Dear Future Registered Nursing Student: INFORMATION SECTION Thank you for your interest in our registered nursing program commencing in January. To be considered for the RN program, you must meet the following requirements by June 30 th : 1. Be currently enrolled in Allan Hancock College 2018 LVN program. Candidates must take and meet the merit based admissions cut score. The merit based admissions test is held after graduation from the LVN program in December. Cut scores are handed out in November. Allan Hancock College Associate Degree in Nursing Program (ADN) is designated by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) as a Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) Registered Nursing (RN) upgrade program. This means that unlicensed vocational nursing students who are accepted into the ADN program MUST take and successfully pass the LVN examination (State Boards) before the end of the first semester of the ADN Program. The first semester ends on the last day of instruction. Should the vocational nursing student not pass the test or should the student fail to take the exam in the first semester time frame, the student will be dropped from the ADN program. If the student fails the LVN board exam, they will be allowed to complete the semester s coursework. Grades will be posted as earned (See re-admission policy). 2. Submit a completed RN program application (attached) to the Health Sciences office located at the Allan Hancock College, 800 South College Drive, Room M 132, Santa Maria, CA 93454. The RN program application must be received by June 30 th. 3. Academic prerequisites (complete by June 30 th with a letter grade of C or better): Biology 124 - Anatomy with lab Biology 125 - Physiology with lab Biology 128 Microbiology with lab English 101 - Freshman Composition: Exposition Math 331 Algebra 2 Psychology 101 Introduction to Psychology 4. Merit based admission criteria: All new registered nursing applicants need to meet merit based admission requirements in addition to prerequisite courses. Screening of applications will include looking at overall GPA, Number of Science Repetitions (Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology), and score obtained on the Merit Based Admissions Test. Any student with more than 4 attempts in science prerequisite courses is unable to apply for the Allan Hancock College ADN program. *AHCRN = 1.181 (Cumulative GPA) + 0.160 (Merit Based Admission Test) 0.568 (Core Biology Repetitions)* For your convenience, the merit based admission criteria table is available on the nursing webpage (http://www.hancockcollege.edu/academic_departments/health_sciences/nursing/rn.php). Each LVN student has two attempts to successfully meet the admission criteria for the Allan Hancock College RN program. The first attempt is after their LVN graduation at AHC. If the applicant does not meet the criteria (cut score) on their first attempt for admission, the applicant must meet with the Program Director to develop an individualized remediation plan no sooner than February first of the following year. The remediation plan will need to be completed prior to the following year application period in order to apply as a new RN applicant at which time be placed on the waitlist. 1
5. Seating Procedure and RN Priority Seating Students seated in the current LVN program at Allan Hancock College who have completed all RN prerequisites and the following additional requirements by June 30, 2018 will be eligible for RN priority placement in the 2019 RN program: ADN & BRN degree Requirements (speak with Julie if you have any questions) All current RN applicants need to meet merit based admission requirements in addition to prerequisite courses. 6. Once accepted into the program, all students are required to have a current CPR certification that must be maintained by the student throughout the nursing program. Only Healthcare Provider, BLS or Professional Rescuer cards will be accepted. A copy will need to be turned in with your acceptance packet. 7. Current AHC LVN students are not required to do another physical exam, unless you had any condition that required a doctor s release during the 2018 LVN year. A copy will need to be turned in with the acceptance packet. 8. It is the students responsibility to provide the Health Sciences Office with up-to-date records for Flu and TB. You will need to turn in a current receipts to the office with your acceptance packet. 9. Acceptance packets will be EMAILED to the accepted students in November. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING LICENSURE BY A STATE REGULATORY BODY Please note that fingerprinting is required for licensure as a California Registered Nurse. Persons who have been convicted of a felony are subject to close scrutiny by the Board of Registered Nursing on an individual basis. The board may refuse to issue a license even after successful completion of the NCLEX-RN if a background check reveals a significant infraction.
