OVERALL GOALS & OBJECTIVES FOR EACH RESIDENT LEVEL FIRST-YEAR RESIDENT Patient Care 1) Demonstrate proficiency in the preoperative and postoperative care of surgical patients. 2) Demonstrate thorough, accurate, and efficient assessment of patients in the outpatient setting. 3) Provide post-operative care that recognizes and effectively treats common complications of surgery such as deep venous thrombosis, atelectasis, pneumonia, and infection. 4) Demonstrate the ability to care for surgical emergencies in the role of the surgical resident on-call. 5) Develop basic open and laparoscopic surgical technical skills appropriate for PGY-1 level. 1) Given a common condition requiring operation in general surgery or its specialties, describe the basic preoperative assessment of the patient, indications for surgery, and the expected course of uncomplicated post-operative recovery. 2) Given the signs and symptoms of a postoperative complication such as deep venous thrombosis, atelectasis, pneumonia, myocardial infarction, infection, stroke, renal failure, or operative site breakdown, demonstrate recognition of the nature of the problem and describe its appropriate evaluation and management. 3) Given a description of a surgical emergency, such as bleeding, hypotension, coma, seizure, cardiac or respiratory arrest, list the necessary steps in its evaluation and management. 4) Demonstrate acquisition of satisfactory open and laparoscopic skills for the PGY-1 level by passing the skills examinations and all rotation-specific operative skills evaluations.
