Post President s Corner Society of American Military Engineers Hampton Roads Post An Outstanding Post Since 1945 Michael R. Darrow, PE, PMP Hampton Roads Post Members, First, I want to thank Cindy Nash and the entire committee of tireless volunteers for yet another very successful industry day and small business conference. We had over 250 participants in the two day event and one of the broadest federal sector groups of representatives in recent history. I am also extremely pleased with the young member-hosted Ice Breaker and thank Melissa Waefler for her continued leadership with our ever-expanding YM Group. We are finalizing the BOD slate and you will all see a voting message later this month. We almost have a complete slate, with several new volunteers, but still are looking to fill 2 nd Vice President - Communications as well as our Community Outreach Committee Chair. As always, if you have if you have interest in serving on a committee or helping out, please let me know and we ll get you in contact with the rest of the team. We are open to helpers in any area. If interested, send me note. I know for the May meeting we will have many of our members out in Houston for the JETC, so encourage those in town to attend the monthly luncheon. June will be our annual Scholarship and Leadership transfer event. I know the committee is working diligently to finalize the scholarship selections and I truly appreciate everyone s contributions to our overall Post activities that allow us to be financially able to award over $25,000 in scholarships each year. Dewberry Selected to Perform Comprehensive Sea Level Rise Analysis in Virginia Beach Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, was selected by the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia, to perform a comprehensive sea level rise (SLR) and recurrent flooding analysis resulting in an adaptation planning study. SLR rates for Virginia Beach are in the top 10 percent of all U.S. cities. The systematic, watershed-based assessment will develop response plans to offset current and future recurrent flooding issues for susceptible areas within Virginia Beach. The study will include a comprehensive risk assessment of community assets to future flood conditions, which will be used to inform the development of an array of adaptation actions. These activities will be combined with feasibility assessments and benefit-cost ratios to help prioritize strategies, which can best be implemented to improve flood resilience and help to ensure the long-term sustainability of Virginia Beach. Dewberry Joins STARR II Joint Venture to Support FEMA in Natural Disaster Planning and Mitigation Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, has joined the Strategic Alliance for Risk Reduction (STARR II), a joint venture of Atkins and Stantec, to provide technical consulting and support services to the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The STARR II joint venture assists FEMA nationwide in working with communities to plan and respond to natural disasters. STARR II is under contract to provide FEMA with production and technical services for its Risk Map program, Hazard Mitigation Technical Assistance Program (HMTAP), and the Building Sciences Programs. The joint venture s mission is to help make communities more resilient by providing highquality risk data and expertise to support mitigation action. Services include flood hazard mapping, risk assessment, hazard mitigation planning, post-disaster mitigation support, and building sciences expertise. Dewberry has provided a broad range of consulting services to FEMA, including floodplain mapping and disaster planning and response, since 1974. The firm s team of experts includes engineers, scientists, GIS analysts, and program specialists. Dewberry is a leading, market-facing firm with a proven history of providing professional services to a wide variety of public- and private-sector clients. Recognized for combining unsurpassed commitment to client service with deep subject matter expertise, Dewberry is dedicated to solving clients most complex challenges and transforming their communities. Established in 1956, Dewberry is headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia, with more than 40 locations and 2,000+ professionals nationwide. To learn more, visit www.dewberry.com. Both the history and economy of Virginia Beach have been fundamentally shaped by its location at the intersection of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. The same coastal resources that support the communities also pose potential risks to local infrastructure, homes, and businesses. However, proactive planning will allow the City of Virginia Beach to make informed decisions to mitigate these risks.
