ART Drawing Skills Students will meet in the visual arts room to learn shading and drawing techniques using graphite and charcoal. This camp is for beginners as well as more advanced art students. Session 104 (For students entering grades 5-8) July 9-12 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Cost: $75 Kate Doane Art Exploration Students will meet in the visual arts room to create and learn about art. Students will work with texture, pattern, paint and more, and at the end of the week, will have two works of art to take home. All supplies are included. Students will focus on learning proper technique, musical elements, chords and reading tablature. Music will consist of songs students know from groups such as the Beatles, Maroon 5, Guns N Roses, Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons, Katy Perry, and many more. Session 107 (For students entering grades 6-12) June 25-29 10:00 a.m.-11:15 a.m. Cost: $75 Bob Mamminga Introduction to Jazz Band Students who play the flute, alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, trombone, baritone, trumpet, guitar, bass guitar, piano, and mallet percussion drum set will play in a jazz ensemble setting and will work on performing a wide variety of jazz music (Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and some modern music). Students will use their individual skills with a group and make progress in rhythm, melody, balance, improvisation and other musical elements, and should be comfortable on their instruments. All equipment is provided. The students will perform in a concert at the end of the week. Fairhead, T. Holinger ENGLISH Book to Movie This camp is for students who enjoy reading a book and then watching the story played out in film. Students will be given copies of four books which have been made into movies. Each participant should read the book before watching the movie. A short discussion of the book will be followed by watching the movie. Then a discussion will follow the movie. Refreshments will be served. Among the books/movies to be enjoyed are The Secret Life of Bees," The Fault in Our Stars, Wonder, and a title to be selected by the campers. Writing the College Application Essay Students feeling stressed about college applications will learn about factors to consider when choosing a college, as well as those for which college admissions counselors are looking from applicants. Students will examine the process for college application essay writing and learn what makes a good essay. In this camp, students will read sample essays, brainstorm essay ideas, participate in peer editing and receive instructor feedback. Session 120 (For students entering grades 11-12) June 19-22 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Cost: $125 Mary Pratscher Yearbook Theme Development During this two-day camp, students will develop the verbal and visual theme of the 2018-2019 Yearbook, including color scheme, fonts, visual theme extensions and concepts, and will prepare students to hit the ground running on the first day of class. MythBusters Quest for Truth! Inspired by the popular TV show "Myth Busters," St. Francis High School science instructors will challenge students to find the truth and debunk scientific myths as they use the scientific method. Students are encouraged to be fearless, ask questions, design experiments, and investigate misconceptions and myths about science. In a fun and creative environment, this camp will help prepare students for exploring the scientific method as utilized in their high school science courses. All supplies are included. Session 210 (For students entering grades 5-8) June 18-22 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Cost: $125 Sandy DeCraene Cheerleading This camp is open to both girls and boys interested in cheerleading (no experience is necessary). Junior cheerleaders will learn the basics of proper motion technique, jumps, stunting technique, and tumbling skills. They will be taught two to three sideline chants, a short dance, and a floor cheer that they can bring back to their own teams for use during their cheer seasons. Athletes should bring water and wear cheer shoes or gym shoes, as well as comfortable clothing for physical activity. Girls Lacrosse This camp combines skills development and scrimmage play, as age-specific techniques are taught to help players learn and refine their skills. Each session is designed to teach and perfect the basic stick skills of the game. Players will quickly gain confidence in catching, throwing, dodging, ground ball pickups, and shooting. All participants must have certified girls mouth guards. A limited number of lacrosse sticks and goggles are available as loaners.
