Summer 2017 A www.mwfa.net Email: mwfa@ameritech.net newsletter for and about the fastener industry. Celebrating 71 years of commitment to the fastener industry. 1946-2017 FASTENER TECH 17 Did Quality Outshine Quantity? June 5th-8th was a very busy week in the Rosemont, IL area with Fastener Tech 17 featuring informative/educational sessions by various groups as well as social time with the All Industry Reception. On June 5th Fastener Training Institute conducted a class on Why Fasteners Fail. Additional Sessions followed on June 6th. Sessions included Introduction to Coiled Springs by Spirol International, the Art and Science of Talent Development by Women in the Fastener Industry, Making Fasteners from Beginning to End by Fastener Technology Int l, and a Networking/ Brainstorming Session hosted by Young Fastener Professionals. The show featuring over 130 exhibitors showcasing manufactured goods and industry services. Fastener Tech 17 drew less attendees than Fastener Tech 15. Despite this, the most common comment heard from exhibitors was attendance seemed down but they felt they really saw quality attendees. Many exhibitors felt confident they had made good contacts at the show. Shows are like business, some years are up and some are down. Exhibitors didn t look at Fastener Tech 17 as an overall down year recognizing the number of contacts they were able to see and network with for the economical cost of the show. Fastener Tech 17 featured a low price for a complete booth package, exhibitor lunch and the All Industry Reception. Some of the sessions offered were gratis presenting and added benefit. Comments received include: Great job on the show once again. It was a success. Another great show, well done. The popular All Industry Reception was held following the first day of the show. While exhibitors and attendees enjoyed cocktails and appetizers Eric Dudas, of FCH Sourcing Network took the opportunity to present Mike McNulty of Fastener Technology Int l with an award for his 100th Fastener News Report on Fully Threaded Radio. We thank exhibitors and attendees who supported the show. View photos on page 3 & 4! See more posted online at www.mwfa.net In 2018, MWFA will present their 37th Annual Fastener Show. Exhibitors are invited to register for exhibit space early by using the registration form in this newsletter located on page 5, or going on line (www.mwfa.net) for a registration form. 2017 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS DUE SEPTEMBER 15TH School s Out for the Summer.. PRESIDENT'S NOTE Bob Baer/ Abbott-Interfast What a summer it has been so far in the MWFA! We had a great show in June, with our fourday line-up in conjunction with the Fastener Industry Coalition (FIC) for Fastener Tech '17. The Midwest weather has been fabulous and blessed us with its pleasant presence for our Golf Outing. As July and August heat up, you can cool down at our upcoming summer themed event, which I will talk about in a bit. Business has been very good this past quarter and while we are all fairly busy keeping up, let s not forget that a big part of our success is keeping in touch with customers and suppliers, especially those who belong to our own association. You can accomplish this easily by attending some of our upcoming events. It was great to see so many of you at Fastener Tech '17, and while attendance to the show was down from 2015, there were mostly positive comments about the quality of connections, leads and networking that took place. We had some last minute cancellations by companies who were just too busy to make the show this year. One of the few negative results of business picking up. There were some great educational seminars that took place, I hope you were able to attend at least one of them. And the FIC held it s first ever Fastener Summit on Wednesday afternoon following the close of the show. This event drew close to a hundred participants and was packed with information useful at all levels. It s always nice to get participation for our Golf Outing, held at Chevy Chase Country Club, which also happens to be the biggest one in our industry. This year was no different as we hosted close to 150 golfers including 40 or so during the AM shot gun start. This event, which benefits our Scholarship fund immensely, brings out many participants as well as sponsors. Thanks to all who participated once again this year. The weather was just fantastic and we enjoyed the company of a few sponsors on their contests holes. If you missed it, be sure to attend next year. As our mission goes, Where education is a priority, once again this year the MWFA will host Fastener Training Institutes Certified Fastener Training class. This is a weeklong class, which will be held at Belvedere Banquets the week of August 14. There is a special price for MWFA members so take advantage of this class, normally held out of town, while it takes place locally. On Thursday, August 17th, the MWFA will team up with the Young Fastener Professionals and Fastener Training Institute to hold our first MWFA Mixer. (see insert) Plan on attending this strictly social event, with free drinks and appetizers complements of the MWFA and sponsors. This MWFA Mixer will be held at Real Time Sports Bar in Elk Grove Village, IL (next to the class location). With some luck this great weather will continue and we will be able to enjoy an evening on the patio. Come spend some time right after work even if you just stop for one drink; leave based on your own schedule. In Sept, the MWFA will venture out to the Minneapolis, MN area to host a Print Reading class for our Minnesota members as well as non-members. Many members from all over will make their way to Minnesota for Sales calls and then stop by for this event. A dinner meeting will follow the class, the place will be determined shortly. If you have customers in the area, set up your schedule and come north to join us. We will be holding a very informative seminar October 5th covering PPAPs and Corrective Action Reports. Our instructor comes to us with a very extensive background so be sure to watch for more details on this seminar as these topics are very important to everyone s business. Has business been good? Are your company s sales following the up/down patterns that most distributors fall into? Did you know that the MWFA posts a graph of the monthly results from the Fastener Distributor Index so that our members can see business at a glance? We also include the latest trends from the Purchasing Managers Index as a comparison. There is an expectation that business will continue to be robust but it s nice to see the history. And if you want to be a part of it, you can participate by reporting monthly at http://www.fdisurvey.com. Meanwhile, head to www.mwfa.net / Home page, click the Current FDI Index Graph and take a look. It has been quite a ride this year and even a record broken! Enjoy the rest of summer and we look forward to seeing you at these exciting upcoming events. 