THE NSW TRAINING AWARDS OVERVIEW: THE NSW TRAINING AWARDS are funded and conducted annually by the NSW DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRY together with the BAY2BAY VET PROMOTIONAL COMMITTEE, INDUSTRY SPONSORS and VET STAKEHOLDERS to recognise and reward excellence and outstanding achievement in VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (VET). The NSW Training Awards are the most prestigious program of events for the Training Sector in the State. NSW s 10 Regional Training Award Events attract well over 200 guests to each of their presentation ceremonies. Ailidh Morrison The NSW Training Awards Event entertains over 500 leaders and guests from INDUSTRY GROUPS and ASSOCIATIONS, ANPs, GROUP TRAINING ORGANISATIONS; REGISTERED TRAINING ORGANISATIONS, BUSINESS, GOVERNMENT, INDUSTRY TRAINING ADVISORY BODIES, NGOs, COMMUNITY LEADERS and FAMILY and FRIENDS of those nominated as State Finalists. The function receives high media exposure and Ministerial support. ELIGIBILITY: All final year APPRENTICES, TRAINEES, VOCATIONAL STUDENTS, SCHOOL STUDENTS, INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS, TRAINING PROVIDERS, TEACHERS, EMPLOYERS and SMALL BUSINESSES are encouraged to nominate and enter. The eligibility requirements for the NSW Training Awards are designed around THE NATIONAL TRAINING AWARDS criteria to allow recognition in as many areas of VET as possible, whilst ensuring and attracting new competition each year. WHEN ARE THE REGIONAL, STATE and NATIONAL TRAINING AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED? Deneb Landero NSW Regional winners are announced in June and the NSW State winners are announced in September. Category winners then go on to compete at the AUSTRALIAN TRAINING AWARDS in November. India Wilson The Australian Training Awards are the peak national awards for the vocational education and training (VET) sector, recognising organisations, training providers and individuals for their contribution to skilling Australia. Winners from the NSW Training Awards (in aligned categories) will have the opportunity to compete with other states and territories to be named the best in Australia at the Australian Training Awards. THE BAY2BAY REGION & COMMITTEE NSW REGIONS: The NSW State finalists are chosen from regional interviews conducted across the 10 TRAINING SERVICES REGIONS in NSW. These include; Central & Northern Sydney Western Sydney Southern & South Western Sydney Central Coast Riverina New England North Coast Western NSW The Illawarra The Hunter Gillian Markham The BAY2BAY REGION has specific geographical areas that have their own training and skills needs: specifically due to location; resources; demographics; various industries and businesses. THE BAY2BAY REGION: During the financial year 2016 2017* there were 12,273 apprentices and trainees registered and in-training within the Central and Northern Sydney Region:** 7,725 Apprentices 4,689 New entrant trainees 309 Existing worker trainees 363 Aboriginal & Torres Strait learners 176 SBAT learners # *Snapshot at November 2017 ** The Central & Northern Sydney region has a population of 1,237,557 as per Bureau of Statistics # with a continual growing interest in VET in School and School Based arrangements. lillie Edgar The Bay2Bay VET Promotional Committee represents this region s profile which is very diverse community that is always taking up the challenges of emerging and changing industry. There is a strong representation of both new entrant traineeships and apprenticeships in the Central & Northern Sydney region. They all have their unique stories and success in their chosen industries and careers. The NSW TRAINING AWARDS is the platform that is used to recognise and celebrate their achievements and skills. THE COMMITTEE OBJECTIVES INCLUDE: RECOGNISING the outstanding work and achievements of local VET students, Training Providers and Organisations across the Central & Northern Sydney Bay2Bay region. PROMOTING quality VET outcomes through promotional events and the media. NOMINATING and ENCOURAGING local VET participants such as Apprentices, Trainees, School Based Students, VET in School Students, Vocational Students and Teacher/Trainers into the Regional Awards. 2017 REGIONAL CATEGORY WINNERS In 2017 the calibre of applications in the Bay2Bay Central + Northern Sydney Region was outstanding. The vast range of talent and achievement by this dynamic group of individuals who were nominated in 2017 demonstrates the strong commitment to VET in our region. 2 of our 6 regional category winners won a place via interview to represent the Central & Northern Sydney Region as Apprentice and Vocational Student finalists at the NSW State Awards in September 2017. Jordan Cahill: BAY2BAY 2017 APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR The Committee also nominated a regional finalist in the Industry Excellence - Phil Darby Memorial Award. Our Business Services trainee, CARINA ARDIZZONE won the encouragement award due to her determination to invest in her personal and professional growth, thriving on learning new information and problem solving that was readily adapted to challenges in her workplace. Our APPRENTICE finalist won his State Category and represented NSW at the National Training Awards held on the 23rd November 2017, hosted by the Australian Capital Territory in Canberra. David Collins, Executive Director Training Services NSW, and members from the Bay2Bay VET Promotional Committee attended the awards to support landscape constructor, JORDAN CAHILL, as he was announced Runner-Up Australian Apprentice of the Year. Ailidh Morrison: BAY2BAY 2017 TRAINEE OF THE YEAR REGIONAL FINALISTS: Are also utilised as ambassadors to promote their industry, vocation and skills. Many schools, vocational colleges and industries have benefited from their passion and enthusiasm to encourage people from all walks of life to embrace either new entrant training; re-training; recognition of prior or workplace skills; or the ability to turn a hobby or interest into a vocational skill. Gillian Markham: BAY2BAY 2017 VOCATIONAL STUDENT OF THE YEAR

THE TRAINING SECTOR IN NSW More than ever our flexible VET sector is responding to the demand for Australia to maintain a local and an internationally competitive workforce. During the financial year 2016 2017 there were 86,913 registered apprentices and trainees in training around NSW. The NSW Training Awards provides a platform to showcase the wide range of VET options: stakeholders and organisations. The awards reinforce the diversity of talent and proficiency in the VET sector; as well as the emerging skills and industries playing a critical role in the State s economic landscape. 2017 REGIONAL EVENT The Central & Northern Sydney Regional Training Awards were held on Wednesday evening, 14th June 2017 at The Concourse in Chatswood. The night commenced showcasing talent from the VET sector, LYSARI STRING TRIO from Brigadine College, welcoming everyone to their seats with their delightful music. The region s 34 finalists in 6 categories were then introduced and celebrated by the one and only FAST ED HALMAGYI, who was the guest MC for the night. The gathered were welcomed to the country by Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Student finalist ISAIAH DAWE, a hearty welcome to all was given by the Bay2Bay VET Promotional Committee Chairperson, MAX WILSON, followed by a keynote speech addressing the current VET sector from CHRIS DAVIS, Director, Industry and Community Relations, Training Services NSW, Skills and Economic Development. LYSARI STRING TRIO: BRIGADINE COLLEGE Congratulations were offered to all FINALISTS as Ed highlighted the achievements of each as they were presented to the stage. The finalists have all displayed excellence within their vocational course of study or chosen career. They have all gone above and beyond in their achievements, through the demonstration of high academic success, skill, design, leadership ability, commitment to VET, personal hardship and advocacy qualities which set them all apart. Ed spoke candidly with 2016 Award Ambassadors, DONNA COLOMBINI, Australian and NSW Trainer/Teacher of the Year and DANIEL KELTY, Central & Northern Sydney (Bay2Bay) Region and NSW Trainee of the Year, on their experiences over the last twelve months.
