JOB DSCRIPTION JOB TITL: ACCOUNTABL TO: PROFSSIONAL ACCOUNTABILTY: BAND Divisional Head of Nursing Divisional General Manager Director of Nursing & Quality 8B This role is defined as regulated activity as set out in Schedule 4 of the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006, as amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. JOB PURPOS The Divisional Head of Nursing will report to the Divisional General Manager and will have professional accountability to the Director of Nursing & Quality. They will be accountable for the professional nurse leadership and standards of nursing practice throughout the Division. The Divisional Head of Nursing will, in partnership with the Divisional Associate Medical Director and Divisional General Manager, jointly develop service strategies, ensure delivery of targets and foster positive partnerships across the Divisional structure and with external agencies/nhs organisations. Leadership of the Trust 1. To promote a common vision and ownership of the Trust s values and strategic objectives, advising on the Divisional implications of strategic and operational policy decisions. 2. To lead nursing staff in developing appropriate changes in practice within the Division in line with Trust strategy. 3. The Divisional General Manager, along with the Director of Nursing & Quality will agree personal objectives with the Divisional Head of Nursing on an annual basis. This will form part of the annual review of his/her performance in the role. The Divisional Head of Nursing will set objectives for the Matrons and other senior nursing members of the Division, monitoring performance through an effective performance management process. Corporate Responsibility 4. Contribute to the development, communication and promotion of corporate core purpose, vision, mission and values. 5. Contribute to the development of a culture of continuous improvement within MCHFT in order to meet stretching financial and performance targets. 6. Champion MCHFT, the services it provides and its support for other frontline health services. 7. To provide ongoing support to the Trust in maintaining Foundation Trust status. 8. To ensure that the requirements of the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act are met, in particular the responsibility of Registered Practitioners, to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care. 9. To ensure that the NMC Code of Conduct standards and management of nursing practice and revalidation are disseminated and implanted throughout the Division. Divisional Head of Nursing 2016 1
10. To work with the Divisional Senior Management Team to ensure that nursing practice remains patient focused, evidence-based and cost effective. 11. To interpret and implement the Government s strategy on nursing, midwifery and health visiting, Making a Difference, securing positive outcomes for the Trust in the context of its business plan and strategic direction. 12. Participate in the Senior Manager on-call rota. 13. To undertake specific tasks asked from time to time by the Divisional General Manager or Director of Nursing & Quality. Patient Responsibilities 14. To take Divisional responsibility for bed management and coordination. 15. To take Divisional responsibility for patient consultation and involvement in service planning 16. To lead the development and implementation of Care Pathways between the specialties provided in the Division and Primary Care. 17. To take Divisional responsibility for complaints and litigation management. 18. To take the lead for the Division on Controls Assurance and Risk Management. Human Resources Responsibilities 19. To ensure that clinical supervision is in place, and that the process is monitored and developed further within the remit of Clinical Governance. 20. To ensure that the Division contributes effectively to the operational and strategic management of pre and post registration programmes, so that newly Qualified Nurses are fit for purpose and fit for practice. 21. To have the first-line management responsibility for the following group of staff: Nurse Practitioners, Matrons and Ward Managers. 22. To contribute to the delivery of strategic workforce objectives such as workforce planning, organisational change, reductions in pay spend and training requirements, in conjunction with the Human Resources Manager and Divisional Workforce Committee. Financial Responsibilities 23. To support the Divisional General Manager in the management of the Divisional budget to meet the Trust s strategic and operational business plans. The Divisional Head of Nursing has responsibility to improve and sustain relationships with key stakeholders and build a positive image of the Trust through responsive internal and external communications.
