BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDUP Kendric Mapled secured an individual title for the Sooners at 141 pounds as the University of Oklahoma wrestling team finished third with 58 points at the Big 12 Championships inside Oklahoma State s Gallagher-Iba Arena on Saturday night. Oklahoma finished third behind champion Oklahoma State (118.5) and runner-up Iowa State (74). West Virginia rounded out the field with 28 points for fourth. Maple defended his Big 12 Championship crown from a year ago with a dominant performance at 141 pounds after he topped Iowa State s Luke Goettl with a 13-3 major decision to remain undefeated on the year with a 26-0 overall record. Three other Sooners competed in championship bouts at Gallagher-Iba Arena, with runner-up finishes by redshirt freshman Cody Brewer, redshirt junior Matt Lester and redshirt senior Bubby Graham. Brewer made his first Big 12 Wrestling Championship appearance at 133 pounds against Oklahoma State s Jon Morrison, but took the runner-up spot with a dropped 6-2 decision against Morrision. At 157 pounds, Matt Lester suffered an 11-3 major decision to Oklahoma State s Alex Dieringer. Graham concluded championship action for the Sooners in Stillwater at 165 pounds in one of the most anticipated matches of the night when he battled against Oklahoma State s Tyler Caldwell for the 2013 Big 12 Title. It wasn t a flashy show for either wrestler, as Caldwell secured just one point in the second period to take the victory. Neither Graham nor Caldwell added any points on the board, as the lone point would be all it took for Caldwell to claim the title with a 1-0 decision. SOONERS EARN ACADEMIC RECOGNITION Four University of Oklahoma student-athletes were named to the 2013 Academic All- Big 12 Wrestling Team for the 2012-13 season. The group was highlighted by senior Patrick Graham and junior All-American Kendic Maple, who are the lone wrestlers in the conference with 4.00 GPAs. Graham and Maple are joined by senior Dillon Dennis on the All-Academic first team, while junior Nolan McBryde earned second team honors. A total of 10 Big 12 student-athletes earned first team recognition, while eight individuals made up the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. Oklahoma s three first team selections were second in the Big 12 behind West Virginia with four representatives on the first team to lead the conference. Additionally, Maples is one of three wrestlers on the list to become a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree, as the junior also earned second team recognition last season. Maple, a health and exercise Science major, enters the postseason as the nation s leading 141 pounder. The junior from Wichita, Kan., owns a 24-0, undefeated record on the season heading into the Big 12 Championships this weekend. Graham, who will graduate this May with a degree in Latin American studies, is ranked fifth in the nation among 165-pounders. Graham is in his second year at OU after he transferred from American when Sooner head coach Mark Cody made the move to Oklahoma for his inaugural 2011-12 season. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. BUBBY GRAHAM NAMED BIG 12 WRESTLER OF THE WEEK Oklahoma senior Bubby Graham was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week after he claimed two victories with duals against No. 14 Lehigh and No. 9 Virginia Tech. The announcement marks the first career honor for Graham since he came to Oklahoma a year ago. Although the Sooners dropped both matches, Graham improved his season record to 18-2 and dual record to 10-2. Graham began the weekend with an 11-3 major decision over Lehigh s Ben Haas for his fifth major decision of the season, and then wrestled up a weight class on Sunday to beat Virginia Tech s 174-pounder Austin Gabel in a 3-2 decision. His win over Gabel was the 10th-straight victory for Graham since losing to Oklahoma State s No. 3 165-pounder Tyler Caldwell in December. Additionally, it marked the 40th dual victory of his four-year wrestling career. SOONERS DROP TWO IN TOP-25 WEEKEND SHOWDOWN In a tough weekend that saw OU face No. 14 and No. 9 Virginia Tech in a span of three days, the Sooners dropped to 6-6 on the year with two losses on the weekend. Four wrestlers escaped with wins in each match as Cody Brewer, Kendric Maple and Bubby Graham each grabbed wins against the Mountain Hawks and Hokies. Matt Lester secured a victory against Lehigh, while Keldrick Hall added a win, and totaled the second fall of his senior year in OU s dual against Virginia Tech. SENIORS FINISH HOME SLATE IN STYLE, OU TOPS WVU The University of Oklahoma wrestling team sent five seniors out in style as Oklahoma topped new Big 12 opponent West Virginia, 25-14, in its final home match of the 2012-13 season in front of 679 fans at McCasland Field House. The Sooners bid adieu to Scott Chene, Dillon Dennis, Bubby Graham, Keldrick Hall and Nolan McBryde as OU claimed six of the ten matches against WVU. The Sooners won the match off of two technical falls, courtesty of Nick Lester (149) and Justin DeAngelis (157); three major decisions from Cody Brewer (133), Kendric Male (141) and Bubby Graham (165) and just one decision on the afternoon from heavyweight Kendric Maple. UNI PANTHERS CLAW PAST SOONERS IN FINAL SECONDS It appeared to be a clear start for the Sooners who grabbed the first four victories of the night from Kyle Garcia (125), Cody Brewer (133), Kendric