The Civil War Round Table of DC Monthly Newsletter October 2013, Volume 63 Number 2 this issue Dinner Information P.2 Oct Speaker Information P.2 Upcoming Events P.3 Membership Application P.4 Dinner Reservations Form P.5 2013-2014 Board and Officers Welcome to the 2013-2014 program year for the Civil War Roundtable of the District of Columbia Introduction to Civil War Intelligence This presentation, detailing the role that intelligence played in the War Between the States, has two objectives. First, to provide a brief history of how the two sides used intelligence at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels and the strengths and weaknesses of their methods. And second, to examine how the convergence of new technologies, concepts of organization and increased literacy led to the transformation of intelligence into a game changer in military operations. The telegraph, balloons, expansion and freedom of the press, cryptology, organized detainee interrogation techniques, and the world's first all source military intelligence organization made the Civil War a critical period in military intelligence history. There is a strong case to be made that Union intelligence made as much of a contribution to the outcome of the battle of Gettysburg as any other factor. In a larger sense, the Civil War transformed intelligence into a vital part of all modern warfare. Andy Evatt, President Kent Schweikert, Vice President Nancy Mendonca, Secretary John Restall, Treasurer Kurt DeSoto, Past President Jeff Mendonca, Newsletter & Membership Peter Greaney, Board Stan Schneider, Board Susan Claffey, Board OUR NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY OCTOBER 8TH FT MCNAIR OFFICER S CLUB Deadline for reservations is no later than 10 AM on Friday Oct 4th.

Get Serious about Preservation! Beginning in June of 2005, the DC Round Table has awarded its annual Edwin C. Bearss Award for Civil War Preservation. Past awards have been gifted to the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association, Friends of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the Civil War Trust for White Oak Road, Bentonville, and Shiloh, Monocacy National Battlefield, and the Richmond Battlefield Association. This is something that our Round Table has committed to doing every year to honor Ed and to repay him, in some small way, for speaking to us and leading our annual field trip without compensation. Ed donates his time to us and to many groups in order to spark interest in the Civil War and to build momentum to preserve the Civil War landscape. That land is rapidly disappearing every year so there is no better time than now to save it. Our award of $1000 each year, is given to the group identified by Ed Bearss to be the recipient. Your dinner reservation form has a spot to make a contribution. In addition, the Bearss Bear is on the table at every meeting to collect money for the same purpose. Think what one or five or ten dollars from each member every month would add up to at the end of the year. Added to the monies that we manage to set aside from book raffles, etc., we hope to expand our effort and contribute more than $1000 each year to battlefield preservation.

An Evening with Ed Bearss: In Conversation with James M. McPherson Evening Seminar Tuesday, December 3, 2013 6:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Military historian Ed Bearss is often referred to as a living national treasure. Anyone who has followed him across a battlefield and thousands have would agree. With his encyclopedic knowledge, commanding narratives, and trademark silver-tipped swagger stick, he brings the triumphs and defeats of legendary generals and ordinary soldiers to vivid life. Bearss, chief historian emeritus of the National Park Service, turned 90 this year, and that milestone provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate his achievements as a longtime tour leader for The Smithsonian Associates. Smithsonian magazine noted that In Civil War circles, Bearss is nothing short of a rock star. Spend an evening with him and interviewer James M. McPherson and explore how he achieved that status, as well as how his passion for sharing America s history has inspired and informed that passion in countless others. Cake and a champagne toast follow the program
