What is YPI? The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) is an active citizenship programme that raises awareness amongst young people about philanthropy and their local community. Each participating school, each year, is responsible for directing a 3000 YPI Grant to a local charity through a unique programme of team work, research and competition. YPI Scotland is all about creativity and passion, leaving the four walls of the classroom behind, and supporting the issues young people care most about. Originating in Canada, YPI is now an international programme and, in 2017/18, will be delivered in partnership with 230 secondary schools from across Scotland. This represents in excess of 31,000 young people participating in YPI Scotland, with responsibility for directing 690,000 of YPI grants to small, local charities. The programme is principally funded and managed in Scotland by The Wood Foundation. YPI is very much the kind of learning which Curriculum for Excellence is seeking to develop. GRAHAM DONALDSON TEACHING SCOTLAND S FUTURE

Aims of YPI To engage a full year group of participating students (S2-S6) through a curricular based programme. To develop the next generation of responsible citizens and effective contributors. To develop the skills and confidence of young people through a real life, hands on experience of philanthropy. To raise awareness of social service issues and the work of local charities, and channel funds to them effectively. YPI Scotland has been recognised in a number of HMIE Reports as an example of best practice, with specific reference made to the programme s ability to develop wider achievement and enrich the life of the school. It is becoming increasingly clear that YPI very much supports the type of learning that Curriculum for Excellence aims to foster. Because of YPI my eyes have been opened to the wider world around me. YPI has given me the opportunity to see those less fortunate than myself and the amazing charities that give so much, but gain so little, to make the lives of others the best they can be. YPI STUDENT OLDMACHAR ACADEMY, ABERDEEN

YPI gives students some time to explore issues that exist in their local community, and the opportunity to be a voice and make a difference to a charity that they re interested in. It s win, win for everyone. CLARE FULTON AGE CONCERN DUNDEE

Growth & impact of YPI Since 2008 2017/18 Grown from 10 to 230 schools Engaged over 111,000 students Worked with over 4,000 teachers Awarded 2,583,000 in grants to local Scottish charities A further 690,000 will be directed to local Scottish charities 230 secondary schools will take part across Scotland 31,000 students will participate 32 Local Authorities engaged in the programme 100% Teachers report positive impact on students key employability skills including presentation and team working skills. 99% Teachers report positive impact on students confidence levels. 99% Teachers report that students are more able to identify and describe social issues within their community as a result of YPI. 70% Teachers report that students have remained engaged with their charities after completing the YPI programme. Those moments of lump in the throat just remind us of the reasons that we continue to encourage our pupils to engage with YPI and in their local community, building most valuable life skills and compassion for others. YPI TEACHER DOUGLAS ACADEMY, EAST DUNBARTONSHIRE

#1 YPI Launch Students learn how the programme works through a year group assembly or class based introduction. The YPI Process #2 Form Teams In small teams, students identify the social needs of their local community. #3 Research Teams research and analyse a number of local charities in their community. #4 Choose Teams select the charity they believe best addresses their chosen issue. #5 Contact Teams contact and visit their charity to gain a detailed understanding of what they do and how they operate. #6 Presentation Each team then prepares and delivers a presentation focused on their chosen charity, detailing what impact 3,000 would have on the service they provide. #7 YPI Finals The most discerning teams then deliver their presentations and compete for the 3000 YPI grant in front of a panel of judges at their YPI school final.
