OUR COMMITMENT HELLO We Are AITC-SK Our team is passionate about inspiring the next generation to care about the food they eat, where it comes from and the farmers who grow it. Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan (AITC-SK) is a registered charity. We partner with the agriculture and education communities to connect kids and agriculture through innovative, experiential, curriculum-based programs and resources. CHILDREN DESERVE TO KNOW WHERE THEIR FOOD COMES FROM. I am energized by our growing community of educators, volunteers, funders and partners. There are so many opportunities to create rich learning experiences for students and deepen their understanding, appreciation and respect for agriculture. I am confident that we can truly connect kids and agriculture in every school in the province, thanks to the strategic leadership of our board and the creative, dedicated and hard-working team who are the boots on the ground. - Sara Shymko Executive Director Sara Shymko Executive Director Our Team INFLUENCE AND INVOLVEMENT WITHIN THE EDUCATION COMMUNITY OUR STRATEGIC PRIORITIES AGRICULTURE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS AND SUSTAINABILITY Christine Meachem Financial and Administration Manager Gabrielle Edwards Program Coordinator Susan Jorgensen Programs Manager Paige Pister Program Coordinator (on leave) Ray Fontaine Little Green Thumbs Program Manager Ken Hurlburt Program Coordinator Brit MacDonald Little Green Thumbs Operations Manager Kirsten Falzarano Program Coordinator Christina Krysa Project Specialist Helen Froese Administration Assistant Nasira Nawaz Program Coordinator Kyle Ramage Administration Support Clerk Moving on... we will miss your energy, enthusiasm and hard work! Years ago, we didn t have to talk about agriculture because if you weren t a farmer, you were related to one or friends with one. Everyone knew where their food was being grown, so there was no need to teach about it in our schools. In 1931, one in three Canadians lived on a farm and now it s closer to one in 50. Today, teaching our youth where their food comes from and how it is produced is more important than ever. This is the reason that Agriculture in the Classroom is such an important organization, and why I am so proud to be part of it. Janice Tranberg This year, AITC-SK was able to reach over 68,000 students through its many programs and resources. I would like to thank the dedicated staff and volunteers of Agriculture in the Classroom for the work they do in making sure that our Saskatchewan youth understand the important role that agriculture plays in their everyday lives, from the food they eat to the jobs that agriculture brings to our province and country. And hopefully, this effort will trigger some good discussions about exactly where our food comes from and how it is grown. Westview Community Prince Albert Little Green Thumbs Teacher MAKING A DIFFERENCE Jeri McElvie AITC-SK Programs If students begin to care about food and the people who are responsible for producing it, then their natural curiosity will lead them to deeper learning. Our Approach Understanding Critical Thinking Our approach to agriculture education Understanding agriculture isn't easy in We provide educational opportunities is really simple - experiential, inquiry- the age of information, because it can to students so that they can discover, based and fun! be difficult to sort fact from fiction. explore, discuss and question. QUESTIONS? BRING THEM ON! In 2016, together with our partners, we provided over 300 unique educational experiences for 46,000 students! "Teacher, how did you do that?" My kindergarten student was standing in awe at the sight of our Little Green Thumbs garden jungle. The other children gathered around, excitedly pointing out all of the changes that had occurred during the week-long school break. The excitement reached an exuberant peak when I pinched off a lettuce leaf and ate it. Soon, everyone was tasting lettuce, even the picky eaters in the class! That same day, a mom popped into our classroom and asked to see the garden. She was curious about it because every day after school, her daughter was asking to buy some soil and seeds in order to grow her own food. Some children think that I am able to perform magic. Others, however, now understand that with a little soil and a few seeds, they can make their own magic happen. - Jeri McElvie Teacher Human beings are curious by nature. - Aristotle AG AT THE ZOO "Will this little seed really grow into a carrot?" - Jeri 7

