The training programmes of the School have been developed to meet the University s mission of producing skilled and practical health professionals who will contribute towards the realization of the country s national goals. The School seeks to provide advanced and interdisciplinary training for a range of health personnel, including policy makers, medical practitioners, academicians and researchers. The School endeavours to take a leading role in the training of public health personnel locally and globally. It seeks to effectively address health problems in the region, with due consideration of the diverse social, economic, political and biological environments. The School of Public Health philosophy is embodied in the B.Sc. Environmental Health Programme which aims at producing a graduate who will approach environmental health issues with a holistic global perspective and critically analyze problems with a view to integrating theory and practice in the assessment and provision of preventive and promotive healthcare services. The B.Sc. Environmental Health Curriculum entails training students who will understand and practice Environmental Health as a profession and its contribution to the health of the individual, family and community. It encourages the student to acquire the important skills of self-directed learning, problem solving and effective communication Vision The vision of the School is to become a regional and international centre of excellence in the training, research, practice and consultancy in Public Health. Mission The Mission is to promote improvements of health of the people of Kenya. Ob j e c t i ve s 1. To provide postgraduate training, short courses and workshops in various public health disciplines with emphasis on preventive and promotive health services. 2. To enhance the capacity for research, and carry out research in priority health problems. 3. To provide service and professional advice to the government, communities and varied clients on public health issues. 4. To collaborate with the Ministry of Health, national and international institutions, organizations and international agencies for the purpose of training, research and offering services in public health. 5. Diploma Programme Admission Requirements To be admitted into the Diploma in Community Health programme, candidates must meet the following requirements: 1. A diploma or degree in a health profession or an equivalent qualification that is recognized by Moi University. 2. Three (3) years relevant working experience. 3. Competence in written and spoken English. 4. Preferably less than 45 years of age. The programme will take 12 months and will cover 40 units, which are distributed over three (3) terms. The programme is competence based, and the courses are organized in a logical, sequential order to facilitate the process of learning. The students will be required to undertake an elective course and a research project, which will require close supervision by experienced practitioners and researchers. The course will be implemented using the modular approach and innovative teaching/learning methods. Examination Regulations Common University examination regulations shall apply appropriately. Undergraduate Programme Admission Requirements To be admitted to the Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health the candidate must satisfy the following requirements: 1. They must satisfy common University regulations for admission into undergraduate programmes. 2. In addition, candidates must obtain at least the minimum cut-off points for the year as determined from one of the following subject clusters drawn from the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education structure: Mathematics or Physics Chemistry Biology English/Kiswahili 3. Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognized by Moi University Senate may also be considered. 4. Candidates with Ordinary or Higher Diploma in Environmental Health from recognized institutions and who fulfil all other University entrance requirements may be considered for admission, provided the School Board recommends and the Senate approves it. Such candidates must have a minimum of credit pass in the Ordinary Diploma programme Master of Public Health (MPH) Programme The common regulations and requirements for Masters degrees of Moi University shall apply. In addition, an applicant must satisfy the following requirements: 1) Hold a First Class or Second Class Upper Division degree of Moi University or its equivalent from any University or Institution recognized by the Moi University Senate. 2) The basic degree should be in the discipline that is relevant to the applicant s area of specialization, including Health, Biological and Social Sciences or other closely allied disciplines. 3) In addition, candidates must have at least 2 years of relevant work experience. 382

School of Public Health Diploma in Community Health This one year course was started by AMREF in 1987 in conjunction with MC Master University of Canada. The course is acredited to Moi University with the latter awarding the diploma certificate. The course is designed to enable graduates to acquire in depth knowledge, practical skills and complelencies that will be useful in facilitating communities to plan and manage their own health and development. Upon completion, the graduates are expected to provide leadership in planning and manage at district and community levels. Masters Programme The duration of the programme shall be a minimum of two (2) academic years offered both in Eldoret and in Nairobi at AMREF headquarters. The programme shall be by coursework, examination and thesis. The coursework will be covered during the first year of study while research and thesis will be undertaken in the second year of study. Undergraduate Programme The programme shall normally be for four years. Un d e r g r a d u a t e s The Environmental Health programme In t r o d u c t i o n The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Environmental Health Programme aims at producing a graduate capable of addressing environmental health issues from a global perspective and critically analyzes environmentally related health problems with a view to proposing possible solutions. The need for developing manpower in this discipline has been necessitated by the fast increasing environmental hazards resulting from ongoing processes including urbanization and industrialization that are rapidly growing due to modern technological advances. For the country to cope with these environmental health challenges it has been deemed necessary to train an Environmental Health practitioner capable of integrating theory and practice in assessing, and managing environmental issues affecting the health of the individual and the community. The Environmental Health graduate will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills through the Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach conducted in the form of overviews, tutorials, self-directed learning, practicals and fieldwork. 383

Moi University Academic Calendar 2012/2015 (ISO 9001:2008 Certified) Ob j e c t i ve s At the end of the programme, the graduate shall be able to: 1) Implement preventive and promotive health activities. 2) Plan, implement and evaluate sanitation programmes. 3) Apply measures to prevent and control communicable diseases, conduct surveillance and promote health. 4) Monitor and promote food quality. 5) Conduct environmental/sanitary inspections. 6) Monitor and promote occupational health and safety activities. 7) Plan, implement and evaluate training programmes for environmental health workers and other related health professionals and community members. 8) Conduct scientific research and publish information relevant to environmental health. 9) Formulate and develop environmental health policies. 10) Enforce laws, regulations and by-laws under relevant Acts relating to environmental health. 11) Assess the need for and take part in continuing education. Design of the Programmes All courses in B.Sc. degree in Environmental Health shall be compulsory unless the School Board recommends exemption and the Senate approves. Public health professionals therefore need to be appropriately trained to respond to the various community health problems. Through training and acquisition of relevant knowledge and skills in a multidisciplinary manner, public health professionals will understand how to identify and approach issues affecting populations, be able to develop appropriate strategies for resolving them, and monitor their implementation. The School of Public Health (SPH) provides opportunities for such training, as well as for research and public health practice. The School of Public Health offers post-graduate training programme leading to the award of the degree of Master of Public Health (MPH), in the following tracts: Epidemiology and Disease Control, Health Services Management, Human Nutrition, Disaster Management and Preparedness, Health Promotion, Hospital Administration, Occupational Health and Safety, Maternal and Child Health. Objectives The MPH programme provides a comprehensive preparation of students to address the various challenges of public health. At the end of the programme, graduates should be able to: 1) Develop and participate in the formulation of health policies. 2) Plan, manage and evaluate various public health programmes. 3) Develop research proposals, implement and manage research projects in public health. 4) Mobilize and manage resources for the promotion of public health. 5) Promote and coordinate the development of health promotion programmes at both local and national levels. Design of the Programme The Master of Public Health programme has a total of 48 to 52 units, including 18 units of the six core common courses, 17 to 22 units of required courses for the various tracts and 15 units of research and thesis. In addition, students may take a maximum of 6 units of optional courses during their second year of study. Before a candidate can graduate, he/she must have the minimum number of units required by their chosen tract.
