ART Drawing Skills Students will meet in the visual arts room to learn shading and drawing techniques using graphite and charcoal. This camp is for beginners as well as more advanced art students. Session 104 (For students entering grades 5-8) July 9-12 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Cost: $75 Kate Doane Art Exploration Students will meet in the visual arts room to create and learn about art. Students will work with texture, pattern, paint and more, and at the end of the week, will have two works of art to take home. All supplies are included. Session 106 (For students entering grades 5-8) July 9-12 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Cost: $75 Kate Doane BAND Beginning Guitar/Ukulele This camp is aimed at students who wish to get started playing guitar/ukulele. Students will focus on learning proper technique, musical elements, chords and reading tablature. Music will consist of songs students know from groups such as the Beatles, Maroon 5, Guns N Roses, Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons, Katy Perry, and many more. Session 107 (For students entering grades 6-12) June 25-29 10:00 a.m.-11:15 a.m. Cost: $75 Bob Mamminga Introduction to Jazz Band Students who play the flute, alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, trombone, baritone, trumpet, guitar, bass guitar, piano, and mallet percussion drum set will play in a jazz ensemble setting and will work on performing a wide variety of jazz music (Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and some modern music). Students will use their individual skills with a group and make progress in rhythm, melody, balance, improvisation and other musical elements, and should be comfortable on their instruments. All equipment is provided. The students will perform in a concert at the end of the week. The music will include Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and many more. Students will work in sectionals and in a large ensemble setting. Students will be able to use their individual skills with a group and make progress in rhythm, melody, balance, improvisation and other musical elements. Students will focus on playing several different cadences and techniques that are applicable to a drumline. Students will have the opportunity to play snare drum, bass drum, quads, and cymbals, as well as play a cadence on garbage cans and paint buckets. All equipment is provided. Session 112 June 25-29 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Cost: $90 Bob Mamminga CHOIR Swing Choir This camp offers a chance for students to enhance their choral skills over the summer in an energetic and fun setting. Students will improve vocal skills and learn important choral elements through fun songs. Choreography is integrated in this camp. The camp meets in the Music Room. A final performance is scheduled for July 12; 11:30 a.m. Session 114 (For students entering grades 8-12) July 9-12 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $90 Nina Schroeder IMEA Choir This advanced camp is for students who plan on auditioning for the IMEA District 9 Honor Choir in October. Tonal skills and the music for the auditions will be explored. The camp meets in the Music Room. Swing & IMEA Choirs Students in grades 10-12 who wish to take both swing and IMEA choir camps should use this camp code. Students will receive the music for both camps. A final performance is scheduled for July 12; 11:45 a.m. Session 116 (For students entering grades 8-12) July 9-12 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $120 Nina Schroeder Vocal Arts This camp offers growing singers a chance to work on vocal technique, learn healthy singing techniques, and enhance their repertoire. Students will learn a variety of music and enhance their singing skills in this one-hour camp. A final performance is scheduled for July 12; 12:45 p.m. Summer Studio Voice Lessons are also available. Campers will learn about French culinary highlights, make French-inspired food & drinks, and then participate in field trips to restaurants in the area which relate to the theme. Fairhead, T. Holinger ENGLISH Book to Movie This camp is for students who enjoy reading a book and then watching the story played out in film. Students will be given copies of four books which have been made into movies. Each participant should read the book before watching the movie. A short discussion of the book will be followed by watching the movie. Then a discussion will follow the movie. Refreshments will be served. Among the books/movies to be enjoyed are The Secret Life of Bees," The Fault in Our Stars, Wonder, and a title to be selected by the campers. Session 113 (For students entering grades 6-10) June 20, 27 and July 12, 20 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $135 J. Schuller, J. Rath Fun With Grammar In this camp, students will have the opportunity to prepare for Freshman English at St. Francis High School by reviewing the parts of speech, noun functions, and diagramming. The basics of grammar will be taught and reviewed through fun and interactive games. Students will need to bring a notebook, folder, pen, pencil and highlighter. Writing the College Application Essay Students feeling stressed about college applications will learn about factors to consider when choosing a college, as well as those for which college admissions counselors are looking from applicants. Students will examine the process for college application essay writing and learn what makes a good essay. In this camp, students will read sample essays, brainstorm essay ideas, participate in peer editing and receive instructor feedback. Session 120 (For students entering grades 11-12) June 19-22 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Cost: $125 Mary Pratscher Yearbook Theme Development During this two-day camp, students will develop the verbal and visual theme of the 2018-2019 Yearbook, including color scheme, fonts, visual theme extensions and concepts, and will prepare students to hit the ground running on the first day of class. New yearbook students will learn the program used to create the yearbook. Students should bring lunch to camp. PREREQUISITE: Students must be enrolled in Yearbook for the 2018-2019 school year. Session 105 (For students enrolled in Yearbook 2018-2019) July 