01 introduction welcome to the centre for health, wellbeing and social science taking care of our future. Our Health, Wellbeing and Social Sciences Centre is one of Edinburgh College s largest curriculum. Our extensive course provision offers 6 principal areas of learning: n Childhood Practice n Health and Social Care n Sports and Fitness. n English, Communications and Highers n Social Sciences Health and Veterinary Professions Work placements play a significant part in the provision of the quality learning and teaching experiences within this centre and we have established close partnerships with industry, universities, the NHS and Local Councils. We have over 200 dedicated staff, many of whom have industry experience to provide our students with the most relevant and up to date knowledge and skills.

02 childhood practice childhood practice our innovative courses are designed to meet industry requirements. Childhood Practice offers a programme of study in Early Education, Childcare and Play Work Services which meet the requirements of the Scottish Social Services Council. We have developed excellent partnerships with industry and have established SVQ Training Contracts with East Lothian, Midlothian and Fife Councils. We offer a range of full time and part time courses which will provide a platform for career opportunities or further study. The subjects you study could include: n Child development theory and practice n Play work and theory practice n Child protection, wellbeing and safety We promote active learning and you can expect to be learning both in and out of the classroom. Most of our courses also include a placement in a childhood practice setting such as a schools, nurseries or afterschool clubs. This provides a good understanding of the challenges and rewards of working with children and young people. It also helps to support future applications for employment. Our experienced staff have worked in a variety of childcare settings and therefore have up to date knowledge of the sector. Students may choose to progress to university or take up employment in a variety of settings which include council and private nurseries, after-school clubs, nannies, child minders and au pairs, learning assistants in schools and playgroup or crèche workers n for more information: 0131 660 1010

03 english, communications and highers english, communications and highers our higher english pass rates are above the national average. We have a full range of courses available within our English, Communication and Highers centre which add breadth and depth to the learning experience. Courses can be studied across a range of levels and modes as separate subjects or are available on a variety of vocationally relevant courses and as continuing professional development skills updates. If you are studying Highers, you can expect to develop learners knowledge and skills in your relevant subject as well as improving transferable skills such as problem solving, independent learning and time and task management in preparation for progression into further or higher education. You will develop your knowledge and proficiency in reading, writing and talking as well as creative and critical thinking. You will also gain valuable skills in planning, summarising, working as a team and debating together with IT and presentation skills. We work cross collaboratively with other academic disciplines to fully integrate assessment materials, supporting learners to progress to a variety of higher education destinations through available higher subject combinations. This provides a platform for continued learning or the first step to a rewarding career n

04 health and social care health and social care providing help and care for people who are in need or vulnerable can give you a great sense of personal and career fulfilment. If you want to develop your knowledge of health and social care, or want to work in a caring profession we have a range of person centred courses which will inspire and challenge you whilst providing you with the essential skills you need. You will gain an understanding of the impact that socialisation and behaviour have on health and social care and will be aware of the role of primary care; the integration of health and social care and the importance of reducing health inequalities. You will also learn about prevention strategies in healthcare and the counselling relationship exploring different modes of counselling and learning how to apply the skills of active listening to different settings. our courses have a person centred focus and are geared towards achieving scotland s 2020 vision. n Our Senior Phase Health and Social Care Academy offers an innovative approach to vocational training in health care delivered in partnership with Edinburgh City Council and NHS Lothian. n We are developing an S5 and S6 Health & Social Care Academy in partnership with Queen Margaret University, Borders Council and Borders College which will give students the opportunity to progress to Year 2 of a Degree in Health and Social Care at Queen Margaret University. n Our University Access to Nursing course provides guaranteed places in mental health, adult and learning disabilities Nursing Degree Programmes at Edinburgh Napier University. n NHS NC in Health and Social Care. This ground breaking course has been developed to ensure that you are equipped with the knowledge and skills to offer a high standard of care and are immediately ready to take up work positions within the NHS health and social care industry. n We offer a range of counselling courses offering a range of qualifications suitable for Practice. n We are the first College in Scotland to deliver a PDA in Mental Health Peer Support for individuals who have personal experience of mental health problems and who wish to take on the role of peer support workers. Students who successfully complete their courses have a variety of progression options including progression to further or higher education courses such as Nursing Degrees, Allied Health Degrees, Social Work Degrees, or can pursue employment opportunities as Health or Social Care workers in a wide range of settings n

