VFW Messenger Queensbury Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6196 and Auxiliary QVFWP6196.org Commander s Message Hello Brothers and Sisters: Volume 25. Issue 3 September 2018 Gary Kaiser, Commander Kelly Sweet, Editor Loyalty, Honor, Service August flew by with wet hot days here and dry hot weather around the nation. It s time to prepare for the end of the year events so get your calendars ready! September 21-23 we will be at the Adirondack Balloon Festival. Dan Saville and the Masonic Lodge have again invited us to set up a tent at their food truck site. September 29 th is the Stop 22 Suicide Awareness Walk at the Aviation Mall. Set up and registration is at 8am. The walk will be at 10am. Humana will be there to provide water and bags and is also partnering with the State Commander Gene Ratigliano to bring more awareness to the high number of veterans and active duty personnel that commit suicide. Volunteers will be needed at both these functions, mostly to man the tables, talk with people about the good things the VFW does for our veterans and local community. If you like to walk please join us on Saturday Sept 29 th to walk for those that cannot. We had a great time at our Annual picnic. Thank you to Tim McNulty, Dan Saville and Rebecca Sweet for planning a great day. All enjoyed the chicken, clams and array of salads and dishes by our members. We surprised several members with Certificates of Appreciation, given for their years of service: Dexter Campbell, Bertum (Bert) Harvey, William (Bill) McGarr and Forest (Robbie) Robinson For their long-time support from the Auxiliary we also presented certificates to: Lillian Wood and Lillian Finney. Thank you all for your service to country and post. Again, we are collecting bottles for our State Commanders project: Saratoga War Horses. This is a therapeutic program for Veterans with horses in Saratoga Springs. The bottles help to purchase feed and medical needs for the therapy horses. Thank you for all the bottle for the past projects. KEEP THEM COMING. Contact me for pickup or leave at post in the entry way. THIS IS NOT MY POST!! It belongs to all our members, VFW and Auxiliary. Please help us for a few hours on Tuesday night BINGO to keep it going. We do so much for our community and Vets that we need to see another 50 years. \ If you need a Ride to the post for our Monday night meeting please call. Someone can make arrangement to pick you up and get you home. We would truely enjoy your input and company. Did you know friend or family members are welcome at the post as well! Let them have some fun, talk old times and ask them to join. Purchase a member ship for an active duty family member or friend. They can visit and make friend at any VFW around the world. God Bless our Troops. Commander Gary Kaiser

Dear Comrades & Sisters- Auxiliary President s Message The Love for Our Veterans is More Precious than Gold Summer is almost over! Even though it doesn t feel like it, kids are going back to school. Our meeting in August was very productive and we have a lot of great projects and goals that we are working on this coming year. From what I saw, we had a great turn out at the Post Picnic, I couldn t stay long because I wasn t feeling very well. I m getting a great response for the STOP 22 Walk-a Thon, and have been walking 22 minutes for every $1 that is donated towards that project. A lot of exciting and happening things going on. Our hard work is showing and I couldn t be any prouder or happier to belong to an amazing organization. I m also getting a jump start on our Vendor Sale on November 10, 2018. So, if you know an interested vendor, please let me know as soon as possible. I don t want to overbook and I want a variety of different vendors. New year means DUES are due!!!! Dues are $20 to those under 70 and those over 70 are $15. We are asking our annual members to send in their dues as soon as practical. Dues can be sent to Terry McGarr 56 3rd Street, Glens Falls, N.Y. 12801. We have started this new year with a bang and completing and starting many projects! Check out our Facebook page for information! Our meetings are on there, fundraisers, Bingo Dinner Specials, Scholarships, etc etc. It is chock full of information. We are showing the community what we do and breaking the perception that we are just a canteen or social club. Our next meeting will be September 17, 2018 at 6:00PM Come on in for a bite to eat and a drink with old friends. We are also going to start doing 50/50 raffles at our meeting and all proceeds will go towards the Veterans Emergency Fund. Please keep those serving abroad in your prayers and bring them all home to us. God Bless our Troops and God Bless America! Loyally yours, Kelli Anne Kennedy, President kelliannekennedy@hotmail.com

Explore VA education and training benefits. VA education benefits may be used toward traditional degrees, non-college degrees, certifications, test fees and more. And, with the Colmery Act (also known as the Forever GI Bill), eligible Veterans have more time to finish their education. The legislation eliminates the 15-year time limit for those who left active duty on or after January 1, 2013. It also restores benefits for Veterans who lost them due to a school closure or disapproval, and more. Learn about all VA benefits and how to apply by visiting Explore.VA.gov The 2019 COLA is looking like the biggest increase in 7 years The 2019 Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) is heading towards a 3% increase based on July s inflation data. Explore VA Health Care Finding the best long-term care approach can be a challenge. VA health care offers sick and disabled Veterans options regarding the setting of their care and the types of care they receive. When Ken, an Air Force Veteran, had a stroke, he suddenly became dependent on his wife. VA was there to help. When people told us it was time to put him in a nursing home we just weren t ready for that, says Maria, Ken s wife and caregiver. We got in the program and they made it so very easy for us. Long-term care services include: Nursing and medical care Physical therapy Help with daily tasks, like bathing, dressing and making meals Comfort care and help with managing pain Support for caregivers This care is available in many different settings, including nursing homes, adult day homes, and assisted living centers. Programs like Home Based Primary Care and Veterans-Directed Care give Veterans the care that they need at home, so they can continue to live independently. To access these services, Veterans must be enrolled in VA health care and VA must determine a specific service is necessary. Visit Explore.VA.gov to learn about all VA benefits and how to apply.
