Tidbits from around Department of new Hampshire marine corps league September 2016 Editor: Cherie Monnell pdd aamazon@maine.rr.com 207 752-0025 Good afternoon. I got a referral for Cpl Peter Smith from the UMASS-Lowell Veteran Services Director yesterday. I just spoke to him, good kid. His wife just had twins, 10 weeks pre-mature! Twins are now at Eliot Hospital in Manchester. Peter has a 60% rating and was attending classes at UMASS-Lowell using his GI Bill (read only source of income). He had to drop out of classes to take care of their toddler son, Ethan which will have a negative impact on BAH. Peter is back in school. Peter now has a contact name and number for the local MCL detachment and sounded like as soon as he had time he may be interested in joining us. Anywho, reaching out to all my financial assistance resources. Please advise if you can help out in any way. S/F, Major Peter J. Project Vietnam 50 years later Synopsis of Hawai I commemorative event and reasons for the location: We are now in the midst of the 50th anniversary commemorative year of the Vietnam War. Fort DeRussy in Oahu, Hawaii was the first "official" R&R (Rest & Relaxation) site for the troops deployed to Vietnam. Oahu's airport was the fueling stop for most of the troop planes going over and coming back from Vietnam. The result of this was that for almost every American Soldier, Marine, Airman, and Sailor that served in-country in Vietnam, Hawaii was the last place in their homeland that they touched ground before going into combat. Located on Oahu is the Joint POW / MIA Accounting Command. Their motto is "Until they are home." It is here that human remains discovered in Vietnam as well as countries involved in all other conflicts are identified. They are dedicated to providing a full accounting of those Missing in Action. Oahu is home to the Pacific Command and houses major installations for all five component branches of the Armed Forces. The Vietnam POWs first returned to America at Hickham Air Force Base on Oahu. For nearly all of those 58,000 who never returned, Oahu was the last place in America that they would ever touch their homeland It is for these reasons that the State of Hawaii is sponsoring one of the largest commemorative events to recognize and honor those who served in Vietnam 50 years ago. The event is scheduled to take place from May 22 - May 28, 2017 in Waikiki. May 2017 Tentative schedule of events (this is the preliminary suggested schedule and very subject to added events): Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 20 22: Arrival Tuesday, May 23: Aloha Reception / Registration Wednesday, May 24: Hawaii night: Cosmopolitan and ethnic foods along with local, national and international entertainment. Welcoming address by the Governor and other dignitaries Thursday, May 25: POW/MIA/ and Gold Star Family Night at the Pacific Aviation Museum: An evening and USO show honoring all Vietnam Veterans with recognition of our POW, MIA, and MOH recipients and Gold Star Families. Friday, May 26: Waikiki Shell Concert: An evening concert with local, national, and International entertainers. Saturday, May 27: Waikiki Parade: Welcome Home parade for Vietnam Veterans and their families starting at Ala Moana Park, along Ala Moana and Kalakaua Boulevards, ending at Kapiolani Park. Sunday, May 28: Vietnam War Commemoration Service (Vietnam Candlelight Service): Cemetery at the National Cemetery of the Pacific starting at 1500 hours to honor Vietnam service personnel who were lost in the war, their families and our allies who fought shoulder to shoulder with us. The Goal: We are in the process of trying to raise $20,000. With this money we will spend up to $2,000 for plane fare and registration combined, for each of 10 Vietnam combat veterans. The Portsmouth, NH VFW auxiliary is sponsoring this project under their non-profit tax ID so that this money can be raised with all proceeds going to the cause. I would be happy to attend a meeting so that I can present you with more details on any questions that might be raised. Who will be eligible to receive the grants? New Hampshire Vietnam veterans who earned the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon and / or the Vietnam Service Medal will be eligible to submit, or have their name submitted. A DD-214 will be required as verification. How will we select the veterans who will receive the grants? All names submitted by midnight on October 8, 2016 will be entered in to a lottery-style drawing. Those selected must provide a letter from their doctor stating that their patient is medically cleared to take this long journey. Flight time each way is approximately 12 hours (plus lay overs). They will also be required to agree to be financially responsible for any and all costs other than airfare and registration and for all costs of anyone traveling with them. If any one cannot meet all of the criteria for eligibility, they will be disqualified from taking the trip and another name will be drawn. We will be drawing the names at the 50s 60s block party on October 10, 2016 between 1pm 5pm at the Annheuser-Busch facility s field in Merrimack.