Maple (141) and Nick Lester (147). Matt Lester fumbled in a four overtime challenge, that put UNI on the board with three points and cut into the OU lead. Bubby Graham picked up the final OU win with a three-point decision to total OU s 15 points. In the heavier weights, UNI caught ground topping a group of OU youngsters late in the night. After Brad Johnson s matchup against Blaize Cabell, UNI tied it up 15-15 all with just one match remaining on the night - the heavyweight contest with OU s Keldrick Hall and UNI s Blayne Beale. After a scoreless first period, Hall was on the board first with a successful escape at the start of the second period. The senior heavyweight was able to hold off his opponent, Blayne Beale, until the third period. Beale totaled one escape and a takedown in the final two minutes of the match to take the individual win with a 3-1 decision and claim the Panther victory. MAPLE SECURES THIRD CONFERENCE HONOR OF THE SEASON Kendric Maple was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 7 to earn his third conference honor of the 2012-13 season. With the recognition, Maple has secured three conference honors in a single season for the second-straight year after he was named the Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 2 and Jan. 30 of the 2011-12 season and selected the Wrestler of the Month for November of 2011. The honor - the sixth of Maple s career, comes after a two-week break from the holidays when the Wichita, Kan., native returned to the mat with a stellar performance at the 2012 Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. The redshirt junior went undefeated at the prestigious event with a 6-0 record on the weekend and the 141-pound title. En route to claiming his second Midlands title in as many years, Maple topped two top-five opponents in No. 4 Mitchell Port (Edinboro) with a 14-11 decision and No. 3 BJ Futrell (Illinois) with a 5-1 decision. After his performance in Illinois, Maple returned to Norman for OU s first dual of 2013 and claimed a 12-0 major decision over Iowa State s Luke Goettl, ranked 14th out of all 141-pounders in the nation. His performance helped lead OU to its fifth dual victory of the season and sparked a four-match win streak against the Cyclones on the evening. 50TH ANUAL KEN KRAFT MIDLANDS CHAMPIONSHIPS Oklahoma finished third at the 50th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships behind firstplace finisher Illinois and runnerup Virginia Tech. OU was one of just two schools that crowned two individual champions along with Virginia Tech, after Kendric Maple and Bubby Graham took home the 141 and 165 pound titles, respectively. Top-ranked 141-pounder Kendric Maple continued his undefeated 2012 campaign with a 5-1 decision over B.J. Futrell from the University of Illinois. The victory also marked Maple s second-straight Midlands victory, following a championship title in 2011. The championship bout was the second time that the pair has met on the mat this season, and the second time that Maple claimed a win after he took home a 6-2 decision over Futrell at the NWCA All-Star Classic in November. OU s second individual championship of the night came from Bubby Graham in the 165-pound bracket. Before his final bout Graham upset Virginia Tech s No. 2 seed Pete Yates in the semifinals and was set to face the top-seeded Bekzod Abdurakhmanov of Clarion in the final before he was forced to take an injury forfeit to Graham. The Sooners also gained points from Nick Lester, who finished fifth in the 149-pound bracket, and twin brother Matt Lester, who finished seventh in the 157-pound bracket.

WRESTLER OF THE WEEK Kendric Maple secured his second-straight conference honor when he was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 11 for his performance in Oklahoma s back-to-back duals against No. 20 Wyoming and No. 2 Oklahoma State. Although the Sooners dropped both matches, Maple remained undefeated in the 2012-13 season earning his ninth and tenth wins, respectively, each of which were totaled by fall. Maple kick-started the weekend after he pinned Wyoming s McCade Ford in 1:29 on Friday night, and followed his performance pinning Oklahoma State s Julian Feikert in 5:57 on Sunday afternoon. His performances marked the fourth and fifth pins of the season- and continued a teamhigh 10-match win streak for OU s redshirt junior. BEDLAM DEBUT Although the outcome isn t what he wanted, freshman Kyle Garcia made quite an impression in his first Bedlam Battle. The only newcomer to hail from Oklahoma - Garcia captured his first victory in the annual showdown with a 3-2 decision over Cowboy s Eddie Klimara in the 125-pound bout. With the experience under his belt, Garcia explained that, I think there was a little bit of an advantage that I had over the other freshman on our squad - and it s that I m from Oklahoma and I ve grown up watching this dual for the last 20 years of my life. I feel like I ve always been here watching it. It s something that sits in your stomach or in the bottom of your heart that you want to go out there and compete your best in this dual and get the victory for your color and your half of the state. YOUNG SOONERS The University of Oklahoma Wrestling team boasts 10 true freshmen and a pair of redshirt freshmen. Out of that group, four true freshmen have consistently started for the Crimson and Cream in the beginning weeks of their rookie campaign - Kyle Garcia (125), Matt