65TH ANNUAL MWFA GOLF OUTING The MWFA hosted their 65th annual Golf Outing on June 8th at Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling, IL. To accommodate the many golfers, there was a shotgun start at 7:00 a.m. and another at noon. Over 150 golfers enjoyed great weather, many contests, and some awesome networking took place both during the outing and the cocktail hour before dinner. The two shotgun tee times allowed all golfers to lunch together. This year s outing featured some new contests including a chip shot into a floating pool in the pond (sponsored by South Holland Metal Finishing) Putter Pong (sponsored by Central Wire), Closest to the Pin for a 55 inch HDTV (sponsored by Solutions Industries) and a Closet to the Pin where every foursome had a tee shot winner and each of the winners were further entered to win one of two prizes-the grand prize a BBI tool bag filled with Proferred Tools and a second prize-cubs tickets (sponsored by Brighton-Best Int l). The great support of our many MWFA member companies once again created a fun event which offered many contest prizes, raffle prizes and a silent auction. FBI ADDRESSES MID-WEST FASTENER ASSOCIATION Cyber Theft-an Issue That Needs to be Taken Seriously Byron Franz, Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who has worked on national security matters for over 20 years met with MWFA members in Milwaukee on April 6th, to discuss Cyber Theft. Cyber Theft is a serious issue, especially for companies. Company businesses have been compromised due to their records being stolen through cyber theft. Thieves acquiring information may share with other companies whether local or overseas, they may also hold the information ransom. There is an issue with information being stolen and given to overseas companies. Companies must institute reasonable measure to protect against risks for the government to be able help them in the event of a cyber theft. Cyber attacks are happening every day. It is an unseen hit in cyber space, unlike a crime on the streets that is witnessed. One click can take out a corporate network. Computers with webcam should not have their webcams exposed. Information can be taken right off the desk through the webcam. You close your windows and lock your doors at night but do you lock your cyber doors? Auto updates and full scans are important. It s amazing that companies spend more in coffee than IT protection. There are third party providers of security but usually free services get you nothing leaving the IT fortress unsafe. Many companies are only 15% secure. Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) is an issue. (APT) is a network attack in which an unauthorized person gains access to a network and stays there undetected for a long period of time. The intention of an APT attack is to steal data rather than to cause damage to the network or organization. Other countries can phish creating bait to steal information. They can learn about a victim by watching keystrokes. Cyber theft is not just a business issue but also a personal issue. Families need to protect themselves also -close cameras and computers when not in use, compress files (it removes information), turn off Internet switch on computers, close ports not necessary for home or business. Showing locations on what is posted on the internet can lead a kidnapper to a child is one example of the dangers to families. To reduce risks companies can send out test emails to see if employees open them. Zipping files introduces viruses. Suspicious emails or attachments should never be opened. Beware of Spear phishing, which is an email-spoofing attack that targets a specific organization or individual, seeking unauthorized access to sensitive information. Spear-phishing attempts are not typically initiated by random hackers, but are more likely to be conducted by perpetrators out for financial gain, trade secrets or information. There are also Drive bys which go to a website, hit and redirect information compromising it. Ransom wares will get your information and then ask for money to not send it out. Yes, your computer info can be held ransom. It is safest for companies /individuals to assume compromise and have cyber insurance. There is intrusion detection software and Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) which should be implemented. Use longer passwords for more safety. Phones can also be used to extract information. We could defeat this issue by going back to typewriters but that is hardly going to happen in today s world. It is important to have an Intrusion Response Plan. It is important to take all safety measures possible as a cyber theft can be very costly as well as kill a business. 10

READER'S CORNER FCH to Award Fastener Training Institute Scholarship The FCH Sourcing Network has teamed up with the Fastener Training Institute for a fourth year to announce the promotion and selection of a scholarship candidate who will be awarded full tuition to the Fastener Training Institute course, Fastener Training Week. Once completed, the course qualifies students to sit for the Certified Fastener Specialist exam, a distinguished industry credential. To qualify for selection, candidates must work within the fastener industry and must submit a brief essay, approximately 300 words in length. The essay should address the importance of training in the fastener industry, and the impact of training on the candidate's career. Candidates can be nominated by owners or managers, who are welcome to submit an essay on behalf of a nominated candidate. There is a limit of one nominated candidate per company if the nomination is being made by a manager on behalf of a candidate, however there is no limit to the number of individual candidates from any given company who submit an essay on their own behalf. The deadline to submit scholarship candidate essays is September 30th, 2017, and the winner will be announced during the Las Vegas fastener show, October 18, 2017. In addition to the grand prize, four runners up prizes will be awarded. Runners up will receive a significant discount to Fastener Training Week and an FTI reference manual. The FTI will also provide vouchers to all scholarship applicants to attend an online training webinar, so there is no reason not to get applications in ahead of the deadline. Scholarship essays become property of the Fastener Training Institute.