05 social sciences social sciences edinburgh college provides a wide ranging and comprehensive curriculum of social science courses available to study at traditional higher level to hnc working with communities. Social Sciences courses offer students the opportunity to study an exciting and diverse range of disciplines from this wide field including: n Psychology n Sociology n History n Politics n Philosophy n Criminology There are opportunities to study Highers as well as Group Awards from SCQF Level 4 to Level 7. NC and HNC Social Science are popular courses and can lead to progression within further education, to higher education or to further training for a variety of careers including social work, community work, or work with the police. Our Social Sciences courses will encourage you to ask questions and challenge assumptions about the world we live in. You will also develop a range of interpersonal skills that will be valuable in your chosen career or higher education. Our teaching staff will endeavour to help you focus on where your study will take you within the areas of social science and potential career paths. The innovative course design and exceptional delivery methods of our Social Sciences programmes has resulted in high pass rates for HNC students and clear progression routes to further education and career development. 06 health and veterinary professions health and veterinary professions our health and veterinary department offers programmes of study that are unique to edinburgh college. We offer a comprehensive range of courses in the areas of: n Dental Nursing n Dental Technology n Pharmacy n Veterinary Sciences Many courses within this department enable registration with the relevant professional bodies. Our team work collaboratively with industry and the NHS in the design and delivery of the curriculum, providing work based placements which can enhance employment opportunities. We work in close association with veterinary and dental practices and local pharmacies, ensuring that best practice working standards are embedded within the course content. 07 sports and fitness sports and fitness sport and fitness is a rapidly growing, multi million pound industry. The Scottish Government is committed to encourage people to take part in sport and physical activities at all levels. Edinburgh College offers an excellent variety of sport and fitness courses, whether you are looking for a career in fitness, health and exercise or sports coaching. By undertaking our sports and fitness courses you will achieve first class leadership, communication and teamwork skills. You can expect to grow in confidence and independence and many of you will benefit from work or voluntary experiences via our new partnership with City of Edinburgh Council Active Schools. We offer courses from NC level through to Degree, allowing you to progress dependent on your academic and sport/fitness attributes. On completion of the courses, you will have the opportunity to go on to further sport and fitness related education at university or into direct employment as sports coaches, sports therapists, personal trainers and gym instructors. There are opportunities to work as employees of other organisations and businesses but you may prefer to become your own boss and enjoy the flexibility and benefits of being self employed. At Edinburgh College we also offer courses dedicated to those of you at a high performance level. These are delivered across a variety of sports including rugby, football, badminton and Tae-Kwon-Do and provide the opportunity to train professionally. edinburgh college boasts two superb purpose-built centres for sport and fitness at our granton and sighthill campuses. Facilities include modern and fully equipped gyms complete with bench and resistance equipment, dumbbell rack, Smith machine and a squat rack promote aerobic fitness, muscle strength and endurance. Two large multi-function sports halls provides excellent games and training facilities, whilst a comprehensive outdoor sports facility is used at Marine Drive near our Granton campus. The centres are used as training facilities for fitness and programme testing, coaching skills, bio mechanics and anatomy and physiology. At our Milton Road campus, in addition to class delivery, our students have access to our commercial health club and spa to use for dedicated skills practice time. This recently refurbished facility helps put their training into a more vocational context by operating within a commercial environment. our sports training staff will provide you with expert knowledge and support throughout your studies. Many of our staff are former professionals within their sport, vocational disciplines or currently coach at top level clubs. The college benefits from partnerships within the local community, schools and businesses with potential opportunities to gain Saltire awards. You will have the opportunity to participate in sporting events through Scottish Student Sport (SSS) and some of you may even qualify for a variety of competitions in conjunction with the National Squads Selection.