International Year of Our Programs We are privileged to work with many partners who help us create meaningful learning experiences for thousands of students each year! In 2016, we celebrated International Year of Pulses (IYP) by partnering with the Saskatoon Health Region and Sask Pulse Partners: Agrium, Crop Production Services & Western Development Museum Growers to bring ag education to 20 complex-needs schools. What does it take to grow food for ous to eat? Over 1700 students explored this question through hands-on activities and games, resulting in a deeper appreciation of agriculture. Reach: 1780 Students Gr. 3-4 students Explore Ag I don t like chili, but I liked this." IYP Event Students recognized the role technology plays in agriculture advancement and global food security (and had some fun making ice cream). Reach: 200 Gr. 5-7 Students The schools were able to experience a fun, healthy and sustainable meal and learn about pulses in Saskatchewan. The students and staff loved the lunches, and almost all of the schools asked for the lentil lasagna recipes after the event! - Student Partner: Rayner Dairy Centre Sask Food Story Agriculture in the Classroom is the face of the Saskatchewan agriculture industry in classrooms across the province, where in a hands-on learning environment, they are helping students begin to forge the connection between farming and food. - Carl Potts Executive Director, Sask Pulse Growers Partner: Ministry of Agriculture & 50+ Agriculture Industry volunteers How do agriculture careers allow people to help the environment, solve problems, be creative, be innovative and help people? We asked our partners and friends working in agriculture to share with students how their Ag careers do just that! thinkag Career Networking Reach: 200 Gr. 10-12 Students OVER 5000 8 AITC-SK Annual Report 2016 MAKING A DIFFERENCE NEW IN 2016 students, teachers and parents were treated to a school-wide meal featuring pulses. - Anita Verlangen Health Promoting s Coordinator, Saskatoon Health Region We are now working with school administrators and their nutrition workers to include more pulses in the school nutrition programs.

Elementary Teacher Vanscoy A great day as a teacher is one when students are having so much fun that they don t even realize they are learning! Thanks to Agriculture in the Classroom, I have multiple hands-on resources that engage my students in these collaborative learning experiences. I always use the Seed Kit in science and the My Food Story resource will be a great fit for health. The resources come with everything I need to facilitate learning experiences with my class, including information and suggestions about content to talk about with each part of the activity. It's all so teacherfriendly! - Kathy Spence Teacher MAKING A DIFFERENCE Our Resources Kathy Spence AITC-SK equips teachers with accurate, balanced, science-based information that promotes inquiry and connects to their curriculums. In 2016, we partnered with the U of S Science Ambassadors to bring Ag Education to 12 northern Saskatchewan schools. NEW The Agri-Environment: Exploring a Healthy Relationship with the Land OLD SEED KIT New high school science courses presented an opportunity to develop a new agriculture resource to explore modern agriculture practices and technologies. Developed in consultation with teachers UPDATED Saskatchewan Seed Kit High quality photos We always seek improvement. New unique assessment Improved student activities The Seed Kit was good, but we asked teachers for feedback and then we made it even better. NEW My Food Story We all have a personal food story. This resource was an invitation for kids to explore and share their personal food story. Laminated place-mat for each student Lesson Plan NEW SEED KIT Materials for experiments included Animated videos about crop nutrients, crop protection and plant breeding ' ELLIOT S FOOD STORY Inspired kids to celebrate Ag month Over 4000 My Food Story place-mats were distributed to 170 classrooms across SK 11 AITC-SK Annual Report 2016

This is a statement that carries great weight with us cattle ranchers, and is definitely true when it comes to bridging the gap between farmers and consumers. I spend a considerable amount of time speaking with the public about what we do as farmers, as well as the why behind it. We all know that children are the key to our future, and this is important when it comes to food choice and knowledge. The local kids, whom I work with at our school love learning about agriculture and farmers. They are open and eager. They will be the difference in the future between wary, ill-informed people acting in fear of the unknown, and people who seek out actual farmers for answers. My choice to volunteer with AITC comes down to the knowledge that every moment spent in the classroom creates small changes in the present, and huge changes in the future of our industry. The grass is greenest where you water it, and watering the grass in the classroom creates the greatest return possibble on our investment. - Adrienne Ivey Volunteer Facebook Launched SEPT - DEC 2016 Our total reach was over 150,000 people from July to December Post receives 144 likes Post shared 234 times organically Hit 1000 page likes JULY We want to connect kids and agriculture and building our online community helps us do this.