16-17 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Cost: $90 Kate Doane SCIENCE Who Done It? Crime Scene Science Students will engage in fun activities and hands-on labs as they use the scientific method to find clues, collect evidence, and use data to crack a secret case. All supplies are included. Session 121 (For students entering grades 5-6) July 16-19 9:00 a.m-11:00 a.m. Cost: $125 Patty Dahle NGSS Science: Food, Flying Projectiles, and Animals OH MY! Students will learn how all the fun things they already love are related to science. This camp includes engaging inquiry-based activities that involve Chemistry, Physics, Environmental and Animal Science, and is geared towards developing students minds in asking questions, collecting data, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills (aligned with NGSS standards and practices). *Field Trip to Brookfield Zoo: July 19. Parent permission is required. Students will need to bring water and a sack lunch. (The cost is included in camp registration). MythBusters Quest for Truth! Inspired by the popular TV show "Myth Busters," St. Francis High School science instructors will challenge students to find the truth and debunk scientific myths as they use the scientific method. Students are encouraged to be fearless, ask questions, design experiments, and investigate misconceptions and myths about science. In a fun and creative environment, this camp will help prepare students for exploring the scientific method as utilized in their high school science courses. All supplies are included. Session 123 (For students entering grade 9) July 16-19 9:00 a.m-11:00 a.m. Cost: $125 Patty Dahle SPORTS Baseball This skills camp, coached by former professional pitcher and current head baseball coach at St. Francis High School, is designed to teach young athletes both the fundamentals and the mental aspects of baseball. Athletes will participate in competitive, fun and unique drills that are intended to raise their baseball I.Q. and deliver advanced knowledge of the game through hitting, fielding, pitching and base running. SPORTS Girls Basketball Athletes looking to improve their skills and strategy in basketball will enjoy working directly with our current teams and coaching staff as they learn and practice drills in dribbling, passing and shooting. Campers will have the opportunity to play scrimmage games with each other. Session 210 (For students entering grades 5-8) June 18-22 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Cost: $125 Sandy DeCraene Cheerleading This camp is open to both girls and boys interested in cheerleading (no experience is necessary). Junior cheerleaders will learn the basics of proper motion technique, jumps, stunting technique, and tumbling skills. They will be taught two to three sideline chants, a short dance, and a floor cheer that they can bring back to their own teams for use during their cheer seasons. Athletes should bring water and wear cheer shoes or gym shoes, as well as comfortable clothing for physical activity. Session 211 (For students entering grades 1-8) June 18-21 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Cost: $100 Brittany Esquivel Dance Dancers will train with the current coach and senior captains of the varsity dance team as they learn the school song and a few sidelines, and experience what it s like to be a St. Francis High School Spartanette! Proper technique for turns/leaps/extensions, conditioning and endurance, as well as fun combos in jazz, lyrical, pom and hip-hop will also be taught. Session 212 (For students entering grades 6-8) June 18-20 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Cost: $75 Aretese Low Football In this camp, current coaching staff and senior leaders will instruct athletes in position-specific drills, the rules of the game and team building exercises. Athletes will participate in activities on the field designed to help strengthen their tackling and offensive and defensive skills. Athletes will rotate between stations and have a chance to compete at the end of each session in order to facilitate learning. Session 215 (For students entering grades 7-12) June 4-8 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Cost: $160 Gay Crain Boys Lacrosse Athletes will work on stick skills and overall technique, as well as raising their lacrosse IQ in game time situations. Strength and conditioning drills, that the athletes can practice year round, will also be taught. Girls Lacrosse This camp combines skills development and scrimmage play, as age-specific techniques are taught to help players learn and refine their skills. Each session is designed to teach and perfect the basic stick skills of the game. Players will quickly gain confidence in catching, throwing, dodging, ground ball pickups, and shooting. All participants must have certified girls mouth guards. A limited number of lacrosse sticks and goggles are available as loaners. This camp is geared toward the beginning/intermediate skill level, however the skills and techniques are appropriate for all athletes. Participants will be instructed on proper warm-ups and cool downs, effective workouts, off season preparation, competition strategies, drills for improvement, and weight training. Session 221 (For students entering grades 6-12) June 4-July 13 (M,W,F) No camp week of July 4 6:15 p.m.-8:15 p.m. (M,W) 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. (F) Cost: $150 Scott Nelson Boys Soccer This camp combines the technical and tactical focus required to play at the varsity high school level. Athletes will participate in individual and game activities which will enhance their skills and provide opportunities to demonstrate their full potential. Swimmers will work through all strokes and learn foundational dryland exercises. Swimmers will be filmed daily and receive their footage, as well as written feedback from coaches. This camp meets at the Wheaton Sport Center Pool and is geared toward both newer and experienced swimmers. Swimmers should bring a front mount snorkel. Summer Musical Mary Poppins Jr. This camp is for students who wish to advance their theatrical techniques. Students will act, sing and dance as they perform Mary Poppins Jr. in a professional theatre setting with an audience. All registered students will be cast in the show.
