Anchorage Chapter Newsletter ANCHORAGE CHAPTER BY MICHELE LOGAN I trust everyone had a fantastic Alaska summer. Some of you might have gotten away from Alaska for a spell, as I did. My photo this month is me and how I look on national television when the Seattle Mariners are losing by eleven points to the Chicago Cubs at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field during a rain delay. After a brief summer hiatus, during which time the Anchorage Chapter board was quite busy, we continued our monthly luncheons on August 2, 2016 at the Golden Corral. We recognized our scholarship recipients at the August luncheon. In all, we awarded eight scholarships for a total of $11,500 as follows: Johanna Richter UAA $2,000 Joshua Medina UAA $1,500 Christine Richter UAA $1,500 Ruoning Cao UAA $1,500 Megan Bear Linfield College, OR $1,500 Alexandra Durazo Montana State $1,500 Christine Markiewicz UAA $1,000 Ashley Dorn Univ of Washington $1,000 The Anchorage Chapter commits at least 1/3 of our music show net proceeds to scholarships in the following year. We have been fortunate to have good returns on the music show and appreciate the hard and steady work of Larry Furstenberg at Wildwood Productions and Anchorage Chapter member Ray Faust, as well as all those who support the music show to make it a success. During the summer months, the Anchorage Chapter so-sponsored the 75 th Anniversary of the Alaska State Troopers pistol shoot with the Fraternal Order of Alaska State Troopers (FOAST) on July 23, 2016 at the Birchwood range. Special thanks go out to Howdi Rambur and the APD Search Team for volunteering at the event to do any and everything that needed to be done, Dan and Becky Rush at Northern Security Supply for providing a free shooting range along with Jason Wood of Targets USA, who provided steel targets for us to plunk with the free

President s Letter ~ Continued ammo. Matt Chen from Glock also came out and spent the day with us, and donated a Glock for one of the prizes. A photo collage of the shoot is included later in this newsletter. Also during July, the Anchorage Chapter sponsored the Basic Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Training Course hosted by the Anchorage Police Department at the MOA Planning and Development training room on July 26-29, 2016. We had a total of 27 students in the class. Special thanks to APD CAP Team Officer Natasha Welch for organizing the logistics for the class. At the end of August, APOA partnered with FOAST and APDEA to help staff the Public Safety booth at the Alaska State Fair. The booth, formerly the Alaska State Trooper booth, was closed last year to the chagrin of numerous fair-goers due to lack of state resources. This partnership was an effort to reopen the booth with volunteer resources. Our next Anchorage Chapter luncheon is September 6, 2016 at 11:30 AM at the Golden Corral in Anchorage. Our luncheon speaker will be Keith Hackett, the Athletic Director for the University of Alaska Anchorage. He will be speaking about the successful and exciting, yet fiscally challenging times, with the UAA Division II sports programs. Along with the new Alaska Airlines arena, the UAA sports programs are an integral part of the community. Five of our eight scholarship recipients are attending UAA. I hope to see you at the September luncheon!
