole with other health care systems. HSRM 558: Health Care Industry (with Seminar on Medical Devices) The course focuses on industrial providers in health care (pharmaceu cal industry, medical technology industry). A er comple ng this course, students have gained an in-depth knowledge on framework condi ons, contents and tasks of healthcare management with regard to pharmaceu cal and medical technology industry. The acquired knowledge and skills allow students to assess challenges in the context of management issues as well as to analyse and solve problems in the management of pharmaceu cal and medical technology industries and their products. Furthermore, skills of scien fic work are further refined. 7

HSRM 562: Innova ons in Chronic Disease Care and ehealth The course comprises three emerging public health fields integrated care, ehealth and chronic diseases. The first part of the course will provide insight into the rise of chronic diseases and the challenge it cons tutes in health and social care organisa on. The various defini ons and concepts of integrated care and digital health will be introduced. A framework for integrated care for persons with chronic diseases will be introduced to understand key factors such as leadership & governance, financing and the role of informa on and communica on technologies for implemen ng integrated care. The course focuses on explaining the need for more integrated systems of care delivery and the opportunity provided by ICT applica ons, as they can play an important role in making integrated care becoming a reality. The course will promote crea vity, entrepreneurship and the establishment of innova ve pa ent centred solu ons for an effec ve implementa on of ehealth and mhealth interven ons in integrated care. HSRM 564: Health Technology Assessment Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is being increasingly employed to enable evidence-based coverage decisions in most high- and middle-income countries. It is a tool that allows a cri cal evalua on of (new) health technologies, poten ally contribu ng to their appropriate use, good value for money of investments and overall efficiency in the health system. This course will focus on various dimensions of HTA process and methodology and explore their applicability in emerging se ngs, such as African countries. Students will understand the role of HTA in health care systems and familiarise themselves with the methods underpinning HTA report produc on. Course par cipants in a group discussion and problem-solving exercise Mandatory Project Work and Thesis A er comple on of the study courses, students have to undertake individual research project ac vi es with close supervision and mentoring. For each cohort, at least three selected students will have the opportunity to embark on a three-months study visit to Germany for similar project work ac vi es and exchanges hosted by the TU Berlin partner. For the comple on of the master s programme and in par al fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the MPH/MPhil degree, students are required to submit a thesis or its equivalent based on an independent scien fic research project in a topic relevant to the course of health systems and policy developments, especially in Africa. Mode of Applica on Entry requirements To qualify to read the MPH/MPhil Health Systems Research and Management programme, the applicant should: have a good first degree (at least 2nd class lower), e.g. a BSc, BA, MD, preferably in any public health related field from a recognized University that offers degrees in programmes such as: Sta s cs/biosta s cs; biology; medicine or other health related sciences; poli cal science or economics; sociology or related social sciences. have at least two years post-gradua on work/job experience. Relevant interna onal work experience is an advantage and applica ons by interna onal students are also encouraged. Interested applicants with less than two years working experience but with other relevant background are encouraged to apply. have a proof of English language proficiency for admission to a research or higher degree programme, if the applicant s first language is not English and/or does not qualify for exemp on from the required English language test (e.g. TOEFL or IELTS). Graduates of schools of public health Graduates of other post-graduate public health programmes who may be interested in pursuing the MPH/MPhil Health Systems Research and Management programme may be considered for admission, with exemp on from the common courses already registered and passed, but shall be required to complete a project and research work related to this current programme in addi on to the other mandatory core courses. The final selec on for admission will be done on the basis of a wri en examina on followed by an interview (in person or online). 11

Applica on Procedure and Deadline The programme starts in September every year. Applica ons open from the beginning of February un l end of April. Ghanaian applicants must purchase an evoucher by paying an applica on fee at the following banks: GCB, Ecobank or UniBank. The evoucher contains an applica on number and PIN that will grant access to the online admissions portal (h ps://apps.knust.edu.gh/ admissions) to begin the applica on process. Interna onal applicants DO NOT need an evoucher and must apply directly in the online admissions portal.
