River Skipper 3 Did You Know? if you sign up a prospective student that we are offering a membership incentive to that student receives the second year of membership at 50% off? That s right we are discounting the second year of membership at half price Thank You to Don Magnus for bringing the Skiff to put on display at the conference, we heard a lot of nice complements on the workmanship that went into the craft and really made the event feel nautical! Don is housing the skiff at his house for safe keeping, much appreciated Sir! From the Commander s Desk W e are off to a great start of our Squadron year 2014 and, really not kidding folks, boating season is just around the corner. I literally was just called today to schedule my boat launch for the week of April 21. Life s roughest storms prove the strength of our Anchors. - unknown author So far, we have installed a new Bridge, planned a wonderful fun filled year and hosted the Spring D10 District Conference. I want to take a moment and graciously thank Karen Schmit and her best mate, Bob for organizing and managing the D10 conference. Without their support and dedication along with all our members who provided their time, talent, donations, baskets, table setting, reservations and greeting people at the registration table, this event would not have been possible. Bob and Karen, congratulations on a very successful and profitable conference! You are the greatest! Kudos to you and your team! I especially liked the dessert at the Friday event with the addition of Hostess Twinkie s and Cupcakes, nice touch to the evening! Lastly, I want to Congratulate Dale Perry on his installation as the new D10 District Commander. Dale made an amazing appearance on Friday night singing Karaoke. He can now add that to his resume next to wine and beer making! Calling All Members Calling all members to help our SEO, Dr. George Battis! We are in a re-energizing year with our education department and Cdr John Gagich, S need your help. At our monthly board meeting we have 11 requests for ABC (America s Boating Course) and will be setting a training date within the next 3 weeks at one of our marina conference room facilities. George is seeking help from our members who can take small segments (small 1 or 2 hours) of the course and teach that part. We feel that if we have enough members to each take a small segment of the course and teach it, we will not have to ask anyone to sacrifice a lot of time. Please contact Dr. Battis at George.Battis@Securian.com or call 651-775-5800 or John Gagich at jgagich@mchsi.com or call 952-210-7029 to offer your assistance. This is a wonderful experience and a chance to engage in the education of new boaters. You might even make an amazing new friend and future member of our fine organization. Stay tuned for upcoming events and activities by checking out our website. www.stpaulsquadron.org. The website has had a couple of facelifts including now the ability for pricing events that require multiple levels of pricing using Paypal. Kari Hill and Terry Higgins along with lots of help from Nancy Anderson and Mary Holmen have a great line up for our next two meetings in April and May. Please check out Kari s event updates in the River Skipper. That s all for now will see you at the Fitting Out, Bingo and Potluck Meeting at the St. Croix Marina, Hudson, WI, 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM on April 27.

4 May 2014 Educational Officer USPS Member Course Sampling Seamanship Piloting Advanced Piloting Junior Navigation Navigation Cruising and Cruise Planning Engine Maintenance Instructor Development Marine Electronics Sail Weather Practical On the Water Training T he Commander has made it a priority for the education area this year to do the following, 1) to offer more classes to the membership, 2) to have several ABC classes for the boating public and 3) To help increase and retain the membership of our squadron through a high quality educational program. This year will be a great opportunity for the squadron members to showcase the width and breath of the educational experience of our numerous courses and seminars and more importantly a chance to welcome newcomers to the boating experience and of course friendship. Most of the boating public, who boat on the lakes and rivers in the state, do not usually have a support network of boating friends to ask when they encounter problems on the water nor do they have friends who are hardcore boaters to invite on the water. Those who have boats at marinas often find the others on the dock often do not come down except a few times a year or already have left to go out on the water. Those with families often find it difficult to find a boating experience that is both fun and family friendly for all members in the family. The USPS has long been known for all of these elements and more. The membership has an impressive degree of training experience and knowledge and varied social programs for the whole family. The quality of the educational programs was recently Lt/C George Battis, S recognized at the District meeting. Members are eager to lend a hand whether you are a new boater interested in "learning the ropes" or a seasoned mariner looking to go to the next horizon, the USPS has a program and help for you. ABC In short, if you want to learn safe boating and increase your skills while having a great time for the whole family, the USPS is hard to beat. The education kickoff is planned for the first ABC course at the Bayport Marina on May 15, 22, 29 and June 5 starting at 18:30-20:30 hours. I am looking for qualified instructors to help in this new kickoff for the first ABC course followed soon by other upper level courses this year. I will be working with Dave West, for the training calendar of courses and would like to hear from you, the membership what your interests are in other courses than the ABC course, so we can tailor this year's program for you. Let's take it to the next horizon! I can be reached at George.Battis@Securian.com or at 651-775-5800 and would like to hear your opinion as to what would make us a better educational department and courses you are interested in taking.

6 May 2014 D10 Spring Conference 28-30 March 2014 Thanks to all who helped St. Paul Sail and Power Squadron host the District Conference. Your planning and participation efforts paid off with a meaningful, fun weekend for district members and guests. The weekend included a celebration of the past at the Friday night bandstand complete with a DJ, dancing and some karaoke. Members and guests danced to music from the bandstand era. On Saturday, the day was filled with planning and informational meetings and seminars including one on freshwater electric shock drowning prevention. Vessel Safety Examiners received training on the latest updates so that they can complete safety exams this summer. On Saturday evening, we celebrated with Dale and Vivian Perry at Dale s installation as District Commander.