Reed (174), Greg Wilson (184) and Brad Johnson (197). Redshirt freshman Cody Brewer has made an impression in the 133-pounders, while fellow underclassmen Dalton Dennis (141) has seen time on the matt in dual competition for the Sooners. WICHITA HEIGHTS Redshirt junior Kendric Maple and true freshman Matt Reed have seen eachother - before they both found their way to Oklahoma. Both Reed and Maple are graduates of Wichita Heights High School - and have each managed to find their way to the Sooners. Maple, the nation s top 141-pounder has started the year off strong with an 8-0 record, while Reed has made an impression on the mat with a 9-3 overall and 4-1 record in dual competition. MAPLE NAMED BIG 12 WRESTLER OF THE MONTH Kendric Maple received the fourth Big 12 honor of his career on Dec. 5 when he was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Month at the conclusion of November for the second-straight year. He made it through the first month undefeated with an 8-0 overall and 4-0 dual record after opening his dual slate at the Journeymen/Asics Northeastern Duals with a 3-0 slate with a 7-3 decision over No. 8 141-pounder Luke Vath of Hofstra, a 13-1 major decision over Cornell s Mike Nevinger and a 1:33 pin over Central Michigan s Matt Lavingly. The redshirt junior led OU to its 14th-straight Brockport/Oklahoma Invitaitonal when he took the 141 title with three straight wins, including a 0:13 pin over Aemrican s Matt Dorf - the fastest of the Invitational - en route to being named Most Outstanding Wrestler. Maple opened the 2012 season at the NWCA All-Star Classic where he topped pre-season No. 5 141-pounder B.J. Futrell from Illinois with a 6-3 decision. OKLAHOMA CLAIMS 14TH STRAIGHT The Sooners captured their 14th consecutive Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational Title after they totaled 155.5 points at the annual event held in Brockport, N.Y. For the second consecutive year, Oklahoma s Kendric Maple was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Invitational after he claimed the 141-pound title with a 1:17 fall over Buffalo s Andrew Schutt. The redshirt junior also notched the fastest pin of the night when he took down Matt Dorf of American in 00:13 in the first round of competition. Maple was joined by four other Sooners who earned wins in New York in Cody Brewer (133), Nick Lester (149), Matt Lester (157) and Bubby Graham (165). OKLAHOM ALL-STARS SHINE AT NWCA ALL-STAR CLASSIC Redshirt junior Kendric Maple shined with his first invitation to the NWCA All-Star Classic after he walked off the mat with a 6-3 decision over No. 5 141-pounder B.J. Futrell of Illinois - a two-time All-American and fourth-place finisher at the 2012 NCAA Championships. For his efforts, Maple was named the Classic s Most Outstanding Wrestler alongside Cornell s Kyle Dake. Their prize? A full-size gladiator helmet. Nick Lester also represented Oklahoma at the presitgous meet. He left D.C., with a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the nation s No. 2 149-pounder CJason Chamberlain of Boise State. NWCA ALL-STAR CLASSIC Oklahoma sent a pair of wrestlers, Nick Lester and Kendric Maple were selected to participate at the 2012 NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the United States Marine Corps on saturday, Nov. 3 at American University in Washington, D.C. Since the NWCA All-Star Classic began 45 years ago in 1967, Oklahoma has sent 39 total wrestlers to date - many more than once. Both Lester and Maple marked the 40th and 41st Sooners invited to the event, respectively. For the third straight year an Oklahoma wrestler has been invited to the event (2012), the third longest streak in program history. For four straight years from 1970-73, a Sooner wrestler had been present at the Classic, while most recently, the Crimson and Cream had sent wrestlers for six straight years from 2002-07.

Keen led the wrestling program to the NCAA title in 1936. It was the first chapter in what has become one of the nation s most storied programs. Six more championships have followed, including three under Port Robertson (1951, 52 and 57), two under Tommy Evans (1960 and 63), and the latest under Stan Abel in 1974. Since then, Oklahoma has finished among the top 10 at the national tournament 27 times, including four runner-up finishes. It s only a matter of time before the Sooners add even more hardware to the trophy case. YEAR COACH OVERALL RECORD 1936 Paul V. Entering his second season as Oklahoma s head coach, Cody came to Norman from Washington, D.C., where he led American University from 2002-2011 in his first role as a collegiate head coach. While at American, Cody produced 21 Academic All Americans, 14 All-Americans and one individual NCAA Champion. It s a remarkable feat considering what he stepped into with the job. He took over the program just after it had been dropped and then resurrected. Just 4.5 scholarships were available for seven wrestlers. Finally, in 2005, the Eagles broke through with their first national qualifiers. It went on to post top 25 team finishes in the NCAA Tournament from 2006-2011. In 2008, American added wrestling as only its third fully-funded sport. For his efforts, Cody was named the 2011 NWCA National Wrestling Coach of the Year. In his first season at OU, Cody led the Sooners to a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, a 13-5 record and produced two All-Americans and three Academic All-Americans.
