ODESSA ROTARY CLUB WEBSITE: www.clubrunner.ca/odessa Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar Kelly Combs Leaves for Morocco, North Africa The Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship Program, founded in 1947, is the Rotary Foundation s oldest and best known program. The purpose of the program is to further international understanding and relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. Odessa Rotary Club is proud to be Kelly s sponsor club. Kelly is the first Ambassadorial Scholar ever from Odessa, Texas. Rotary International Past District Governor, R.C. Paulette, a member of The Odessa Rotary Club, is Kelly s Outbound Counselor. He will keep in contact and report on Kelly s year of study at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco. Kelly was selected by Rotary International District 5730 to receive this prestigious scholarship for 2010-2011. Kelly graduated in May from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin with a BA degree in Political Science. He will leave July 22, 2010 for Morocco in North Africa where he will work for one year on his MBA in Business Administration. This Rotary adventure began for Kelly in the summer of 2008 when he picked up a brochure at UTPB describing the Ambassadorial Scholarship Program. He then contacted long time friend, Rotary PDG R.C. Paulette for further information for submitting an application for this program. R.C. provided encouragement, as much of his time as Kelly needed, the names and internet connections with up to date information and an application that could be downloaded. With that information in hand, he completed and met all the requirements for the program in a very timely manner. Rotary member and Music Instructor, Ronald Bennett and Dr. Carol Ann Traut, Professor at UTPB, provided strong recommendations which were submitted to the District 5730 selection committee. He was personally interviewed by the District Committee and selected. Kelly s resume is impressive, not the least of which was a four month internship last fall (2009) in the Washington, D.C. office of Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. He had the opportunity to interface with Senators John Kerry, John McCain and Olympia Snowe during his internship. Kelly will be departing July 22, 2010 for Rabat, Morocco to study French for one month. Then he will travel to Ifrane, Morocco August 23,2010 where he will be doing a one year (two semesters) study at Al Akhawayn Univeristy in Ifrane, Morocco. Here is a poem that I have had hanging in my office for many years. It was given to me as a keepsake for helping train new Financial Advisors in my firm. It occurred to me as I read over it the other day that "Rotary" too is always reaching out to others and especially to young people, so I thought I would share it with you. Dane The Bridge Builders The Bridge Builder by Will Allen Dromgoole An old man, going a lone highway, Came at the evening cold and gray, To a chasm, vast and deep and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had no fears for him; But he turned, when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. Old man, said a fellow pilgrim near, You are wasting strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again must pass this way; You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build you a bridge at the eventide? The builder lifted his old gray head; Good friend, in the path I have come, he said, There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way, This chasm that has been naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building the bridge for him.
