However, they salute all, both past and present who have shaped America into the great beacon of freedom it shall eternally remain. Greetings fellow Legionnaires! Happy Independence Day! Most of us know Independence Day as The 4th of July. The formal or proper name of this date is Independence Day and there is a historical significance for this which I would like to briefly review. Independence Day is: The day in 1776 that the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress. A federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire. th America s Birthday (this year America s 240 Birthday). Since last month and until the day of this writing, I asked about 100 people, both veterans and civilian citizens What does Independence Day mean to you? Interestingly, one common theme revealed itself within the summation of their responses...one s freedom to make their own choice...one s freedom to choose...ones ability to move about freely and with out barriers...life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness There are other federal holidays which commemorate the causes of freedom, though let us never forget those brave men and women of yesteryear who fought for our Independence days.
