Jacksonville Memorial Post 88 COMMANDER S CORNER Legion Family, I hope all is well with all. Children back at school now and hopefully things getting back to a normal routine. Things are still progressing at the Post. All of the Officers are getting settled in the respective roles, and the family is starting to get more involved in the Post and activities. I think this is FANTASTIC and is exactly what we need to bring the Post around. Many of you are helping out where you can and I THANK YOU for that. We have a NEW bartenders on staff and they are Bridgett and Devon. Both are doing great! If you haven't come by, come in and say hello! We are now selling pizza at the canteen with different varieties for $7.50 each. See the bartender they will help you out. Don't forget to get your 2019 dues paid in before the 28th of November so you can get the early bird stamp on your membership card for that FREE DINNER on the 30th of November. As always, my door is always open on Tues and Thurs from 6-8 pm. The American Legion Centennial Celebration Sept 16, 1996 This Month in American Legion History Sept 16, 1919 Congress charters the American Legion September 1932 - The Sons of The American Legion is officially recognized during the 1932 National Convention in Portland, Or Sept 19-21 1942- Preamble to the Constitution of The American Legion is changed for the first and only time since it was written in 1919. The word War is changed to Wars. Sept 1, 1966 - The Legion voices great concern over the fate of prisoners of war in Vietnam. Today, the Legion urges a full accounting of all POWs and troops missing in action; and has formed a special group from among the nation's major veterans organizations to continue pressing for further resolution of this issue. Sept 24, 1994 - The American Legion announces partnership with the Smithsonian Institute s Air and Space Museum to develop an exhibit for the bomber Enola Gay, which dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Previous museum plans had drawn intense criticism from veterans, scholars and the public. Sept 16,1996 - The Legion awards a $20,000 college scholarship to each of the 10 inaugural Samsung American Legion high school scholars. Sept 3, 1997 - The Legion presents its first National Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award at the 79th National Convention in Orlando, Fla. Sept 5, 2000 - The American Legion presents the first Spirit of Service Awards to active duty service members for their off-duty volunteer activities. Sept. 12, 2001: The American Legion reactivates the Family Support Network following terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. Sept. 3, 2004: American Legion lobbying leads to more progress in elimination of the Disabled Veterans Tax with passage of PL 108-375 that eliminates the 10-year phase-in for 100 percent service- connected retirees, allowing them to immediately begin receiving both retired pay and VA disability payments. Sept 19, 2004: The American Legion launches a national program, the Blue Star Salute, where posts across the country hold public events to recognize troops, their families and local businesses on Armed Forces Day. Wow how time flies, Labor Day is already upon us and the Fall Festival will be here before you know it. In case you didn t know, we will have a bake sale the day of the festival and would appreciate any donations for this fundraiser. All Profits raised from the Fall Festival will be going to The Final Salute In case you have not heard of The Final Salute, they are an organization that helps WOMEN Veterans and their families. It is estimated that there are currently 55,000 homeless women Veterans in the United States on any given day. This is the mission we are working toward with this event. Please stop by the post, there is more information available or just ask me about it. On the 1 st & 3 rd Wednesday of the month. The Auxiliary will be selling food. Each of the listed Wednesday evenings we will be selling Fresh Cut French Fries and Fried Cheese Sticks for only $3. We will also have a different item each week to make a full meal if you choose. We look forward to seeing you there. This is a great night to come out if you are into Live Music! Especially since the Musician s, are Post Members!! The Fall Festival and Open House will be Saturday, October 20 th from 11 am 3 pm. It will be here before we know it. We are still looking for people willing to volunteer. Please pass the word. ALR Chapter 88 My Friends, I'd like to apologize for not getting the newsletter out in time for last month s printing. I am very excited and hope to add a few more rides so we can be an entity that raises funds and has fun. I am hoping to get all of the ALR members involved and help contribute to all of our activities. We would like to focus on support within the post as well as take pride in membership. We all need to work together and grow our membership. We are hoping to build strong relations with The Legionnaires, the Auxiliary, and the SAL, and support their charities as well as them supporting ours. Our Christmas party is going to be December 8 th, from 7:00 to 11:00 PM with music by Backtracks Band. Our big fundraiser for the Sulzbacher Center is the Fun Run which will be April 20 th, 2019. Don t forget to join us at Los Loros Mexican restaurant for Motors & Margaritas on September 18th. The owner, Sebastian, donates 20% of your bill to help the homeless veterans at The Sulzbacher Center. We will be having spaghetti with marinara sauce and meatballs, garlic bread, salad, and dessert for the ALR dinner on Friday September 7th. The cost will be $8.00. The ALR breakfast will be September 8th, and don t forget we have added French toast to the menu. Our next ALR meeting is Monday September 10th at 7:00 PM. Please come out to the meetings and get involved. Many hands make the load lighter. Let s support the ALR and the entire Post 88 family. HELP WANTED The Post has an immediate opening for a Canteen Manager. This is a very important part of the Post. Their responsibilities include but are not limited to: Schedule the Bartenders and ensuring the bar is staffed when open Manage bar staff and maintaining a training program for all new hires to ensure they and ALL bar staff are trained and clearly understand expectations Ensure maintenance and cleanliness of canteen area at all times Perform Inventory control and ordering Financial management of the canteen as well as reconciliation Attend Bar Committee meetings and when asked, attend the Executive Committee Meetings Other responsibilities as directed by the Commander and/or the Bar Committee You do NOT have to be a bartender to apply for this role. If you or anyone you know of would like to apply for this role please pick up and application at the Post. We WILL be staffing this position in the next few weeks so if you are interested you need to apply soon. Pay will be negotiated at the time of hire. Save the Dates..
